I've "rescued" an old photograph of Calvin Wheaton RATHBUN which was taken
by the W. C. Schaffer Studio in Providence, Rhode Island. The photograph
appears to have been taken in the 1890's or early 1900's with Calvin
appearing to be in his 60's or 70's at the time. Based on limited research
I was able to gather the following information regarding Calvin and his
family:
Calvin Wheaton RATHBUN or RATHBONE b. 29 Dec 1831 in Exeter or Beach Pond,
RI to parents John RATHBONE (b. 15 Feb 1779 in Exeter, RI) and Thankful
BLIREN or BLEVINS or BLIVIN (b. 31 Jul 1796). Calvin was married 5 times,
the first time to Mary Towns BAKER on 1 Jul 1854 in Providence, RI, the
second marriage was to Mary A. WILLIAMS on 1 Sept 1865 in Providence, the
third wife was Mary A. GREEN whom he married on 25 Oct 1866 also in
Providence, the fourth was Elizabeth Aldrich HAWLEY who he married 1 Jan
1869 in Providence, and his last and fifth wife was Ellen A. COLE who me
married on 21 Feb 1879 in Providence as well. Calvin died 5 Mar 1911 in
Providence, RI.
Census records provide the following information:
1870 census of Providence, RI: - living in the home of Daniel A. & Phoebe
SMITH
Galvin W. RATHBURN, age 37, Works in Wood Yard, born RI
Living directly next door is - Teresa RATHBURN age 75, born RI (could this
be his Mother?)
1880 census of Pawtucket, RI:
Calvin RATHBURN, age 47, Clerks in Office, born RI, parents born RI
Ellen RATHBURN, wife, age 32, Keeping House, born CT, parents born RI
1900 census of Pawtucket, RI:
Calvin W. RATHBONE, age 68, born Dec 1831, a widower, born RI, parents born
RI
+ 1 servant
I am hoping to be able to return the photograph to a member of Calvin's
family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might
be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley

Thanks very much. I have put Charles in my list of NC COLE candidates.

Jo,
Were any of your COLEs in NC between 1700 and 1790. If so, what
counties? My 3GGrandfather, John M. COLE, Sr was born in NC (county unknown) in
1774. John moved to SC sometime between birth and 1790. He raised his
family in Sumter District SC and died there in 1834.

Jo, We have corresponded before about our Coles. My connection is
Charles, Charles, David M & Milton W.
I invite everyone to look at the first url. I have lots of Coles, not
just my line. When I see a new Cole, I
add them to my software, so that when I find the connection of these
Coles to my Coles, the info is
already there and I just have to connect them. I have gotten the info
from the internet, without
verification. My line of Coles is the only line I am verifying. It
might give someone a start though.
The first url in my signature is the best site for info. the second one
is just for my line of coles.
I do have the permission for Charles Sr to marry Elizabeth Stoneman. I
think you were
a member of my private site at MyFamily.

Need help on the following please.
John DuBois Cole
born 8 Mar 1822-death certificate; according to his census, March is correct, years 1821/1822
died 19 Mar 1914 Salisbury, CT-death certificate
married first Margaret Boinay between 1846-1849.
married second Annie Blake 19 Feb 1882 New York-marriage certificate
Parents listed on marriage certificate Hiriam and Clara Cole; also John's place of birth is listed as Sharon, CT. Unable to find his birth in Sharon.
The only Hiram Cole I found in the 1820 Census was living in Cornwall, CT.
There are two Hiram Coles in the 1830 Census-one in Cornwall the other in Newtown CT.
Does anyone know who this Hiram and Clara Cole are?
I believe Charles Cole was my great-great-great grandfather. His son,
also Charles Cole, my great-great grandfather was married to Elizabeth
Haga. Jonas Cole was my great grandfather, Thomas Cole, my grandfather,
and Willard G. Cole, my father.
Can't give you more than that until I have a chance to look up some things.

There is a family tree on this ancestry site that has John Clarence Cole
death 13 Mar 1949. No place mentioned but if you think it is Waukegan, Il
you should inquire at vital statistics and order his death certificate or it
could have been Florida as of 1945 he lived in the Pinellas area. I don't
know what all information it will contain. Sometimes it depends on the
person filling out the forms and what they knew.
In 1935 and 1945 (state census) they lived in Clearwater Florida.
Clarence G was born according to his WW1 draft record 14 July 1888 in Tampa,
Florida. Is that where John Clarence became a citizen? That record might
give you the date he entered the US but from the census it looks like he was
about 1 or 2 years old. You should be able to find him in the US census
1870 and 1880 but off hand I don't see anyone that looks like his family.
The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency and I don't know that the births are
recorded in England. Central registration started in 1837 in England. The
best you might find is a baptism record if you knew the religion. I see a
John Ashley William Cole birth registered in 1842 but nowhere near the Isle
of Man, more like Hampshire. You could go to the Isle of Man board and see
if anyone there can help.
Hope this gives you some ideas.
Janis
Looking for the parents and birth information of John Clarance Cole. What I can't confirm so far: Born Dec 3 1862 in Montreal, Quebec to Eliza McLevy Cole and John Ashley Cole. What I do know: the US Census lists John C. with his second wife, Gracie. His mother is listed as Canadian and his father as Isle of Man or England. John C. "naturalized" in the US in 1888 (also as per US Census), the year before his son Clarence G. Cole (mother: Alice Kinsmen Cole) was born.
I'm looking for a birth registration for John C., or even a death registration for John C. (Waukegan, IL) that lists further information about his parents so I can begin my research on them. I would also love to find out when John C and his parents moved to the US, among other things, but that's enough for now!
With
thanks,
Elise

I have seen a lot of posts about different William Cole families. So, I
will post my William Cole.
Looking for parents of William Cole, born 1742 who married Elizabeth
Hardesty in 1769 in Baltimore County, MD. His brother John Cole born 1755,
married Elizabeth Cullison in 1782 in Baltimore County.
Both William and John ended up in what is now Barbour County, WV. Need
the names of their parents.
thanks, Lyle Corder
Hello Brian, No I haven't heard of the book before.
They are quite expensive. I'll see if I can find them in the library.
I do have William Cole's family back quite far, his son Thomas is my family
line.

Subj: Re: [COLE] Tennessee Cole (with New England Connections)
The only book I know of that Redmond Cole published was about the Coles
of
Johnson Co., TN. I have a copy, but I'm not sure if it's readily
available for
purchase. Here's the entry for that book from my Bibliography:
-----------------
Cole, Redmond Selecman; Mary C. Cole, ed. The Coles of Johnson County,
State
of Tennessee. Tulsa, OK: By the editor, 1961–62. The title on the cover
of
this paperbound book says The Story of Captain Jesse Cole of Johnson
County,
Tennessee, His Ancestry and Related Families. Redmond Cole began
compiling
this book, his only published major work, about a year before his death.
In the
Foreword written in February 1958, he said:
“Years have been spent in contacting known descendants of Capt. Jesse
Cole
[(Sampson6, Joseph5, Hugh4, Hugh3, Hugh2, James1)] to acquire essential
facts
concerning this man and his descendants wherever found.... In the very
nature
of things, I have had to rely in many instances, on the facts supplied by
my
informants. I have, where possible, checked my data against records found
in
courthouses at Elizabethton, Tenn., and Mountain City, Tenn., and in some
instances, data gathered from Federal Census records. The data used, I
verily
believe, is substantially an accurate story of the families mentioned.”
After Redmond’s death on 16 July 1959, his wife Mary finished the book.
She
wrote in October 1960:
“This story of Capt. Jesse Cole was the last genealogical work he was
attempting. I had been helping him arrange his material so hope I can
retain enough
of his knowledge to understand his arrangement and proceed with the
records
to save them from being lost, scattered, burned or buried in some hidden
box.
So many members of the family have expressed interest that I feel I would
be
false to his ideals, if I let the project die. So I will publish the
material I now have on hand, hoping I will not make too many errors.”

Actually, three James Cole descendant brothers (sons of Joseph Cole and
Freelove Mason) married three Daniel Cole descendant sisters (daughters
of Israel
Cole III and Remember Burgess), and they all lived in Washington Co., VA,
having come from MA via NY.
There are a number of Grindstaff's in the Jesse Cole book's index. I am
interested in contacting any descendants of Joseph and Freelove Cole.
Jim, is Abel F. Cole a descendant of James Cole of Plymouth? I couldn't
easily find him in my records.

Descendants of James Cole of Plymouth

A few years ago, a coworker from the Bristol TN area was reading a
book his mother had (History of Johnson County 1986, Sesquicentenial
Edition (Johnson County TN), Johnson County Historical Society, LC #
85-52178.), and thought it very coincidental that there was
significant mention of COLEs with a New England linkage. (I'm a NE
COLE.) Whereas I was just beginning to dabble into genealogy, he was
kind enough to let me review this book and I copied pages and input
much of the information. The info I found indicated that the JAMES of
Plymouth MA line and the DANIEL of Eastham MA line came together when
Sampson COLE (James1, Hugh2, Hugh3, Hugh4, Joseph5) married Kezia COLE
(Daniel1, Israel2, Israel3, Israel4). Sampson had another wife, Lydia
Wheeler, with which he sired Shady Valley TN's most famous prodigal
son, Capt. Jesse Cole.
I have this documented digitally, however this was done, a while
back, before I knew the importance of documenting sources. Some of
the info is from the aforementioned book, the E.B. Cole book on JAMES
of Plymouth, as well as from FIDO-Net BB's I was monitoring at the
time. I also have a pretty extensive GEDCOM given to me by a gent
named Albert Grindstaff, who I've subsequently lost contact with, who
is a descendant of the Capt. Jesse COLE of Shady Valley line. I can
provide either or both in GEDCOM, but as I mentioned, the 'sourcing'
is quite minimal, however, it may be useful in providing a 'pointer'
in your research.
Please contact me OFF-LIST at <jamesecole(a)bellsouth.net>, if you're
interested.

This John was married to Isabel Montgomery. I am still looking for any definite information on John's parents. Any help would be appreciated. I am from his line of son John Wesley -> Dial-> Logan.
