Lynn and all other Coles:
I am sure that we are related, since Charles Cole, Jr. (Grayson County,
VA), ismy great great great grandfather and my great great great
grandmother was Elizabeth Stoneman.
In case anyone is interested, my father Willard G. Cole won the Pulitzer
Prize for Meritorious Service to Journalism for his fight against the Ku
Klux Klan in Columbus County, NC in 1953. He was editor of The News
Reporter, a semi-weekly paper.
You won't find much on the web about him. It's all in my office,
awaiting the retirement of my daughter.

Hi Lynn,
I agree with you that Mathew and Charles are related. I would say that
they would be brothers, since my Charles was born about 1761 (not
proven). I have seen some indications that he may have been born later.
This would make more sense, since he married Elizabeth in 1795. That
would put him in his 20's if he was born about the time Mathew was
born. Charles Jr. was born about 1806 or later.

Mathew Cole, 1850 Owsley Co., KY Census states he is from MD. This is
the same Mathew Cole from Lee, Grayson, etc who migrated to KY with his
son, William.
It is said that his son Aaron Cole had migrated previously, and was
killed in the Mexican American War. (I have no proof of that other than
the written note of another descendant about his heritage.) Mathew seems
to be living on his land that his son had gotten by a County Land
Warrant. William is living next door.
Mathew and William are my ancestors. From the tax notes I found at the
KY History Center, this would have been about 1848.
12 Apri 1847 Lee Co., VA Deed Book 10, p.198
Mathew and Catherine Cole sold 85 acres for $600.
1848: Living on Sturgeon Creek in Owsley Co., KY
1849
1851
1852 according to tax records; Mathew disappears from the tax rolls
around 1854. At this time, he must have been around 80 years old.
Elias Cole is also listed as a grandfather in my cousin's family Bible.
He was not colored, even though listed as such in one census. My first
cousin, who is a Cole, did DNA testing. There is no DNA to support
this. Many times if someone were swarthy or Indian, they were listed
that way merely by the observance of the census taker. According to
talk among the family, there may have been a Native American Indian
grandmother on the maternal side which might account for this assumption.
Since Mathew witnessed the marriage of Charles Cole and Elizabeth
Stoneman, I would say he probably was related in some manner, especially
if Charles related that they were from Maryland, since Mathew states he
was born there.
Are we looking at Charles Cole, SR as being the father????
I would still like to figure out from whence the Charles Coles's
(grandfather, father and son) came before they arrived in Grayson
County, VA. 1775 or something like it for the first Charles Cole. Maybe
it was only two Charles Coles, theyounger a wagon maker.
I know I've asked before, but perhaps someone has come across some info
since my last try.

Hi - in reference to the COLE connection, my Coles are as follows:
My father, Wilmon P. KEYS born 29 Mar1886 in Independent Hill, Pr. Wm.
County, VA was the son of Lucy COLE Keys, Lucy b. 05 May1854 in Pr. Wm. Cnty.
Lucy was the daughter of Wilmon P. COLE. Wilmon b. 23 Jun 1815 in Pr. Wm.
Cnty. and Mary E. COX. Wilmon P. was the son of Matthias COLE. Matthias
was the son of Daniel COLE (Jr?). Daniel COLE Jr. was the son of Daniel
COLE Sr. and Constance KING.
There is quite a story about Daniel Jr's - son, another Daniel, about him
leaving home to fight in the Rev. War.
A good bit of my information about my Coles, and it is lengthy, came from
a cousin, Carolyn Lynn. She has extensively found a lot of information
about the Coles. They did marry with the Lynns. So, it seems my Coles from
Daniel Sr., are the same as your Coles? gentsia KEYS, etc.

My Daniel COLEs (Sr & Jr) were a "near miss" in this post because of the
Fauquier County, Virginia location. My Daniel COLEs were originally in
Prince William County, VA as early as 1740. Daniel Jr. served in the
Revolution from there. Daniel Jr died in Culpeper County in 1851.
Daniel
Jr's daughter, Frances, married Thomas KELLY Jr and Daniel Jr himself
married 2nd, Thomas Kelly's sister, Mary Ann Kelly. The Kelly's were of
Fauquier County, before Culpeper County.
That said, I can't connect our COLE's but maybe you will see something?

Seeking parents of William Cole b1742 and brother John Cole b1755; lived
