Hi Bob. Yes, I too was quite surprised and proud. I have heard so much
abt. this Memorial and never dreamed
one of "ours" was on it. If the name means anything I feel he was part of
the Eli Tribe. I was hopeing to hear
something from dec's of that tribe but as of now, nothing!! I intend to go
see it for myself. Thanks, Garry

While watching the History Channel last night they flashed the Memorial on the USS Arizona. It has a listing of all the
men that died on it. (1177) While they were scanning I thought I saw the Colegrove name?? I checked tonight and
found that indeed there was a Colegrove listed. S2C Willett S. Colegrove The date was of course Dec. 7, 1941 at
Pearl Harbor. The only use of the name Willett S. (Stillman?) is in the tribe of Eli. Anybody know?

Casandra,
It looks like we are related - not through the Colegroves, but through the
Taylors. The Susannah Taylor who married Mager Colegrove was the daughter
of Thomas Taylor and Lydia Capwell of RI, MA and NY. A handful of us Taylor
descendants have collaborated and have been working on the Thomas Taylor
(and any other Taylors we have found in or around Providence, RI, and
Edmeston, NY) for several months.
In our searches, we feel pretty strongly that Welthian Taylor who married
Stephen Colegrove is also closely related to Susannah Taylor, but we have
not yet proved that theory.
Let me know if you would like a lowdown on the Taylor story.
And as for you, Jim - thanks for the great postings to the Colegrove list!

I believe my line may be Francis > Eliezer > Oliver > Joseph > Almena + James
Gibbs > James C. > Edgar W. > Howard B. > Julian H. > James H. Gibbs (me). I
have not proven however that my Joseph is the same Joseph who according to
the 1894 book was of the above line. There are problems with the book, so I
am trying to corroborate my line with primary records.
As to your line, I have some questions regarding John's supposed son John.
This younger John was born to John and Susannah Colegrove per Exeter Vital
Records Book 1, p. 204, on 2(1?) January 1743. Other correspondents have
told me that the younger John's son Asa was born on 8 April 1757, when John
would have been just 14 years old. I have found no wife ever mentioned for
this John, so wonder whether Asa might instead be the youngest child of the
older John -- the dates still work in this scenario. I found this to be
almost certainly in my possible line, that is, that Francis' son Eli was the
same person as Eli's supposed son Eleazer. I am suggesting that your line
may also have an improper extra generation.
Does anyone have different information that makes the line have two Johns?
For instance, Asa had children born as late as 1823, which would seem to make
the 1757 birth date for Asa too early. I would think Asa would not have been
born before 1768, which in turn could easily make him the son of a John son
of a John...

I found all three of the above records in Book 1, p. 158, of the original
Exeter Vital Records.
Susannah's actual marriage record is more specific, citing "Susannah Barber
daughter of Thomas both of Exeter".
Benjamin and Sarah's marriage record is also more specific, citing the
marriage of "Benjamin Colegrove of Coventry, son of Stephen & Sarah Colegrove
of Exeter, & Sarah Colegrove of Exeter, daughter of Eleazer Colegrove
Deceased". Note that the online transcription you referred to cites only
"Colegrove, Benjamin of Coventry, son of Stephen, and Sarah Colegrove m.
21-Oct-1759", so that online transcription seems to have been edited. The
transcription I cite is as I copied directly from the original record, and
clearly makes Benjamin the son of Stephen and Sarah Colegrove, and the
younger Sarah the daughter of Eleazer Colegrove. Perhaps either the Town
Clerk or I made an error, writing "Sarah Colegrove of Exeter" twice by
mistake; if so, then the record would read "Benjamin Colegrove of Coventry,
son of Stephen, & Sarah Colegrove of Exeter, daughter of Eleazer Colegrove
Deceased" -- that would agree with what has generally been published. Let me
double check the town record on this, and my own transcription of that
record.
Also, the Eleazer cited above as father of Sarah is, if my theory is correct
(as described in earlier emails to the list), one and the same as the
immigrant Francis' son Eli. Eleazer is thus, I believe, not the son of Eli
as is usually published. The name is usually spelled Eliezer in various town
records.

Anita --
My research does not extend past the towns in my backyard here in Mystic, CT,
but I can offer some insights on the first couple generations of your line.
Stephen, son of the immigrant Francis, died on 14 June 1787 -- I have seen
that date on his tombstone in the Riverside Cemetery in the village of Oneco
in the Town of Sterling, CT. It is possible that the date reads 1781, 1784,
1787, or 1789, but I though it read 1787. The June 14 part was clear.
Stephen most likely was then living on the homestead lands he had bought some
time earlier just a half mile east of this cemetery, which while in RI
bordered on the CT state line. This would make Stephen "of" Coventry, RI,
when he died. His tombstone states that he died "in the 93d year of his
age", which actually means he was 92 years old the way we think of it now.
That means that if the correct death year is 1787 that Stephen was born
between 15 June 1694 and 14 June 1695. I have found Stephen's father
Francis' name as a witness to a 1693 deed filed in Westerly, but that does
not mean that he yet lived there. Francis was living in Westerly at least by
1700 when he became a Freeman there -- again, I have seen the original
records. Francis' adult baptism of 1698 was recorded at the Newport
Sabbatarian Church, but all of the Westerly Sabbatarians would have had their
church records recorded in Newport up to 1708 when the Westerly Sabbatarian
Church was founded. But I have found nothing that puts Francis in Warwick at
the time of Stephen's birth. So I do not think we can say that Stephen was
born in Warwick. My guess is that he was born in Newport, Jamestown,
"Kingstowne", or Westerly.
I have confirmed that Stephen was married to a "Welthon", as her name is
spelled on several land records -- the earliest of these deeds being dated 22
March 1724/25 in North Kingstown. So Welthian is likely the mother of
Stephen's younger children. However, I found in the Exeter Town Hall a
record that has Stephen and Sarah Colgrove as mother of Benjamin born in
1729. That would mean that Welthian was dead by 1729, and that several of
Benjamin's children were not born by Welthian as is usually claimed. The
only disclaimer I make here is that the Exeter record has Benjamin born in
1729 despite the fact that Exeter had not yet been separated as a town from
North Kingstown, so this record was recorded after the fact, which was not
uncommon. I can confirm Stephen's later marriage to a Phebe by land
transactions dated between 1758-1759, and the fact that "Mrs. Phebe Colgrove
- wife of Stephen Colegrove" is buried alongside her husband. I have not
confirmed the 1740 marriage date usually cited for Phebe & Stephen -- does
anyone know where that marriage took place? So I would be careful in making
claims as to whom was the mother of any of Stephen's children.
Stephen's son William did marry a woman named Anne, but I have a problem with
her being the mother of William's children as is usually cited, This is
because a Warwick deed dated in 28 March 1772 refers to William's wife as
"Anne Colgrove the new wife of me". William's usually cited marriage date to
Anne Waterman is 1756, but that does not correspond to her being a "new" wife
in 1772. So I suspect we have an unknown earlier wife William who was
instead the mother of his children. Or did William just happened to marry
two women by the name Anne?
I do show Asaph as marrying Polly Blackmore/Blackmer, but that information
comes from Ancestral File, and does not represent a primary source research
on my part. Similarly, I have Asaph's daughter Polly married as you do to
both David Newkirk and Aaron Miller, again based only on unsubstantiated
Ancestral File sources.
