Obituary for Roberta Ray Cole
Dallas Morning News p8B, Saturday Nov. 24, 2007
Roberta Ray Cole, affectionately known to all as Mim, peacefully passed away on November 20, 2007 in the home she lived in for the past 70 years. Born in Dallas on March 11, 1904 to Mary Belle Seay and Erastus Hugh Ray, Mim’s life journey was one of exceptional longevity, health, dignity and good will. Mim was a third generation Dallasite, life-long resident of Dallas, and a graduate of Randolph Macon College. A role model and inspiration to all who knew her, Mim focused every day of her life on making things better for others. Her dedication to volunteer efforts spanned a century and benefited many. Even in advanced age her devotion to community service remained strong: by her late 90’s she was the longest serving volunteer at Baylor Hospital (43 years), and she volunteered weekly at Highland Park United Methodist Church into her 103 year. Over the years she was an active member of many organizations, including the Highland Park PTA, Highland Park Presbyterian Chu!
rch, Highland Park United Methodist Church, Dallas Woman’s Club, Marianne Scruggs Garden Club, Lyceum Club, Craig Class, Ferndale Club, Dallas Count Club, Junior League of Dallas, Quest Club, her Wednesday afternoon card group, and several Bible study groups. Maintaining a family tradition that dated back to her own childhood, she continued to host Sunday dinner well into her final year. Mim loved her family and friends deeply and leaves us all with the wonderful gift, by example, of how to live a live full of grace and meaning.
Mim is preceded in death by her son George O. Wilson, her husbands George Wilson and Chester Cole, and numerous relatives and friends. She is survived by her daughter Roberta “Honey” Wilson Bracken and husband Bill, her son Georges’ wife Marcia Wilson, grandchildren Worth Bracken, Jill Wilson Smith and husband Bragg, Bob Bracken, Winston Smith and husband Bragg. Bob Bracken, Winston Bracken, Jenny Wilson Salter and husband Jim Bob, and Libby Wilson, great grandchildren Hannah Bracken, Samantha Smith, Bragg Smith, Anna Grace Salter, and Durham Salter, step-grandchildren Malinda Johnson, Michele Branyan, Marlene Baker and their families, and her dear friend Reverent Bill Smith.
The family would like to give special thanks to everyone who provided her with such wonder care and to the Shoemaker family for being such wonderful friends and neighbors. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM at Highland Park United Methodist Church on Monday, November 26. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
In response to Susan of Massachusetts question:
Do you know where in Ontario your Samuel settled with his family?
-----
Yes Susan, I do. My Great Grandfather, Wilson Taylor Cole wrote a partial genealogy for his Grandfather Samuel Cole and family in 1921. It is a very enlightening genealogy with personal descriptions of every one of the Coles that departed Devon for Canada. According to Wilson Taylor ...and transcribed exactly as he wrote it.....
"The entire family along with a sister of Grandmother, Mrs. Hayden, emigrated to America in 1843, and settled about a mile east of Yarmouth Center, in Elgin County, Ontario.
There they made their first American home, and their first house was of clay and straw, known as a "mud house". It was probably not more than 18 X 20 feet, one story, without basement. It had only two or three very small windows, something like four lights of 6 X 9 inches. At my earliest recollection, it had been discarded as a dwelling and was used, I think, for sheep.
Those were the days of tallow candles, and when a shortage occurred, of the "dip" or "booby". This consisted of a wick placed in a shallow vessel containing melted tallow, with the end to be extended over the edge. As the wick burned, it was pulled up and the charred end cut off, similar to "snuffing" a candle. Had the vessel been of proper shape, the conventional lamp of knowledge would have been complete."

It appears there were a lot of Englishmen named Samuel Cole from Devon England during our families time era.
Our 3rd Great Grandfather was born and married in Holsworthy, Devon, England. Samuel Cole b. 1794 d. 1885 married in 1822 to Maria(h) Taylor. They and their children emigrated from Holsworthy, Devon between 1841-1843 to Ontario Canada.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who hails from the same line. We know that Samuel and Mariah had 6 sons and 6 daughters that married spouses from the Badge, Braddon, Forester, Gloin, Crane, Clark, Couse, Morrish, Summers, Henderson, and Smith families.
Looking forward to meeting family and exchanging information.

"In other words, would I have any chance of establishing a DNA link
with my great-grandfather, Cornelius Cole, via his daughter and
granddaughter (i.e. my grandmother and mother)?"
Charles,
The quick answer to your question is "no."
Your Y-DNA could be used to establish a connection on your Garrick
line, and your mtDNA could be used to establish a connection straight
up your maternal line. The latter can only take place under special
circumstances which I won't go into right now.
If you were trying to use DNA to help with a Cole brick wall, you
would have to back to at least your grandmother's generation and find
a descendant of a brother of hers that still carries the Cole name to
be tested. I actually had a fourth cousin tested for the Cole
project, so I had to go back several generations to find a qualified
donor.

Charles,
No you would need a male from the Cole line to do the DNA test. Fathers and sons carry the same DNA. When their is a daughter she carries her mothers and various grandmother's DNA.
So you would need to find a Cole from your grandfather's line --like his brother, nephew, or cousin to do the DNA test.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck.

I'm interested in any DNA testing that will indicate any relatives at all.
By the way, I was re-reading "Emma" by Jane Austen. There is a Cole
family (fictitious of course) that are characters in the novel. They
made a lot of money (new money) in transportation in the story but they
didn't have the correct ancestry in order to fit in. But since they had
money and could put on a wonderful ball, they were tolerated and allowed
to associate with the families with better pedigrees. A familiar theme
in the novels of the time.
I have an ancestor, Charles Cole, who was a wagon master or maker in the
early 1800s in Virginia. One of his wives was Elizabeth Haga
(Norwegian). Anyone know about this family?

My Coles come down to the King line (Paternal Grandmother) through two women
who married the men who eventually had a daughter who married a King. It
would be to much of a stretch to even consider the DNA test if fear.

Haskins April 1781.
Hopestill Haskins
William Hoskins married Mary Cole
Mary Cole
John Cole married Mary Cole (LDS has Mrs. Mary Cole) which is incorrect
since the two were both COLE by surname of two different lines I don't or

me? The two Cole lines met up in Massachusetts and one I believe John was

Daniel,
I have COLEs from New England who are tested for DNA. This could help
with your research. You may have matches to your COLE line already in the
project. If not, it is great to get new people to be tested to see if you have
a common ancestor with them or to show they are not related to your line.

Calling all Cole Y-DNA Participants!
Please join the Cole Y-DNA mailing list so we can start communicating
with each other. I had no idea there were over 80 people in the
project! There are things participants can do to make the project
better and more informative.

Folks some kind person on this list helped me a year or so ago with
straightening out my Cole line in Massachusetts (well New England)
My line in Massachusetts is:
Amos King of New Salem, Hamshire County, MA born 1756 married Hopestill
Haskins April 1781.
Hopestill Haskins
William Hoskins married Mary Cole
Mary Cole
John Cole married Mary Cole (LDS has Mrs. Mary Cole) which is incorrect
since the two were both COLE by surname of two different lines I don't or
cannot find where I saved the line in my old computer. Can anyone help
me? The two Cole lines met up in Massachusetts and one I believe John was
from Rhode Island and before that possibly Plymouth.
Daniel
Paternal 4th great grandson of Amos King
