Terry,
Again, back in 2001 and 2002, I researched the original vital records of the
Towns of Westerly and Exeter, and found the records you cite.
With regard to the couple James & Anna, the birth records for their children
Susannah, Dorcas, Sarah, and Russell are all in the EXETER records (Exeter
Vital Records, Book 2, p.11a). The Exeter records interestingly state that
Russell was "born of the body of Anna" -- does that mean that she died during
his delivery? A correspondant, Max Colegrove, has five more children for this
couple, but I found no birth records for them. Did he remarry and move out
of town?
With regard to the couple John (this is the son of the immigrant Francis) &
Susannah, again these are EXETER records (Exeter Vital Records, Book 1,
p.204). Note that Sarah, Susannah & James would have been born while Exeter was
still part of South Kingstown. James was born after it was separated as
Exeter. Obviously, the births were recorded after the fact, which was typical of
many of the records I found in southwest RI -- the births of all children
were frequently entered in the records at one time. I did not find any records
for these births in the original South Kingstown vital records. The 1894
genealogy claims another child, William, for this couple though I found no
record for him.
With regard to Francis (this is the namesake son of the immigrant --
"Francis, Jnr.") & Hannah, the children cited are all found in the WESTERLY records
(Westerly Vital Records, Vol. 2 ~ Town Meeting Records, Births, Marriages &
Deaths, Indenture, Book No. 2, 1706-1746). Anna is actually spelled Anne.
Sarah is also listed, but not Hannah. I confirmed Hannah as a daughter,
however, with the Stonington Land Records, Vol. 11, pp. 35-36, where Amos & Hannah
Crandall of Stonington (CT) are cited as heirs of Francis Colegrove late of
Stonington. I have wondered if Anne and Hannah are not the same person,
though I have separate husbands for both -- if they are different people, they
both settled in Stonington. Published genealogies have additional children
for this couple, though I have found original records for only three of them
-- Amie, Jeremiah, and Samuel.
Again, I never saw the spelling "Coldgrove" in the original records.

In 2002, I researched the original records at Richmond Town Hall, and came
across the records you cite. The birth records are found on page 165 of the
Richmond Land Evidence, combined Vols. 1 & 2. I transcribed everything exactly
as you have it for the birth records, with one exception. I transcribed
"Beasmel" instead of "Brownell". My notes state that William Colegrove's 1894
genealogy spelled the name as "Browning". For the reason you state,
"Brownell" makes sense.
Also, I transcribed the last name as spelled "Colegrove" from the original
Richmond birth records, noting that Oliver's last name was instead spelled
"Colgrove" on his Richmond marriage record with Esther Tefft. Son Amos' deed
spells both his and his father's name as Colgrove. Son Eli's Richmond ear mark
record (Richmond ear mark records were as common as land transfer records)
has his and his father's name as "Colegrove". I think "Coldgrove" was a
mis-transcription, though I have seen that spelling elsewhere. As I have noted in
the past in this list, the immigrant Francis had his name spelled "Colgrove"
on his land transactions, though that was the spelling of the town clerk --
the name was always along side Francis' mark "X" -- he could not write. His
son Francis, however, could and he always used the "e". Since Francis was
illiterate, there is no correct spelling in America.
The town hall deeds I found transferring the estate of Oliver to his
children begin with the date 2 February 1802 (pages 230, 231, & 232 of Richmond Land
Evidence, Vol. 5). I may have missed the 1801 deed you cite.
