Hi Mike,
You're a long way from home. Please keep us posted on your search into
the origins of the Colegrove name. Sounds interesting! I'm still
searching for my Roxy/Roxie/Rosie? Hastings
Connie>daughter of: Francis, Jeremiah, Jeremiah Jr., John Thomas m Roxey
Ann Hastings, Elizabeth (greatgrandmother)
Mike,
I am one of the few Colegroves living in Oxford! My farther (Michael) lived
in the Banbury Road (now living just North of Oxford). I might be able to
answer some of your questions. If you are coming over to England in
September - let's meet up.!
Regards
Timon Colegrove(b1961), son of Michael(b1924), son of Edward(b1897), son of
Joseph (b1865), son of Joseph(b1834), son of William
I'm married with 4 children (Joseph, Christian, Sascha and Polly)
Wife-Sally.
Cousins!
I am Michael Lyle Colegrove (Tribe of Stephen). b. July 31, 1941.
Father; Marshall Rolland, Mother; Birdie Alice (Sage)
(Just to identify myself and establish my credentials.)
I am now living (and working on a US gov't contract) in Tbilisi,
Georgia-the former soviet republic. I will be here for 3 years.
I wish to "reconnect" and continue my genealogy research. Some of
you I know from my previous contacts, and from what Terry says,
there are a whole lot of you doing the same thing.
It seems to me that we have good records on the USA branches, just a
matter of them all getting stuck onto the trunk in the right place.
My particular interest is to push back to the UK and sorting out the
1000 or so records in the LDS files...most of which are totally
unconnected. LDS records show 10 Colegrove listings from the mid to
late 1500s in what is now Oxfordshire. By plotting the dates with
locations on a map, there is a preponderance of "Colegrove" citations
along the modern A44 highway from Oxford to Chipping North and along
the Oxford-Banbury Road. However, a proposal was made that the name
Colegrove MAY have evolved from a village named "Chalgrove" a few
miles SE of Oxford...or just east of Abingdon.
Has anyone ever pursued this? If true then the cherished dream of the
groves along the river Cole may be wrong. (Besides which there are
no Colegroves (under any spelling) listed along the Cole river
anyway!! Well two maybe, one in 'Stanford in the Vale', and one in
'Kelmscot'. But thin stuff to build a legend on.
Another problem is there are precious few Colegroves or Colgroves or
Calgroves in England. One listing shows only 70 or so households.
Those that are there haven't had much more information than the
American cousins through the LDS.
I would like to spend 2 weeks in late September checking things out.
Do we have any good leads/contacts in England?
Any info, contacts, or theories, would be appreciated.
Mike
I'm looking for information about the ancestors of Eliza Colegrove, she was born 28 June 1807 in Swerford, Oxford, England. She married William Watson. All I have on her parents is her father's name - Henry Colegrove and his wife's name Ann.
Any information would be great, thanks
Robyn

page has been updated. If you find any typos, let me know. :)
