The Grayson County, VA, I daresay, have not heard of this branch of the
Dutch Coles. Please correct me if I'm wrong, Barb Norvell.

Hoping to help or get help with this Cole line. I have more info -
am trying to find Harvey's parents. Thanks in advance :)

HARVEY COLE AND SIBLINGS:
HARVEY COLE (1791-1863) M. NANCY TAYLOR / FIRST CHILD BORN 1810 /
HARVEY OWNED LAND IN CAIRO BY 1812. I HAVE LOTS OF INFO ON THEIR
CHILDREN ETC. INTERESTING STORY HERE - NANCY IS THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF
JAMES BARKER, AN ATTORNEY, FROM ENGLAND WHO CAME TO THE 'NEW WORLD' IN
1765 WITH 23 TENANT FAMILIES AND SETTLED IN WOODSTOCK (NOT THE
WOODSTOCK) BUT NEAR THE PRESENT TOWN OF CAIRO. JAMES BARKER OWNED OVER
6000 ACRES IN THE BARKER PATENT.
ELISHA S. WAS OLDER THAN HARVEY (I
THINK - NO PROOF - HIS WIFE ROSANNA LINSLEY WAS BORN JAN.1788). KNOWN
CHILDREN (INFO FROM ELISHA SR. WILL SEPT. 1841) SON - IRA OF SILVER
CREEK, CHATAQUA CO., NY, SON - ELIAS B.1810+/- LIVED WITH WIFE BETSEY
AND SEVERAL CHILDREN IN CAIRO 1855 CENSUS, SON - ELISHA S. DIED (1839 AT
27Y) BEFORE HIS FATHER, AND IS BURIED IN THE CAIRO CEM., SON - NATHAN
WILLIAM OF INDIANA, DAU - JULIA LOUNSBURY WIFE OF JOSHUA OF RONDOUT, DAU
- AMANDA HOUGHTALING WIFE OF DAVID (M.13 NOV 1842) OF RONDOUT.
RUSSEL(L) (1792-1852) M. ELIZABETH GRIDLEY(1794-1861) LIVED IN
MIDDLEBURGH,SCHOHARIE CO.- ALL CHILDREN BORN IN SCH CO. BUT FAMILY WAS
BACK IN CAIRO, GRE CO. AT LEAST BY 1850 (CENSUS RECORD). RUSSELL AND
ELIZABETH ARE BURIED IN TAYLOR-COLE CEM. CAIRO, NY.
CHARLES H.
(1803-1882) M. THANKFUL MERCHANT (1805-1875) WERE IN SAND LAKE,
RENSSELEAR CO., NY IN 1865. BOTH BURIED THERE.
AMANDA (NO DATES) M. A
MR. SMITH - NO INFO
RACHEL M. TOBIAS BRITT (BRETT) 3 JAN.1816 -
NEWSPAPER ANNOUNCEMENT SAYS RACHEL WAS OF SAUGERTIES, ULSTER CO., NY.
TOBIAS WAS BORN 1789
NOTE: ADDED OCT. 2009 … SOMEWHERE I READ
SOMETHING ABOUT RACHEL COLE AND TOBIAS BRITT AND THOUGHT THIS WAS NOT
OUR RACHEL. NO PROOF YET ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.
Hi Jo,
n 1850 he is still in Grayson but living with Jacob and Celie Haga with
his children. He is listed as a wagon maker there. He was in TN and
listed as a cooper in the 1860 census for Johnson County, TN living with
Douglas and Nancy Dinkins. I took it to mean that maybe by then wagon
wheels had a coop around them. So it could mean that. In 1870 he is
back in Grayson with Jackson and Sarah Parks. All his kids out on his
own by then. Since Elizabeth died soon after John Linder, I would
assume it was due to complications from his birth.

My COLE m. into my TWISS family in Ireland. If anyone has any info. on
this branch, please, contact.
Thank you.
Cousin Shannah TWISS
overthepond648(a)gmail.com
Canada
COLE people please help if you can. My GG GRANDFATHER CHARLES COLE
(1800-1888) immigrated to New Brunswick, Canada about 1820. The only
info I have is that he was born in IRELAND. 1825 or so moved to BOSTON
MASS., Married Eleanor Driscoll in 1829. They had 4 sons and one
daughter then moved to MAIDSTONE, ONTARIO and settled on 200 acres in
MAIDSTONE, Ontario.
The only daughter married into the LYONS family, also of Maidstone.
Maidstone appears to be a magnet for a variety of IRIS immigrants, PRE
THE FAMINE and during the famine. I have checked EVERY possible
connection and have never come close to finding CHARLES COLE'S birthplace...
Please give me some ideas as my genealogy days are diminishing with age.
I too have Coles from throughout New England. Anybody with these lines
willing to share ?

the Cole clan seems to be impossible to find. I am the GGGranddaughter
of a William Cole born in Ireland in 1829. Family emigrated to England
during Irish famine. He came to the US about 1853, married a younger
(8yrs.) NY girl Lydia Chauncey in 1855 (she's as much of a mystery as
William). After his discharge from the Army after the Civil War he
became a tobacco dealer and traveled to VA frequently where family lore
said he had a common-law wife in VA. Who knows, the illusive Coles.

MarySaban, will you please send me what you have of the Coles who went
to Washington County, VA. I'm eager to see if any of the given names
match up with any of ours. I've found first names were often repeated
some generations later. In addition, Washington County is not far from
Grayson.
Cole (meaning cabbage or slaw) is an English version of the original
German, which was Kohl (cabbage) & would likely be similar to the
German, as is the language. I found some entries under the misspelling
of Coal. I don't rely on what I see on the web for these observations.
Thanks for your help.

Hi - I am a descendent of John Cole - who was born about 1793 in
Pennsylvania or Virginia. He lived in Ohio and was in the War of 1812. He married
Sarah Willet in Ross County, Ohio in 1822 and moved to Parke County, Indiana
in 1839 and died in 1848. Can find no other information on John or his
wife, Sarah. Don't know why Coles are so hard to find - Thanks for your
information on your Charles. Donna Cole Wiesley

I am descended from Charles Cole, Sr. (born about 1761, died 1831) from
Grayson County, VA. None of the names mentioned are familiar to me, &
the German ancestry certainly isn't.
We've never been able to go back any further than Charles Cole, Sr. &
several have tried. Virginia is, of course, located next to Kentucky,
but that state has thus far never showed up in our investigations.
It is possible that some Coles migrated there. I will keep an open mind.
Good luck locating those particular Coles.

End of COLE Digest, Vol 10, Issue 3
***********************************
My two Cole lines came from New England to Washington County VA prior to the
Revolution. They definitely were not of German descent.
That said, I have discovered in helping my granddaughter research her
father's line, there was a Cole line in New England that originally was
spelled with a K and by various spellings. They were of Dutch descent.
While her particular line came west gradually, it would not surprise me to
see some of them move south into VA and NC as so many other New Englanders
did.

Thanks for letting everyone know about the Cole picture. The name Venable/Vanable sound familiar. But right now my Family Tree is up dating so I am unable to look it up. Please send me your email to cojocj(a)sbcglobal.net so I can let you know what I find. Thanks Judy Cole

Shelley, thanks for being a "rescuer" of old photos...we need more of
you out there. I do not have this person in my tree, but my Coles were
from VA and KY.
I am not familiar with any of the names. Sorry I cannot be of more
help. Someone out there knows him! Good luck.

I've "rescued" an old photograph of Harvey Venables COLE which was taken at
the Adams Studio in Pueblo, CO and dated 1896. Harvey is just an infant in
the photograph. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following

(1899-1964) and d. 16 Jun 1971 in San Diego, CA and is buried in the Fort
Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, CA. Harvey was a Navy Veteran
from WWI.
Census records provide the following details:
1900 census of Pueblo, CO:
Albert W. COLE, age 35, born Aug 1864, married 5 years, born IL, parents
born Germany/KY, a Novelty Worker
Ada M. COLE, wife, age 26, born Aug 1873, married 5 years, 1 child/1 living,
born Nova Scotia, parents born Nova Scotia
Harvey V. COLE, son, age 4, born Dec 1895, born CO
1910 census of Portland, OR:

Harvey COLE, age 33, married at age 24, born CO, parents born USA/Canada, an
Aeroplane Mechanic

can be returned to the care of his family. If you are a member of this
family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me.
