Greetings to the Cole's
My spouse has a great grandfather named Gabriel Cole who was awarded the
Medal of Honor during the Civil War. He was in the 5th Calvary at the time
and received his medal from the infamous General Custer who commanded the
unit.
Gabriel was born on 3/22/1831 in Painted Post, NY. He died in Tustin, MI
on 1/7/1907. Gabriel's father was William Cole who was born in Onondege
County, NY about 1806 and died near Painted Post, NY after 1890. I suspect
that William's father was Solomon Jabez Cole, born in MA and died in NY.
Anyone have any information about this line?
Thanks. Peter
Hello Cole list,
I am looking for the origin of my Coles. Some family notes say Holland. I
find Harvey owning land in Cairo, Greene County, New York
1812 +/-.
Harvey Cole b. 1791 d. 1863 m. Nancy Taylor b. 1788 d. 1866
Harvey's known siblings:
Elisha b. 1780-1790 d. 1841 m. Rosanna Linsley b. 1788
d. 1866
Russell b. 1792 d. 1852 m. Elizabeth Gridley b. 1794 d.
1861
Charles b. 1803 d. 1882 m. Thankful Merchant b. 1805 d. 1875
Amanda m. a Smith
Rachel
I have info on children of Harvey and Nancy - the death certificate of one
of the children says father and mother born Greene County, NY . I have my
doubts about that but don't know for certain.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Linda
Thank you to everyone who responded to my question of their Cole origin. Interesting!

This may be a partial answer answer to your query. I found a Sam Tucker in Arkansas in 1910, however, his spouse was an Ella b Illinois, but the children match up with the names you gave. I was unable to find him in 1900. Per the death certificate of the Sam Tucker on the MO State Archives database the informant was possibly one of his daughters who was a resident of Paragould, Arkansas. Prior to 1910 Missouri did not issue death certificates, however, if Jane died in Dunklin County there may be a record at the courthouse or possibly a cemetery listing on the county USGenWeb site.
MO Death Certs:
1) Charlie Tucker – d1912 abt 15y – mother: Jane Cole
2) William Erwin d 1918, abt19y – mother: Jane Cole
3) Sam d 1952 (b 6 Mar 1873TN), informant Mrs. Paul Everett, Paragould, Arkansas. Shows wife as Lillie. Father HenryTucker; mother Ellen Frances Cohorn
MO Archives:
http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/
1910 census: Friendship, Greene, Arkansas (Ancestry-originally transcribed asINCHES w/)
shows a Sam Tucker, age36, b TN; wife Ella 35 b IL – married 4 years. Tucker children – Ethel 14, Charles 12, Irvin 10, Fanny 1 4/12; Horner (stepchildren) – Emery 12,Robert, 10 and Nellie 8

Hello,
I have COLE's from England who settled in Boston, Ma. in the late 1800's.
I haven't gone back far enough to look for them in Ireland.
They had many children and most died in early childhood.
Joan
I too am having a problem with finding my Cole Ancestors. My Charles
Cole?? b. ca 1760-1770?? shows up in in Grayson County, Virginia in
1794. He marries Elizabeth Stoneman in Grayson County in 1795. Surety
for the bond is Richard Cole and witnessed by Matthew Cole. There is a
Charles Cole Listed in the Montgomery Co. VA 1792 Land Tax List.
There is a Charles Cole Listed in the Wythe Co. VA 1793 Land Tax List,
along with a Stephen, James, Matthew, and Richard.
I have seen these people listed before, as this is the part of Wythe
that became Grayson.
I am assuming that Richard and Matthew Cole are related to Charles -
either brothers or one being his father.

Well, the Cole family that I'm most familiar with is my own, and they're
all
Prince William County, VA Coles. My line migrated up to the D.C. area and
into
Howard County (Laurel/Savage) area. This particular line goes back in VA
as far
as the first relative I've traced, a Daniel Cole, who was born in VA in
1740.
Not sure where they came from before that, but I'm pretty sure I'll run
into
emigration from Ireland / England if I'm lucky enough to find connections
further back before Daniel.
Amy - I think we just may have, at least in part, a connection through our
Coles. There is more than one Daniel in the line, but I do have a Daniel
Cole, DOB 1740, in Pr. Wm. Co. Died in 1797, PWC. From the Daniel b.
1740, my line then comes down through one of his sons.... Matthias Cole. Does
any of this sound familiar? gentsia
