Hi Wayne,
This may be your James Cole who is not traced. It is the family I am
working on. Possible? This is all I know and most of the information is from the

Does anyone happen to have information on an Edward Cole I see in the
1820 and 1830 census in Maury Co., TN? He and his family were gone
from the county by 1840 to parts unknown. He was born 1780 - 1790 if
the 1830 census is accurate and had several children.
Also, there's an Edward Cole b. abt. 1780 in NC living in Marshall
Co., TN in 1850. Other than the woman living with him, though, there
are no other Cole families around him. I don't know if this is the
same one or not.
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks.
Jane

According to "Ancestry's Red Book," Maury County, TN was formed in 1807 from Williamson County and Indian Lands; Marshall County, TN was formed in 1836 from Bedford, Lincoln and Maury Counties.
Sounds like it might be the same Edward Cole and the counties changed.. JM Fuller

I am researching a Cole family from Tennessee that showed up in Marion Co,
IL by 1840. The three brothers were born in Tennessee; Mark 1812, John 1817,
Charles 1819. I am thinking that Edward would be about the right age to be
their father. Charles's wife was from Maury County. I just have not been
able to make a definite connection.

Hi Dona,
This Edward in Maury/Marshall County is of special interest to me not
only because he was so close in proximity to Giles County, but also
because he was born in NC which was where my Coles originated. My
Thomas D. Cole was born 1784-1790 in Burke Co., NC to Alexander Cole.
Alexander Cole in turn was the son of William and Rachel Cole of
(then) Craven Co. SC who have come from Ireland to Orange Co. Virginia
in 1740.
Also, the Edward Cole I see in Giles County had a middle initial of
"W." The record below is the only record I've ever seen him
mentioned in, and I've scoured all records from top to bottom. I had
always assumed that maybe he was young when he helped survey this
land, and then left the county when he came of age. It hadn't
occured to me that this Edward could have been a visiting relative
helping do a survey until I saw the Edward Cole in Maury County.
233 - For E. J. SHIELDS, assignee of John WALL, Entry 235, 36 5/8 A in
Rng. on waters of Pigeon Roost of Richland Creek, Sec. 1, Rng. 4, C.D.
12. Adj. William WOOD; Daniel PURYEAR; John PHILLIPS; Alex BLACK.
Surv. 2 Sep 1845. David A. COLE & Edward W. COLE, C.C
For what it's worth, I've had my Cole line DNA tested, so the results
are available for matching. We've already matched a Cole
descendant of a brother of Alexander's, so we have high confidence
that it is a good baseline.

Your information is very interesting. I have often felt that the Cole line
would lead back through North Carolina. Just indications that I could not
validate. I will need to go back through some of my research notes.
I did find that the Edward in Marion Co, IL is listed as born in Kentucky.
He does seem to be associated with the Cole line that I have been
researching. There is also a Thomas Cole (b. TN) with a son Eldridge that shows up near
my Cole line as they moved on to the border counties of Texas.
It might be interesting to have my husband do the DNA testing. At least I
could point myself in a direction.
Thanks for sharing

Hello,
I hope you all don't mind me getting into this discussion, but I have been
searching for my ggrandfather, Robert Nathaniel Cole who was born in 1859
in either KY or TN. As your discussion mentions NC, TN, and IL this
matches with oral history that I have been able to obtain from various
family members. Otherwise, I have no other leads that I have found in ten
years of searching. My only lead is that my grandfather was born to Robert
Nathaniel Cole and Josie F. Clemm in Cooke County, TX in 1892. If anyone
has this cole family in their records I would greatly appreciate hearing
from you.
Thanks again,
Brenda von Tungeln
