A couple of small corrections to the data below - Daniel Cole's wife was not
Ruth (Chandler) Collier - she was Ruth Collier, at least in all probability
she was Ruth Collier. I covered this in my book on Daniel Cole - I checked
the claims that she was Ruth Chester or Ruth Chandler. I could find no Ruth
Chester, and Edmund Chandler's daughter Ruth was far too young to have
married Daniel Cole (she was b. ca1648). Also, Ruth Collier was likely b. in
England (not Mass.), ca1627-28 because her father William Collier did not
come over until about 1633.

I have found these different spelling of the Cole Family: Coles, Coal,
Coale, Coalas, Coel, Kohl. Depends on what country they came from. My
husbands family comes from Daniel Sr Cole b 1614 England married to Ruth
(Chandler) Collier b 1627 Mass. Hope we can all get our familys to match.
Guess every one knows that the name Coleson came from someone saying that
guy was Cole;s son and Coleman was from when a Cole had slaves and they was
called Cole's man. That is what I was told by a genealogist. My family
is George J. Smith b 1806 Mass and married to Delana Smith of Mass. Can't
find his birth cert or his parents name. I will research our Cole family
and let you know if I find a match. Judith Smith Cole
I wish I could help you with your line, however I am familiar only with the
Cape Cod Coles, and the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Coles before 1800.
I have researched the Daniel Cole of Eastham line. In the first 4
generations some of his descendants went to Connecticut, Maine, Vermont and
Nova Scotia.
The James Cole of Plymouth line pretty much stayed in Massachusetts for the
first 4 generations with the exception of a few going to Connecticut and
Maine.

Susan,
Here is another Cole line: My GG Grandfather was John Cole of England who
was married to Mary Honogon (b: Mearsaw, NY) (he was a mason and built the
facing for the Belvedere City Hall building). For some reason my father
called him "George Cole'. My Grandfather was William James Cole born in
Belvedere, IL, March 9, 1865 and was a Railroad Conductor (d:July 3, 1933).
His wife (my Grandmother) was Alice Bush Cole (b: July 27, 1869; d: Oct 1,
1947). She was born in Busti, NY, (father: Austin Bush; mother Alta Bush)
a descendent of Moses Bush. Alice was a piano teacher. My father was
Everett Bush Cole (b: April 17, 1910; d: August 21, 2001) born in
Jamestown, NY. My mother was Joy Waddell Cole (b: April 14, 1927; d: May
14, 1971) born in Rochester, NY.
I believe my Cole ancestors came from either Ireland or Wales. When my
father was stationed in England during WWII for the Normandy Invasion (Omaha
Beach) he was walking down a street when a local stopped him wanting to
know what he was doing in a Yank uniform.
I have not found much more than that. I have my Grandfather (William Cole)
and Grandmother's (Alice Cole) death certificates. My Grandfather had a
previous marriage. One was my Uncle Fred Cole (born about 1900) and the
other my Aunt Olive Cole (I believe she was older; she was a nurse during
WWI). Uncle Fred had two sons who I believe live in Colorado.

Hello Cole List -
Glad to see so much activity on the list. I have posted on the list before
but quite awhile ago.
My g-g-g-grandfather Harvey Cole (1791-1863) m. Nancy Taylor (1788-1866).
Harvey had siblings Elisha, Russell, Charles, Amanda and Rachel - that I
know of. Harvey owned land in Cairo, Greene County, New York in 1812 +/- .
Nancy Taylor was the granddaughter of James Barker, an attorney, who came
from England with 23 tenant families. He settled near the present town of
Cairo, Greene, New York calling his settlement Woodstock (not THE Woodstock
J ). Have been looking for Harvey's parents. Have lots more info on people
listed and am willing to share.
Thanks in advance J

Rosemary,
I have found various spellings for his name, such as Barnet, however he was
born Barnard Cole at Swansea, Mass. on 11 Feb. 1723/4. <VR:46>
His parents were Nathaniel4 Cole Jr. (Nathaniel3, John2, James1) and Sarah
Thomas. Nathaniel4 and Sarah were married at Swansea 10 Oct. 1721. <VR:197>
Barnard Cole was named in the will of his grandfather, Nathaniel3, dated 28
May 1744 <original will from Bristol Co. Courthouse> Note as well that in a
1745 quitclaim, Elizabeth Cole, the widow of Nathaniel3 (and Barnard's
grandmother), mentions Barnard and says he is a blacksmith of Swansey.
<Bristol Co. PR 17:492-3>
So from the above, we know Barnard was still residing in Swansey in 1745.
There is no record in Swansea of a marriage for him there.
Barnard's generation is not within the scope of my book, therefore I have
not followed him further. I always find it interesting to find these New
England men showing up in other regions and wonder why they would wander so
far. It couldn't have been land - there was plenty available much closer.
Hope this is your Barnet Cole, Rosemary.

Four or five years ago now, I had my brother do the DNA for our family.
My maiden name is Keys. Therefore, the info I get from the project is
firstly for the KEYS DNA. Since there are so many other surnames in our lines,
from time to time I have to check the other surnames I am interested in.
Unfortunately, although I have more information on my Cole line, my direct
male Cole line ceased when my grandmother's only brother died in the Civil
War. I'm not up on how far they have come on doing the female DNA, but I
should look into it. It's not cheap to do.... which can be a problem also.
Anyway - just my thoughts. gentsia

My 4th Great-grandfather was Jonathan ( JOHN) Cole, born 18 April 1744, Massachusetts.
I don't know, if John was born in Windsor, Berkshire Co. Massachusetts, but he is listed on the 1790 & 1800 Federal census as living there, and as his sons, Jonathan & Willard were both born in Windsor ( 1768 &1779 it is possibility that he was. He moved to Gorham, Ontario Co. New York after 1810, dying there on 9 July 1817. He and his wife Hannah ( maiden name unknown) are both buried at Baldwin Corner's Cemetery in Rushville, New York
I have information on only two children.
1. Jonathan Cole,( my 3rd GGF) born 3 September 1768, Windsor, Massachusetts, died 9 August , Gorham, Ontario Co. New York. Spouse Mary Ann( Polly) Brewer
Children: Willard, William, Hervey, Melinda ( my 2 GG-grandmother) Gilbert and Samuel
2. Willard Cole, born June 1779, Windsor, MA. died 30 Dec. 1844, Gorham. Spouse Hannah Punderson Chapman
Children: Esther A., Willard Punderson ( died as infant) Hannah Polley, John Hadley( died as infant) Cyrus Chapman, George Washington and Amanda.
If anyone is also researching a Cole line from Windsor, MA or Gorham, New York , I'd great appreciate any information you are willing to share.
Thank You

Subject: [COLE] COLE'S - JAMES & DANIEL Info. from Kin Folks
It is correct that JAMES Cole of Plymouth andDANIEL Cole of Eastham were
not brothers. In my last book "Early Descendants of Daniel Cole" I included
a transcription of the 1630 will of ZACHEUSCole, the brother of Daniel
Cole. Zacheus mentions his brothers JOB, JOHN, & DANIEL, but does not
mention a JAMESCole. The same for brother JOHN'S will - no mention of a
James Cole.
As for the date that DANIELcame to New England, it was sometime between
late 1637 (brother: JOHN'S will) and 6 April 1640 <PCR 1:144> when he was
granted land. His brother John's will indicated he did not know if Daniel
was still living but if he was, his share would have to be delivered to
him.
This shows us that the two were not in regular touch, therefore Daniel was
most likely still in England in 1637.
In my upcoming book on JAMES Cole, I tried to determine when he came to
New
England. He is last mentioned in England when his first two children were
baptized at Barnstaple, Devonshire in 1627 and 1628. Since no other
baptisms have been found there for any other children, JAMES may have been
on the move after 1628 - but whether to other parts of England or to New
England is unknown. He first shows up in Plymouth on the March 1633/4 tax
list <PCR 1:28> and he was made a freeman sometime between 1 January 1633/4
and 1 January 1634/5. <PCR 1:4> He was in Plymouth early enough to have
been
considered an "ancient freeman" in 1662. <PCR 4:18>
We can determine then that DANIEL came to New England ca1638-39 and JAMES
came over ca1630-32.

I am a descendant of JAMES Cole of Devonshire and lately of Plymouth. The
intermarriage of the two major Cole lines (JAMES & DANIEL) -- and I
believe there was more than one intermarriage -- produced an interesting
lineage and a significant portion of the historic settlement of the Great
Plains; the evidence of their influence is present in much of the Midwest,
either from the separate lines or from the merged.
There is even speculation that the Dutch Kool line stems from an early
immigration of English Coles escaping religious persecution in England to
the Netherlands, much as the Plymouth Pilgrims had done before their voyage
to North America. Many recent researchers have contrived to associate
DANIEL Cole with JAMES, especially since they immigrated about the same
time
to nearly the same place, but no evidence for this has been uncovered, and
what DNA samples have been provided from both lines has so far
substantiated
that no "blood line" is common between the two founding families.
As far as participation in the RootsWeb forum, much had been done far
earlier in its formation, with far more entries than some others, probably
exhausting the available source material and answering (or never answering)
the many questions proffered.
I maintain a casual vigil, realizing that perhaps once in two years a
revelation occurs and I can add a statement to my genealogy. Is it
worthwhile? Of course it is.
My husband's mother was Mary Elizabeth Cole. Our Cole is from Devon,
England. The Samuel Cole married Mariah Taylorand both were born and
married in Holsworthy. We believe Samuel to be the son of Matthew and
Mary nee Thorne - baptised 29 Sept 1794 in Holsworthy and have been
trying to link them to the Cole's in Buckland Brewer.
Samuel and Maria and family emigrated to St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada in
1843 as part of the Bible Christian (branch of Methodism) emigrations
that left from Devon.
My husband had his DNA done by Ancestry.com but so far not finding any
Cole's or Taylor family that he is linked to at the present. We would
love to find other Cole's and confirm Samuel's parents and possible
siblings.

I have wanted to try the DNA to see if my Cole tree might link up to one of the others. I descend from the John Cole (c1781-1814) and Isabel Montgomery (Russell County, Virginia) group. I have read some thoughts on his parents but nothing in official records.

I had DNA done for my husband.
The results are posted on Family Tree DNA. Check the Cole/Coles Y-DNA project.
It would appear that we have a close connection to Stephen Cole 1700-1744 in Chester, PA.
Still have not been able to connect our Charles Cole b 1820 Tennessee to that family though.
Would love to hear from anyone researching that line.

Dear "Rootsweb."
How can I enter other name(a)rootsweb.com discussions, or start new ones? Do i simply put the name -- for example "Garrick" plus "@rootsweb.com"?
Thanks
Charles Garrick
Just to clarify a point made below about finding a woman called "Mrs." in a
marriage record.
The first thing you have to do is see if the groom was called "Mr." - if so,
then "Mr. and Mrs." were titles fitting their status in the community. If
she was the only one referred to as "Mrs.", then she was likely (but not
always) a widow. For some reason, researchers always make note of the "Mrs."
but ignore the "Mr."
In the case referred to below, the Harwich VR give the intentions (p.136) of
Mr. Daniel Cole 3d of Eastham and Mrs. Mary Cole of Harwich, 2 July 1762.
The marriage took place in Eastham, rec. in Harwich (p.493) and referred to
them as simply Daniel Cole Jr. and Mary Cole, m. 20 July 1762. So in this
case, since Mary Cole was not referred to once again as "Mrs.", she was
likely a single woman.
I checked my book "Early Descendants of Daniel Cole of Eastham, Mass."
published in 2010 to see if this couple might be identified (to see if Mary
was indeed single) but they are beyond the scope of my four generations.

Folks, I take it then that this Cole family in the original post is not the
Plymouth and Rhode Island Cole line? My paternal grandmother has two
different Cole's traced back of her second great grandmother's maternal
line. With this in mind we all need to remember that there is one thing
that we need to be watchful of when the research probably and eventually
turns to the IGI and Familysearch.org that when the name such as Mrs. Mary
Cole shows up that this spouse has not taken the surname of her husband and
was already a Cole by her father's surname. We also need to be mindful
that First Cousin's did marry back in those days too. As for my paternal
line John Cole of the Plymouth and Rhode Island Cole's married Mary Cole of
one of the Massachusetts original Cole's. Their daughter Mary Cole married
William Hoskins Jr. IV. Their daughter Hopestill married Amos King (son of
William and his second unnamed wife but not Mary Andrew King Sr. IV) in New
Salem, Hampshire County, Massachusetts in 1781. He is a Revolutionary War
Veteran on the side of the colonies. Bye the Bye Hampshire County was
split into 4 counties west of Worcester County in December 1811. New Salem
went to Franklin County. It appears from the will of William Hoskins Jr.
IV (Hoskins of the English to Ireland then the Colonies) had land interests
in Norfolk County where he gave to 3 daughters the use of a farm on one of
the Islands making up that county. The boundaries were Vermont on the
North, Connecticut on the South, and New York on the West. It is as I have
found very helpful to understand where these counties are located in
following and figuring where the records may be found and what the timeline
may have been.

Amy -
My line is through Matthias' son, Wilmon P. Cole, b. 1815, d. 1857, Pr.
Wm. Co. Married Mary E. Cox (of Loudoun Co.) 1842. Then Wilmon P's 4th
child, Lucy Cole, b. 1854, d. 1919. She married Henry Armistead Keys. My
father, Wilmon P. Keys, was their 4th born, 1886-1958. He is buried at Ft.
Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Md. I live in Beltsville - just south of
Laurel. I knew there were some Coles that moved into this area way back then
and that there are some buried in Laurel, but I have never been to that
cemetery. I lived in Beltsville until I moved to Arizona in 1996, and then
moved back here in 2008.
I am definitely going to go to your tree; and will look at the photos. I
have a tree on ancestry.com also, but I am trying to figure out what
happened to my tree on my computer - FTM. I "updated" to a newer version a
couple years ago and now I see that my tree is missing information that I know I
had in my older version. Trying to find it all. Anyway - we are related!

Gentsia -
Yup...my line starts with Daniel 1740-1797, then to his son Matthias, his
son
Alexander, his son John A., his son Henry Denmeade Cole. Henry married
twice...first to Amanda, and later to Sarah Effie. Effie was my great
great
grandmother. Her daughter Catherine had my grandmother Beverly.
I have photos of Henry, Effie, Catherine and Beverly. Beverly (Nana)
still
lives
in Laurel, MD. I also have a stack of old Cole / Souder photos from the
1880s,
1890s, early 1900s that I'm trying to put names on. If you go to my
family
tree
on Ancestry.com, you can see all those old photos. My username is
'sayegirls'
and the family tree is called Quinlan/Tomberlin Family Tree.
Which part of the tree do you belong to?

I am a descendant of James Cole of Plymouth through his son, James Cole Jr. I have written a book on my ancestors. Several pages are devoted to James Cole.
I would be pleased to exchange info if you wish.
