All I know is that my great-great grandfather was Jonathan Cole, born in
1813 in North Carolina. I don't know his parents and I don't know which
county he was born in. I also don't know the names of any of his siblings. I
have information about him taken from census records.

Randy, I believe you replied to the wrong Sandy. I'm Sandy Crane and you
were contacted by Sandy Rowe.
However, it is true that my Cole line (Jonathan Cole) goes back to NC. We
have never been able to find out who his father was.

Hi Sandy,
Yes we have corresponded before I remember you well !
good to hear from you.
I have a good paper trail back to John Cole Sr.(family) born abt. 18 Apr.
1774 no proof of where he was born or who his parents were. Some
researchers
( Mamie Cole Gray ) say his father was Thomas Cole born abt. 1754 in NC
and
his father was a William Cole birth unk. died about 1760 Darlington Dist.
SC. They also say John Cole's Middle initial was "M" ! again I have no
proof of this and no one has ever shown any that I know of.
Have you seen any of the Cole research by Mrs. Leslie Alford at
the SC Library? I'm trying to go through some of her data now.
I descended from David Cole born 1813 Darlington District SC (son
of John Cole & Achsah Newman) David's wife was Elizabeth Jane McLendon.
Sorry I can't be of more help but will keep you posted if I find anything,

have you in my address book.

I have 13 Lorenzo Dow Coles in my file. (check out website below)
Lorenzo was a prominent Preacher in the area of Virginia and people
named their boys after him. I don't know how far he traveled doing his
preaching. I have one in NY, quite a few in NC and Virginia and some
from nowhere. I have a couple of different Cole Families at my site. I
figured that I would put them there in case I could connect them to my
Coles. If anyone can add to my file, give corrections, etc. I would
appreciate it. This info is all from the internet. The Only line that
I have actually researched is mine.

Arden,
Don't feel alone in this illusive group. I have been searching my Cole line on and off for about ten years and cannot get past my great, great grandfather. It's like they disappear when I try to go back any farther. Good luck to you. It doesn't seem that our Cole lines come together.

These Cole's seem to be and illusive group. This is one of my stumbling
blocks also.
Thomas Cole abt. 1791 somewhere in Ireland, married to Rity, Kity ? born
abt. 1802, also Ireland. They emigrated to England to St.
Andrew-Holborn, borough of Finsbury ouside of London with their two
sons. William born 1829 (my great grandfather) and Thomas born 1831. The
census record was 1851. The sons eventually come to the US because
William married 1855 in Brooklyn to Lydia Chauncey born 1837 in NY (also
illusive) and had nine children. William fought in the Civil War. I have
his records and this was where I learned he was born in Ireland, local
census records showed England as birthplace and this was what family
said....."he came from England". I am at a complete loss as to where to
look further and so far with all the "Coles" reporting in I am no closer
to finding a birthplace for my William
Arden
COLE, CHAUNCEY, ADAM, ADLER, BEAVER, SCHERMULY, TERHORST, ZYFERS
My Coles are though New England as well. Have you come across a Lorenzo D. Cole or an Edson L. Cole? They would have been around in the 1800's. Lorenzo was Edson's father. I know Edson had a child in 1879 who was my grandfather, Roy E. Cole. I have been stuck here for a long time. Edson was in Litchfield Co., CT when my grandfather was born, and Lorenzo was in ME for awhile.
