Charles was born about 1761. He married Elizabeth Stoneman in 1795 in
Grayson County, VA and died there about 1844. I have lots of
descendants, but have never been able to find his ancestors. His
marriage bond reads: Bond 1795-6 Dated 4/16/1795 Principal Charles
Cole Surety: Richard Cole For consent of Charles Cole to marry
Elizabeth Stoneman, dau of James. Consent dated 4-13-1795, given by
James Stoneman, Witnessed by Mathew Cole. Richard may be his father
and Mathew his brother, but I don't know, and I can't find that info
anywhere. Two of Charles's children listed in a Census that Charles
came from MD.
I have always thought maybe he was related to the Mass Coles, and just
recently discovered that he is listed in the relationship to Hugh Cole
as Father of brother-in-law of the mother-in-lw of the 5th great grand
daughter of Hugh. Needless to say I haven't been able to track that one
down, but the relationship is not through the Coles. Some of the Mass
Coles settled in Washington County, so that is why I thought these Coles
were related.
John Linder Cole, b 1848 d 1919, Charles' Great grandson, made a trip to
Maryland, per family story. I thought that back then to travel that far
it was probably to see relatives, but don't know that either.

I am trying to locate anyone who has Cole (Colee, Cola) connections that
were in Rutherford Co., TN. around the 1830-40's. My
great-great-grandmother, Ellen C.(Eleaner) Cole married Mathias Jacobs
in that county in 1834. I have never been able to find anyone who may
be related to her. I would appreciate any information. Thank you, Sue

Couldn't resist sharing my Cole brick wall when I saw Baltimore Co. MD
Ruth Cole --- have found nothing with paper proof for her except her
marriage to Nathan Hawkins 14 Feb 1722 Baltimore Co. MD
They had 7 children all born in Baltimore Co. One being Rebecca Hawkins
mother of David Crockett
We know that Nathan died in Sullivan Co. TN 1781 by his will. Wife Ruth
is listed but no record of when she died or where they might be buried.

James & Sarah Cole were my 7th G-grandparents. Their son ,John Cole, was
born 16 May1719, Lunenburg & died there in 1808
John married twice, first to my 6th G-grandmother Ann Livingston and
second to Mary August Whitlock, daughter of Josiah Whitlock.
John & Ann's son John ( my 5th GG) was born 1744, possibly Morristown,
Morris Co. New Jersey( I question this, but haven't found a source to prove
or disprove it) . John died 9 July 1817 in Gorham, Ontario Co. New York
He & wife Hannah ( 30 March 1747- 13 Dec.1816) are listed on the 1790 &1800
Fed. census as living in Windsor, Berkshire Co. Massachusetts. They moved
to Gorham after 1810. Both are buried at Baldwin Corners Cemetery,
Rushville, Ontario Co.New York
Any information concerning these individuals would be gratefully
appreciated.
Many Thanks from Salem, Oregon

This is a valid link. I just clicked on it from your email and it went
right to the site.
You can also use this one
https://familysearch.org/ This takes you to the front page of the site
and then you click on Search to get to the search page. Though by doing
this I noticed that the link is https://familysearch.org/search
(without the /hr). The link below is the link I use all the time
though. Maybe it is because I have a Mac, but I copied the link from
the search page I was on. Also if you copy and paste it, the period
will keep it from getting the Oops page. If you copy it, don't include
the . at the end of the url.

To all Cole researchers, I would recommend using
https://familysearch.org/hr/search. It is free and even has some of the
documents. Some of the documents are linked to Ancestry, but since I
can't afford Ancestry, I just copy and paste the Family Search record.
After you fill in all the info that you have into the search box and
click on Search, you will get a list of people. In the first column
there is an arrow. Click on the arrow and you will see whatever there is
to see that was transcribed from the document. It will also contain the
source, which is nice because when you copy and paste into your
genealogy program, the source will be right there where it is needed.
The last column (Image) will have a picture of a camera if there is an
image. If there is a free image you will have to sign into the Family
Search site, but it is free. As I said above, sometimes the image is at
Ancestry, so if you don't have an Ancestry account you don't get to view
it. I use this site all the time, since it is one of the few sites that
are free. More records are getting transcribed every day. I have
transcribed quite a few myself. If you would be interested in doing
that, click on Indexing at the top of the page.
I have quite a lot of info on a lot of Coles. In fact I have just
discovered that I may be related to the Mass. Coles. I just can't find
the connection. I was looking up something for someone on this list -
Harvey Cole - and I noticed that it gave a relationship to me. Then I
checked our Freelove Cole and it had a relationship also. I just can't
figure out how to find the connection. My direct line is from Charles
Cole b 1761 married Elizabeth Stoneman. I just changed him to the home
person and Harvey is the 2nd cousin 1x removed of the husband of the
niece of daughter-in-law of Charles. So it is not a direct connection,
but it is a connection somewhere. I guess I should look up at the
relationship box more often.
I have included some Maryland Coles also, just in case I can connect
with them. One of Charles' sons listed his father was from MD in one of
the census. Just remember this is from the internet and I have not
proven anything but my immediate line of Coles. Check out my site below.

Thanks everyone for all the information. I don’t think the VA and NC areas fit my Cole line since it ended up with my mother on Long Island through her father in CT and her grandfather and G grandfather in NY state. I did find a Lorenzo D. Cole from St. Lawrence County, NY, about the right age, but the census in 1850 does not list family members, so I don’t even have his wife’s name. His son Edson L. Cole married Sarah A. ______. I have no maiden name.

I also have two lines of Coles in Virginia, neither related to the present conversation.
Francis Cole, b. abt 1750, Chesterfield Co. VA; d 17 Aug 1834, Dinwiddie Co. VA; wife Martha Cliborn; dau Mary Elizabeth Cole, b. abt 1794, VA; d. Jan 1852, Bates Co. MO; m. Robert Belcher, Sr., 1 Dec 1810, Amelia Co. VA.
Also: Abraham Cole, b. ca 1642; d. ?; m. Rebecca ?.
dau, Elizabeth Cole, b. ?; d?; m. William Elston, 20 Aug 1862, Staten Island, New York.
These two men are not related, as far as I know.

You are right Jo, haven't found a connection to the Dutch Coles. In my
files I do have a lot of info on the New England Coles, since I have
been trying for years to connect our Coles to them.
There is a Harvey Cole b 1808 at my website (1st url in signature). Have
no info on him except his wife was Susan Hume. He died in Cincinnati,
Ohio. FTM says he is a 2nd cousin 1x removed of wife of 1st cousin 3x
removed to me. There must be an error somewhere be in my listing. I
have never seen a connection before to the Mass. Coles.
I have to figure out how to find how to figure out who these cousins
are. This first cousin thing confuses me. I always thought 1st cousin
was your aunt's child and your 1st cousin's child was your 2nd cousin,
etc. Now it is 1x removed for your 1st cousin's child.
Does anyone know a way to find this out.
This Harvey Cole was s/o Eleazer Cole III and Hannah Rouse. His
grandparents were Eleazer Cole and Eunice Cole. Eunice was the daughter
of Isreal Cole III and Remember Burgess. Now I have to find out about
this connection somehow. I have always thought we were part of the Mass
Coles.

Coles ARE hard to track down. I have been searching to find the right Lorenzo D. Cole ever since you could use the Internet to do so. He would be my GG grandfather, so you can see I haven’t gotten very far with the Coles. I have been through MA, CT, and ME, and now I think he was born in New York, but the census I found does not list the children (1850) so I don’t know if his son, Edson L., was born there, too. I have two Cole lines who went to Washington County VA from New England.
1)Joseph Cole and Freelove Mason (They descend from James Cole and Mary
Tibbes of Massachusetts). Both are buried in the Saint Clair Bottom
Primitive Baptist Cemetery, Chilhowie, Smyth County, Virginia, USA (Smyth
County was formed from Washington County. I am related through their son
Sampson Cole (1755-1833) who married Keziah Cole which is where my second
Cole line comes in. She was the daughter of Israel Cole III and Remember
Burgess. Israel descends from Daniel Cole and Ruth Collier, also of
Massachusetts but originally born in England. It has been proven that James
Cole and Daniel Cole were not related as was originally thought for some
time.
I have my tree on Ancestry if you are a member.

MarySaban, will you please send me what you have of the Coles who went
to Washington County, VA. I'm eager to see if any of the given names
match up with any of ours. I've found first names were often repeated
some generations later. In addition, Washington County is not far from
Grayson.
Cole (meaning cabbage or slaw) is an English version of the original
German, which was Kohl (cabbage) & would likely be similar to the
German, as is the language. I found some entries under the misspelling
of Coal. I don't rely on what I see on the web for these observations.
Thanks for your help.
