The only book I know of that Redmond Cole published was about the Coles of
Johnson Co., TN. I have a copy, but I'm not sure if it's readily available for
purchase. Here's the entry for that book from my Bibliography:
-----------------
Cole, Redmond Selecman; Mary C. Cole, ed. The Coles of Johnson County, State
of Tennessee. Tulsa, OK: By the editor, 1961–62. The title on the cover of
this paperbound book says The Story of Captain Jesse Cole of Johnson County,
Tennessee, His Ancestry and Related Families. Redmond Cole began compiling
this book, his only published major work, about a year before his death. In the
Foreword written in February 1958, he said:
“Years have been spent in contacting known descendants of Capt. Jesse Cole
[(Sampson6, Joseph5, Hugh4, Hugh3, Hugh2, James1)] to acquire essential facts
concerning this man and his descendants wherever found.... In the very nature
of things, I have had to rely in many instances, on the facts supplied by my
informants. I have, where possible, checked my data against records found in
courthouses at Elizabethton, Tenn., and Mountain City, Tenn., and in some
instances, data gathered from Federal Census records. The data used, I verily
believe, is substantially an accurate story of the families mentioned.”
After Redmond’s death on 16 July 1959, his wife Mary finished the book. She
wrote in October 1960:
“This story of Capt. Jesse Cole was the last genealogical work he was
attempting. I had been helping him arrange his material so hope I can retain enough
of his knowledge to understand his arrangement and proceed with the records
to save them from being lost, scattered, burned or buried in some hidden box.
So many members of the family have expressed interest that I feel I would be
false to his ideals, if I let the project die. So I will publish the
material I now have on hand, hoping I will not make too many errors.”
----------------------
Actually, three James Cole descendant brothers (sons of Joseph Cole and
Freelove Mason) married three Daniel Cole descendant sisters (daughters of Israel
Cole III and Remember Burgess), and they all lived in Washington Co., VA,
having come from MA via NY.
There are a number of Grindstaff's in the Jesse Cole book's index. I am
interested in contacting any descendants of Joseph and Freelove Cole.
Jim, is Abel F. Cole a descendant of James Cole of Plymouth? I couldn't
easily find him in my records.

A few years ago, a coworker from the Bristol TN area was reading a
book his mother had (History of Johnson County 1986, Sesquicentenial

significant mention of COLEs with a New England linkage. (I'm a NE

kind enough to let me review this book and I copied pages and input
much of the information. The info I found indicated that the JAMES of
Plymouth MA line and the DANIEL of Eastham MA line came together when
Sampson COLE (James1, Hugh2, Hugh3, Hugh4, Joseph5) married Kezia COLE
(Daniel1, Israel2, Israel3, Israel4). Sampson had another wife, Lydia
Wheeler, with which he sired Shady Valley TN's most famous prodigal
son, Capt. Jesse Cole.
I have this documented digitally, however this was done, a while
back, before I knew the importance of documenting sources. Some of
the info is from the aforementioned book, the E.B. Cole book on JAMES
of Plymouth, as well as from FIDO-Net BB's I was monitoring at the
time. I also have a pretty extensive GEDCOM given to me by a gent
named Albert Grindstaff, who I've subsequently lost contact with, who
is a descendant of the Capt. Jesse COLE of Shady Valley line. I can
provide either or both in GEDCOM, but as I mentioned, the 'sourcing'
is quite minimal, however, it may be useful in providing a 'pointer'
in your research.

Hi Tim,
First ,thank you for your reply. Second, I apologize for not getting back sooner.
I have corresponded with Mary Kay in the past. Although it's been a couple of years since we've been in contact. She did send me some information , but she was in the middle of a move & most of her family research was packed away. I would greatly appreciated if you could send me what she posted. I looked though my Cole file & can't find any posting to the Cole list from her, only emails that she had send to me personally.
Many thanks for your time & effort.

In 1999 there was a posting from Mary Kay (Cole) Ward mksroots(a)juno.com<mailto:mksroots@juno.com> of
Richmond, VA, about this family line. You may have already corresponded
with her since that posting was to this very same list. If you have not,
please email me and I will send you all that she posted at that time.
I corresponded with her briefly because of a mystery within my own line: An
aunt of some several generations ago wrote a letter to my ggg-grandfather,
her brother, asking him to come to Austinburg, Ashtabula County, Ohio, to be
with her in court. Her name was Cordelia D. Cole, and she must have been
living in Austinburg and contracted some legal problems which required some
assistance from her family. I have the letter; it is the only documented
evidence of her existence. I paid for some research into court records, but
none surfaced with her name. Why was she in Austinburg when the rest of her
family stayed in Norwalk? The presence of other Cole families in that area
could perhaps provide a clue, but, so far, nothing of any substance has
surfaced.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance, and good luck in your
research,
Tim Cole

I don't have a date for this obit or even the name of the paper, but I know it's related to Atoka, OK. Mary Elizabeth COLE was born in January 1877, Batesville, AR, and died at age 60, so if my math is right, I'm looking at 1937. In 1897 she married Samuel H. Thompson and moved to OK. A card of thanks in the paper is signed by Mr. and Mrs. C. W. McClendon, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Lowry, Mr. and Mrs. Hayden Thompson, Mrs. and Mrs. Arthur Thompson, Mrs. and Mrs. Howard Jones, Mr. and Mrs. John Blann, Oscar, Cliff, Esther and Mary Thompson. The obit is extremely blurry, but the best I can determine her children were: Georgia McClendon, Hayden Thompson, Bessie Lowry, Berta or Gerta Jones, Ruby (?) Blann, and Mary Thompson. I simply can't read the rest. Samuel H. Thompson is buried at Hartshorne, OK.
This Mary Elizabeth COLE Thompson is on my COLE family tree, and I'd be glad to share information with anyone interested.
Sincerely,
Gene Kathryn COLE Johnson
Hugh 2 COLE was a son of James 1 COLE and Mary TIBBES of
Plymouth, MA 1633. I believe the generation of NY COLE's that
went to the Shenandoah Valley region of VA abt 1760 ish were
down in Hugh's line and had married some COLE descendants
of Daniel of Cape Cod. I recall Judge Redmon S COLE's info
showing there were three such couples plus an extra male.
For those who have COLE's in the KY and TN counties named in
the posts on the Digest Vol 3, Issue 2, 2 Jan 2008, those counties
are located along the KY - TN state line. Through much of that
area there is a road called State Line Road. The northern side of
the road is in KY and the southern side of the road is in TN.
The counties in KY, starting at the Mississippi River and going east,
are: Fulton, Hickman (doesn't quite actually touch TN, but is
wedged in between Fulton and Graves ), and Graves.
The counties in TN, starting at the Mississippi River and going east,
are: Lake, Obion, Weakley, Henry, Benton, the Tennessee River,
and Stewart, with Carroll south of Weakley and Henry.
The states of KY and TN on the US Gen Web site have excellent
maps showing the locations of the counties.
My husband's mother's McDADE's and related families lived in most
of those counties from bef 1850 - present.
The lists for those counties are excellent. The tnweakle List is most
active and helpful. If members are unable to help, they'll point you in
the right direction. The KY lists are far less active. However, the
kyjacksonpurchase List covers all those KY counties and is more
active. tnstewart is fairly active also.
Best Wishes to my southern cousins.

I belong to New England Genealogy Historical Society. I have found a Martha Cole, born 1708 who married Oliver Mason. Martha was daughter of Ebenezer Cole born 1671 in Plymouth Ma who married Mehitable Luther. He was son of Hugh Cole who married Mary Foxwell. Hugh Cole born 1627.They married June 1st 1655. I have not sent to Ma for these records, but this might give ideas to others who are looking. I don't know if any of them went to the southern states, but I do know some of their descendants went to NY. M.E.
