Elise,
I looked everywhere for my great-great grandfathers' Naturalization Record.
Like you, I had the census records to tell me when he came to U.S. and the
year he supposedly was naturalized. The Michigan State Library turned up one
document - called "Intent for Naturalization". From several sources I've
learned that many many people filed this document and for many reasons - mostly
because they didn't know they had to do anything else - failed to follow
thru with the actual naturalization process and paper work. I hope your
ancestor wasn't one of those, but you may be looking for something that isn't
there.

I am looking for information on Joseph C. Cole, born in Canada, approx 1835 and migrated to US either in 1848 or 1868. He married a lady named Sallie. They appear on the census for Green county, NC in the 1900 census. If anyone has any information about this couple I would appreciate it.

I'm truly hoping someone can help me with this query as I have hit dead ends to date.
My paternal great-great grandfather, John C (Clarance/Clarence) Cole in the 1920 census has indicated that he immigrated to the US in 1880, and he naturalized in 1888, the year his oldest son, Clarence Granville Cole, was born. At the time of the 1920 census, John was living with his second wife, Grace and their two children living at home at the time, in Waukegan, Illinois. According to the Florida State Archives, John did not naturalize in Florida, which is where John and his first wife, Alice, were living at the time that Clarence was born. I'm also told by the Lake County Clerk that John did not naturalize in Lake County according to their records.
Would anyone be able to assist me in locating John C. Cole's naturalization record? I am hoping that it will give me more information about John's parents and other clues it might hold.
Many thanks in advance!
Elise

Lynda,
In looking at the names you give, they are very similar to ones in my
line.
I reviewed my lists of children of the children of William L. Cole and
found no one
who matches Frank C. Cole. The dates weren't right either.
The Frank in my family was Joshua Franklin, b. abt. 1837. His next
youngest brother was William
Columbus, called "Lum" and Frank named one of his sons Columbus D. Cole.
Frank's oldest brother was Jesse J. Cole, born 1832. Most of this
family was too young
to have parented your Frank. What I don't know is the names of William
L. Cole's brothers
and sisters, but I wonder if one of his brothers might be the father of
your Frank. There were
numerous other Coles in western North Carolina and specifically in
Buncombe County. I've just
started looking into a clue that William L.'s father was born in
Maryland. Perhaps land
records will help.
I'll try to keep your question in mind.

I found this regarding John and Mary:
"The register of the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown, NJ, shows that
on March 9, 1755, John Cole was 'baptized and renewed covenant' and Mary
Cole 'renewed covenant.' Their four children, John (age 11), Joseph (age 9),
Phebe (age 5), and Hannah (age 1) were baptized. The register further show
that six more children were born to John and Mary Cole and were baptized, as
follows: David 1756, Daniel 1758, Sarah 1760, Masey 1762, Mary 1764, and
Lydia 1766. This family removed to Frederick County, VA, where John Cole's
will was produced to the Court in Winchester April 21, 1808, naming wife
Mary and sons John, Joseph, and Daniel and daughters Phebe, Hannah, Sarah,
Masy, and Mary. Mary Cole's will was produced to the Court in Winchester Feb
5, 1816. Her will states in part 'I bequeath to my daughter, Sarah Mann, the
tract of land I now live on as the land was willed to me by my husband John
Cole...' John and Mary Cole's son Joseph lived for a time in Montgomery
County, Va, and then Buncombe County, NC."
The Frederick Co. VA connection caught my eye. My Coles are Joseph b.
1760-1765 married possibly Ms. Bryson of York Co., SC, daughter of Hugh
Bryson. This family settled around Rutherford Co., NC/Spartanburg Co., SC
and whose descendants intermarried frequently with the Robbins family, whom
I have linked to Randolph/Rowan Co., NC back to Frederick Co., VA and then
back to Monmouth Co., NJ through DNA matches.
More on my Cole connection on my website: www.tamarastevens.com/genie1.html
Thanks,
Tamara

Thank you, all who responded about Clarinda and William L. Cole.
Katherine,
The dates you give for Jacob and Elizabeth Cole would seem to
make him more of an age to be a possible brother to William,
since William wasn't born until about 1813. I don't know the
names of any of William's siblings or parents. According to census records,
there were David Cole (two of them?) and Samuel Cole (I believe, I don't
have that handy right now) in the area. The most likely connection
was a Martha Cole, presumably a widow, since she was head of household in 1840.
I believe William and Clarinda were living with her then. I base this
assumption on the age/gender of the children in the home--4 boys first.
Here are my notes:
I have not been able to locate William Cole with absolute certainty in
1840. All censuses say he and Clarinda were both born in N.C. There is
no indication of where in N.C., but if the assumption is made that they
were from Buncombe County, there are two William Cole's listed as heads
of family in 1840. Closer examination, however, shows that the head of
household in one case was about ten years too old to be our William L.
Cole. There were many people of different ages in that household also,
rather than a cluster of young boys and there were no boys under ten.
The other William Cole is in the right age bracket but the boys are
spread out across age brackets again. There are also girls in both
families, whereas William and Clarinda had no girls in the same age
bracket as the early boys--at least none that lived.
That leaves houses with women heads of household. Sarah and Hannah Cole
are both quite elderly and have few younger people in their homes. But
the woman named Martha is possibly the mother of William with William
and his family living with her.
Here is the household lineup:
Martha Cole 50-60 a reasonable age to have a 27-year-old son
1 male 20-30 William should be about 24-27
2 women 20-30 One of these could be Clarinda; another could
be William's or Clarinda's sister
1 male 15-20 A brother of William or Clarinda?
4 boys 5-10 Jess, Newt, Frank, Lum? other children of
Martha or the other young woman?
5 boys under 5 Lum? Rob (Robert, born 1839, would have been
the youngest), John, Leonidas, Thomas?
I don't know who was the husband of Martha, but am inclined to believe
it may have been a David Cole (from
heads of households in earlier censuses--pure speculation, really).
William and Clarinda lived long enough to be counted in the 1880 census
in Polk County, Tennessee, after having
moved there with (most of? all?) their children in the mid-1850s. Every
census reports them has having been
born in North Carolina, not South Carolina. The 1880 census shows
William's father as having been born in
Maryland. All of his and Clarinda's other birthplaces were N.C.
As for their children, I find no Jacob among them. The 1850 census in
Buncombe County and later
censuses, as the children established households of their own, are
fairly easily followed, once you know they
went to Polk County, Tennessee, at least for the boys.
Here is my info on William and Clara's family:
Jesse J. Cole, b. ca. 1832, m. Annie Jane Davenport in Fannin Co., Ga.,
July 5, 1857
Newton D. Cole, b. ca. 1834, m. Malinda Susan Guinn, abt 1861, d. aft 1890
Joshua Franklin Cole, b. abt. 1837, m. Telitha Wood, October 6, 1858 in
Morganton, Fannin Co., Ga.; d. April 10, 1904
Lum (William Columbus) Cole, b. ca. 1838, d. aft. 1905
Robert Milton Cole, b. February 22, 1839, m. Nancy Celina Wood, June
1858; m,, 2nd Sarah Dunn, April 29, 1900;
d. April 28, 1924, b. Ducktown Cemetery , Ducktown, Tenn.
Martha A. Cole, b. abt. 1843
Sophrona R. Cole, b. abt. 1844
Sarah Cole, b. abt. 1846
John M. Cole, b. February 4, 1847, m. Phebe M. Gassoway, October 8,
1863, d. May 14, 1901,
b. Ducktown Cemetery, Ducktown, Tenn.
Leonidas Cole, b. abt 1849
Thomas L. Cole, b. April 18, 1848, never married; raised Laura's
children after her and her husband's deaths; d. March 23, 1905
Laura Cole, b. abt. 1852, m. David Messer
James Cole, b. abt. 1855
Robert Milton was my great-great-grandfather. He has a grandson still
living who is clear about Robert's burial
at Ducktown, although his grave was never marked. The older boys fought
in the Civil War, most for the Union.
As for Clarinda, according to Robert's death certificate, her maiden
name was Jones. She and her parents
were all born in North Carolina. She released dower rights to land she
and William sold in 1845. This tract
was sold to a Josiah Jones--possibly a relative?
I have long felt that this Cole family was long in the area. Thank you,
Katherine, for the information about
Joseph Cole. The David and Rachel you mention could be the parents of
William L., or I have suspected it--no proof.
That will be interesting to look into. Possibly they also had a son
Jacob? Another "wonder"--since one of William's
sons was Leonidas, could the initial in William's name be for
"Leonidas"? The name William has carried all
the way down to my brother.
As for sending my whole family tree, perhaps that should be offline,
especially since I don't see a connection
right now. If you think it would be of use, contact me offline.
Frances, no, I don't have a Jacob that I know of. What are the dates of
your Jacob? I wonder if it's the
same as Katherine's?
I have taken out the repeats below, though they may appear again at the end.
Thanks again. I hope some of what I've put here may help someone.

Hi, everyone!
I'm reposting an earlier post to see whether we've picked up any new
folks working on the Cole line from Buncombe County (formerly Burke), N.C.
Clara (Clarinda Jones) Cole (b. about 1814) and her husband William L. Cole (b. about 1813) held land in what is now the Leicester area of Buncombe. Clara and William had a large family and moved to the Copper Basin of north Georgia and southeast Tennesse. Would love to share information. I am searching for both their parents.
Thank you,

Oh, I forgot.? I looked at an article I have from the 5/24/1995 Canton NC Enterprise -- says 3 revolutionary war soldiers to be remembered.
One is Joseph Cole, a revolutionary war patriot, died in 1842, buried in the cemetery at Newfound Baptist Church in Leicester. Contact the Edward Buncombe Chapter, National Society , DAR and they might have more info. I have notes that say he had a son David, born 1775, who died in 1830, Rachel Thrash Cole, daughter of Valentine Thrash, born 1780 and died 1870 was David's wife.

Subject: [COLE] Cole family in Buncombe County, N.C.

Hi, everyone!
I'm reposting an earlier post to see whether we've picked up any new
folks working on the Cole line from Buncombe County (formerly Burke), N.C.
Clara (Clarinda Jones) Cole (b. about 1814) and her husband William L. Cole
(b.
about 1813) held land
in what is now the Leicester area of Buncombe. Clara and William had a
large
family and moved to the Copper Basin of north Georgia and southeast
Tennesse. Would love to share information. I am searching for both
their parents.
Thank you,
Carol

Hi - I have Cole ancestors who lived in Athens County, just north of
Meigs County from 1845 to 1849. But my ancestors left the area in
1849. Have you checked census records for Meigs county for the years
1880 to 1910?
I have info on the ancestors of my family back to 1800, if you can
find Allison's parents we might have a connection.

Has anyone out there researched the Cole family of Meigs Co., OH?
I'm specifically looking for the parents of Allison L. Cole born about
1877 probably in Meigs Co., OH. Definitely lived there in the 1910 to
1930 timeframe. He and his wife Jane/Janie/Lona had four children
Freda, Guy, Mary and Alvin.
I can't locate him with his parents in early censuses, although I see
a Lemon Cole, but I don't think he's the right one.
Any help appreciated.
Jane
I have convinced my brother, Robert
(Bob) Cole to have his DNA tested since I am female, and my DNA
wouldn't do. He has made a match with another Cole person by the
name of Rick Cole on the 12, 25, and 37 marker tests. Rick and I
have found where his most distant Cole ancestor and mine were both
from the same area of the U.S., and born around the same time era.
We have not found the common link Cole ancestor, as of yet. We are
hoping that some one out there in cyberspace will have the answer for
which we seek. Rick's most distant Cole ancestor is Lemuel H. Cole
b. 30 Apr 1788 in New Hampshire, and mine is Samuel Kimball Cole Bet.
1794 – 1795 in Londonderry, NH. We have both found possible areas
in Boxford, Mass. where they might have been. There is some
speculation that Lemuel H. & Samuel K. might either be brothers
or first cousins. There has been some speculation that perhaps an
ancestor of theirs might have been a Thomas Cole from Salem, Mass.
Thomas Cole came to the U.S. in 1632. What we need is anyone who is
a male descendant of this Thomas Cole to have their DNA tested to see
if they match us. In 1842 in Eaton County, Michigan Curtis A. Cole,
who is a descendant of Thomas Cole, was married. Lemuel H. Cole was
also living there in the same time frame. Any help or further
information on this would be very much appreciated.
