BULL KILLS RANCHER
GILLETTE, Wyo., Nov. 10--S. A.
Colegrove an aged rancher at Cody
was found dead in a pasture on his
ranch with a four-year-old Durham
bull of enormous size keeping guard
over the body. No one say the battle
between the man and beast but signs
pointed to a long and hard struggle
for his life by Colegrove. A club,
evidently broken over the head of
the beast, was found in his hands and
the man had also tried to defend
himself with his pocket knife. The
knife, with the blade broken off was

CONFESSION OF A MURDER
------------
FARM HAND'ADMITS SLAYING
MAN WITH HAMMER.
------------
Former Nebraskan Declares He
Struck Owen Brown in Self-
Defense and Explains
Burning of Body.
WASHINGTON, Kas., Jan. 4.
Olen Ireland, of Mount Clare, Neb.,
known here as "Jack McMahon,"
has confessed to authorities here
that he delivered the hammer
blows that killed Owen Brown, his
employer, farmer whose charred
body was found in his partly burn-
ed auto on a road near here last
Wednesday morning. The confes-
sion is in writing and was secured
late Saturday after Ireland is al-
leged to have feigned insanity for
four days and previously declaring
that Brown's death was caused
from an auto accident.
A Washinton attorney retained
by the confessed slayer, is prepar-
ing to defend on the present plea
of the prisoner that he struck in
self defense. The insanity plea is
not mentioned in the confession.
Browns's badly charred body was
found in his overturned and partly
burned car about nine miles from
this city early Wednesday after Ire-
land, feigning injury to himself,
claimed he had crawled more than
a half mile to the home of a farmer
to secure aid.
The confession sets forth that
Ireland, is twenty-eight years old,
was born at Cortland, Neb., in 1896,
where he lived ten years with his
parents, and moved to Mount Clare
in 1906, where he went to school.
His parents are dead and are both
buried at Mount Clare.
The confession also states that
there was a woman in the case at
Beloit, and on the way home
trouble arose over this fact, which
developed into a lively quarrel. It
is admitted that liquor was secur-
ed. The storekeeper at Strawberry,
an inland village, southwest of
Morrowville, where the men stop-
ped for gas on the way home,
states that the men were not drunk
when at his store. There was no
liquor, or evidence of any found in
the wrecked car.
Preliminary hearing for Ireland
has now been set for Friday, Jan-
uary 9, according to county author-
ities, and he is being held in the
Washington jail.
Funeral services were held for
the murdered farmer Sunday morn-
ing at Washington, and the body
was transported overland to Odell,
where a service was held at the
home of James Colgrove., retired
farmer, and father of the widow
of Brown. The funeral cortege then
proceeded to the Wymore ceme-
tery.

Is it not amazing that even her obituary does not give even her given name,
let alone her maiden name. From Terry's research, we know she was the
daughter of a Colegrove, by another obituary that also referred to her simply as
Mrs. so and so.
