Thank You Lori for all that you sent on your family. It was a little hard
to read at first but once I got the feel I caught on. Unfortunately I didn't
see any that I think I connect to in your families.
Thanks again and good luck with your research!

Dear Colleen,
There is an Alvah Cole in Jefferson County during Civil War Era, his family
and relations moved to Michigan, West Michigan, Kent County, most near SE
side, Caledonia and Alaska in the 1880's -- the years the Federal Census was
lost. I have a Ransom Cole, died serving in the Civil War from smallpox, left
his family destitute. His family moved to Emmet County/Petosky Michigan with
several other Cole families after the War, and then they all moved downshore
to Kent County - Alaska and Caledonia area and became farmers. Alvah Cole
is listed with this group. I do not know how they are related, but they both
show up in Theresa, Jefferson County, Methodist Episc Church Records, and in
Jefferson County Census Records prior to and during the Civil War. There
were several Cole families.

Colleen,
I haven't a Alvah Cole that I'm aware of, but I've only started to do some
serious research into my Cole line, so I suppose anyone is a possibility.
I'll be on the look out for Alvah . Do you have a birth date /place for him?
parents ? siblings ?

Also, when you say direct male descendant, does it have to be strictly
through his paternal line in every generation?
Mary,
Yes. Got to FTDNA.com for all the information you need on anything related to y-DNA.

Can you give us more information on the two haplogroups and the lines you
are speaking about - connected back to Denmark and possibly to a Roman
soldier stationed in England? The latter suggests a Mediterranean group.
Also, when you say direct male descendant, does it have to be strictly
through his paternal line in every generation?
Mary
Researching both Daniel Cole line and James Cole line - related to both.

Is anyone researching this line.....
John Cole, born 18 April 1744, probably Massachusetts- died 9 July 1817 in Gorham, Ontario Co. New York
spouse: Hannah ( maiden name unknown) born Gorham, 31 March 1746, died Gorham 3 Dec. 1816.
Their son Jonathan, my 4th G-grandfather, was born 3 Sept. 1768 in Berkshire Co. Massachusetts, married about 1790 in Gorham , Mary Ann ( Polly) Brewer, born 1 May 1773 in New Hampshire & died 19 May 1869 in Colebrook, Ashtabula Co. Ohio. I have information on one of Jonathan's siblings- Willard, born 1779, Windsor, Berkshire Co. Massachusetts, died 30 Dec. 1844, Gorham, New York. He married Hannah Punderson Chapman in Windsor in 1803.
If anyone is connected to this line or has information regarding it, I would very much appreciate being contacted.
Thank You
Joanne, Salem, Oregon
Mary
A DNA sample for a male can only tell the direct paternal line as in the Y
chronisone in inherited in tact from father to son. The only changes are
change mutations so if you match 35 or 36 of 36 then you are closely related in
that paternal line. This means
your father, his father, his father, his father, his father, his father, his
father, his father, his father etc.
If at any point in the chain you are trying to go through a female line you
have interruped the links.
The same is true for the mitochondrial DNA except it shows the maternal
side. A man gets it from his mother but does not pass it on. A daughter has
the same as her mother, her mother, her mother, her mother, her mother, her
mother, her mother back. If she is Euopean they have traced back to a basic 7
patters hence the book of about 10 years ago "The Seven Daughters of Eve."

Jennie,
Do a Google search for FTDNA. All the information is there.
My relationship to the Eastham Coles (Daniel) had to be in England before
the migration to America. As I recall, I am two repeats different at two
markers of thirty-seven from a descendant of Daniel of Eastham.

Good Morning Pam Thompson and Jim Cole!
I have been researching my COLE family for over 20 years and have yet to
find the parents of my John COLE. My John COLE is my
great-great-great-great-grandfather. The most I knew was information on his son David Lyman COLE (my
3-great-grandfather). I am hoping that maybe one of you might have heard of
him or his COLE family. If I have marked a name with an * I have other
information on them. I do have US Federal Census, Wills, Land Patents/Records and
other types of different records to back this up as this is my COLE family.
This is what I know:
John COLE - b. abt 1784 in Pennsylvania (1850 US Federal Census, Indiana)
d. bef 11 Mar 1851 in Crawford County, Indiana, USA (date son David
bought other siblings out)
marriage 1: m. abt 1805, wife's name believe to have been Catherine

Kentucky or Indiana. I am lead to believe she was called Catherine.
d. bef Jun 1846
(Story goes that John's wife had died and he had several young
children while passing through Tennessee.
He was told to go to the Indian village for a new wife. He did and
was presented by the chief a 6 ft tall Indian woman)
Children believed to be of this union:

The only book I know of that Redmond Cole published was about the Coles of
Johnson Co., TN. I have a copy, but I'm not sure if it's readily available

-----------------
Cole, Redmond Selecman; Mary C. Cole, ed. The Coles of Johnson County,
State
of Tennessee. Tulsa, OK: By the editor, 1961–62. The title on the cover of
this paperbound book says The Story of Captain Jesse Cole of Johnson
County,
Tennessee, His Ancestry and Related Families. Redmond Cole began compiling
this book, his only published major work, about a year before his death. In
the
Foreword written in February 1958, he said:
“Years have been spent in contacting known descendants of Capt. Jesse Cole
[(Sampson6, Joseph5, Hugh4, Hugh3, Hugh2, James1)] to acquire essential
facts
concerning this man and his descendants wherever found.... In the very
nature
of things, I have had to rely in many instances, on the facts supplied by
my
informants. I have, where possible, checked my data against records found
in
courthouses at Elizabethton, Tenn., and Mountain City, Tenn., and in some
instances, data gathered from Federal Census records. The data used, I
verily
believe, is substantially an accurate story of the families mentioned.”
After Redmond’s death on 16 July 1959, his wife Mary finished the book. She
wrote in October 1960:
“This story of Capt. Jesse Cole was the last genealogical work he was
attempting. I had been helping him arrange his material so hope I can
retain enough
of his knowledge to understand his arrangement and proceed with the records
to save them from being lost, scattered, burned or buried in some hidden
box.
So many members of the family have expressed interest that I feel I would
be
false to his ideals, if I let the project die. So I will publish the
material I now have on hand, hoping I will not make too many errors.”

Actually, three James Cole descendant brothers (sons of Joseph Cole and
Freelove Mason) married three Daniel Cole descendant sisters (daughters of
Israel
Cole III and Remember Burgess), and they all lived in Washington Co., VA,
having come from MA via NY.
There are a number of Grindstaff's in the Jesse Cole book's index. I am
interested in contacting any descendants of Joseph and Freelove Cole.
Jim, is Abel F. Cole a descendant of James Cole of Plymouth? I couldn't

A few years ago, a coworker from the Bristol TN area was reading a
book his mother had (History of Johnson County 1986, Sesquicentenial
Edition (Johnson County TN), Johnson County Historical Society, LC #
85-52178.), and thought it very coincidental that there was
significant mention of COLEs with a New England linkage. (I'm a NE
COLE.) Whereas I was just beginning to dabble into genealogy, he was
kind enough to let me review this book and I copied pages and input
much of the information. The info I found indicated that the JAMES of
Plymouth MA line and the DANIEL of Eastham MA line came together when
Sampson COLE (James1, Hugh2, Hugh3, Hugh4, Joseph5) married Kezia COLE
(Daniel1, Israel2, Israel3, Israel4). Sampson had another wife, Lydia
Wheeler, with which he sired Shady Valley TN's most famous prodigal
son, Capt. Jesse Cole.
I have this documented digitally, however this was done, a while
back, before I knew the importance of documenting sources. Some of
the info is from the aforementioned book, the E.B. Cole book on JAMES
of Plymouth, as well as from FIDO-Net BB's I was monitoring at the
time. I also have a pretty extensive GEDCOM given to me by a gent
named Albert Grindstaff, who I've subsequently lost contact with, who
is a descendant of the Capt. Jesse COLE of Shady Valley line. I can
provide either or both in GEDCOM, but as I mentioned, the 'sourcing'
is quite minimal, however, it may be useful in providing a 'pointer'
in your research.

Hello all
I am Sue I am tracing
Cole's From Wembury,Devon Camelford, Blisand,St.Breward, Warleggan,Cardinham, St Neot Cornwall.
My cousin and I have hit a brick wall the the search for the death of Nathan or Nathaniel Cole, Coul. On the 1881 census his wife Annie is down as a widow. We have searched the BDM and can not find him anywhere. I have spent over 28 years on and off trying to find Nicolas born abt 1630 and the death of my Great Great grandfather Nathaniel Cole. I have searched nearly all the parishes in Cornwall and Devon collecting all the Cole's and variations I can find. I have bought wills looked at the church records and other people have checked the registers for me incase I have missed something.
His brother Christopher emigrated and died in April 1891 at Whitewater, Wisconsin, USA.
Nathan's son John Trace Cole was last found by us in Rhode Island.
His wife's parents and some of her siblings emigrated to Canada.
We are wondering if Nathan died in any of these places but do not know how to start looking.
We also hit another brick wall back with Nicolas Cole born about 1630 he married Phillipa about 1650.
They had the following children
2. i. NATHANIEL2 COLE, b. Abt. 1666, Saint Neot, Cornwall, England;
3. ii. NICHOLAS COLE, b. Abt.1650, Saint Neot, Cornwall, England;
4. iii. THOMASINA COLE, b. Abt. 1653, Saint Neot, Cornwall, England.
iv. PHILLIPA COLE, b. Abt. 1656, Saint Neot, Cornwall, England;
v. JANE COLE, b. Abt. 1659, Saint Neot, Cornwall, England; d. 23 March 1690, St Neot, CON.
5. vi. SAMUEL COLE, b. Abt 1662, Saint Neot, Cornwall, England.
Any advise would be appreciated. I have had a professional genealogist look for me as well.
>From Sue
Sue, am searching for ancestors of my great grandfather, Robert Nathaniel
Cole, born 1859 in Tennessee or Kentucky. I have not been able to connect
him to any of the many Cole clans in central US. He came to Arkansas in
1891 where he died in 1923. To the best of my knowledge no one in our
family ever knew of any relatives to this man. Will research in Wisconsin
to see if there may be any connection. Thank you for posting your
information.
