Pioneering Coed
Colgrove Boasts Female Alumna;Mabel Dart Attended in 1878-82
HAMILTON—Only one womanhas ever been made a memberof the Colgate University Alumni Corp. Her name was MabelDart, and she was student aColgate from 1878 to 1882.In those days, the name of theschool was Madison UniversityMabel Dart was the daughterof a Hamilton farmer and or-chard man who also ran thecollege boarding hall, and Ma-bel was a problem. At the ageof 14, she was prepared forcollege, but she was still tooyoung to be admited to a nornalschool for young ladiesHer parents were not in a positionto afford private tutorsindefinitely—what was to bedone with her?Ebenezer Dodge, then presi-lent of Madison and Trusteehe situation. They agreed thatMabel should have an opporunityto attend classes at thecollege, provided she couldpass the necessary qualifyingexaminations. Passed ExaminationsRecalling her Colgate days39 years later, Mabel DartColegrove wrote: "I understoodthat one of the professors wasvery confident that I would notpass his examination. This Idid in December 1877 after along and searching test. Theother examinations followed atintervals to suit the convenienceof the professors. I do notremeber having received anyformal notice of admission; justwas told by the individual pro-fessors that my entrance examinationswere satisfactory." Shebegan attending classes in 1878President Dodge and TrusteeColgate did not promise MissDart that the university wouldaward her a degree. Indeed, ac-cording to her later recollec-tions, "that was a questionthey didn not squarely face. Itwould require trustee action andthe establishment of a definitepolicy. Some members of theBoard might not be ready forthat. But I was assured that asatisfactory certificate of workaccomplished would be givenme if difficulties developedabout the degree." Finished in 1882In 1882, Mabel Dart had com-pleted her work at the collegeand the question of the degreefinally had to be faced. Pre-sumably, in President Dodge'sjudgment, the members of theJoard were still not "ready toestablish a coeducational prece-dent."For he did not ask thatthe degree be awarded by Madi-son University. Instead, he ad-advised Mabel and her parentsthat she should take her car-tificate and herself to Pough-keepsie and enroll for one se-mester at Vassar College.A Vassar degree, it was ex-plained, would be less "em-barrassing" to a young ladythan one from a men's collegeAnd in those days, as MabelDart Colegrove observed, "Girlsfollowed the advice.of their elders." Miss Dart returned fromPoughkeepsie with a Vassar de-gree. "When I came back," she said, "President Dodge gave me a strong letter (of recom-mendation) covering the yearsspent in Madison University andexpressing his confidence inmy success as a teacher." Married ClassmateFrederick Welton Colegrovehad been a fellow classmateof Miss Dart during her fouryears as a student at MadisonUniversity. She marriedhim in 1884, after having taughtfor two years at the Norwich,N.Y. Academy. She continued toteach at the Marion, N.Y.Col-legiate Institue where her hus-band was principal from 1884to 1889.The Colegroves spent a yearin Germany in 1889, then reurnedto Hamilton, where Colegrovewas a professor at their common alma mater until 1892He went on to become presi-laler joined the faculty of theUniversity of Washington. Hedied in 1915.In the meantime, Mrs. Cole-grove had earned a B.L.S. degreefrom the New York StateLibrary School. When her husband died, she had already begunwork as a librarian ,at the Newark, N.J. Free Public Library. She continued there inthat capacity until 1944. Excellent Background"The fixed curriculumMadison University," Mrs.Colegrove wrote in 1946, "gaveme an excellent preparationfor the emergencies that arisein both teaching and librarywork. Otherwise I would nothave been retained on the staffof the Newark Library untilwell past my 80th birthday."Colgate's first coed mighthave been forgotten as such afterher death in 1954, had it notbeen for the earlier efforts ofEmerson Reck, then the col-lege's director of public rela-tions. In 1946 Reck began towonder whether the wives ofreturning war veteran's whowere then being allowed to atendclasses at Colgate withtheir student, husbands were, infact the "first coeds." He discovered they were not, and satisfied himseld that Mrs. Colegrove was.Reck and Mrs. Colegrove exchangeda number of letters in 1946 and1947. In Jun of 1947, the lateCarl Miller, then alumni secretaryof Colgate, wrote Mrs. Colegrove that she had been given fullmembership in the Alumni Corp.He forwarded to her the resolutionof greetings that had been passedby her "Fellow alumni" at the AllAlumni Luncheon a week earlier. The issue of coeducation, whichPresident Dodge's own convictionsmight well have led him to pursueif he had lived longer, went into abayance at Colgate for many years after Mabel Dart's matricalation. Later presidents were either didinclined to pursueto possibility or pessimistic asto whether it could ever be implemented.Today coeducation is once again asubject of discussion-- and feeling. With few exceptions, students are in favor of it.But "all those happily marriedalumi" as one student bitterlydescribed then, are not.
