I am searching for the family of William Cole. William went to the war and
sent his 7 year old son (John Thomas Cole) to Rock Island County, IL. John
Thomas Cole was born in Quaker City, Guernsey County, Ohio, in 1854 to William
and Martha (Margarate) Johnson Cole. William disappeared in 1861. Possibly
he died in the war.
Looking for ties to William Cole. John Thomas Cole is my great-grandfather.
Denise Cole
At this time I know nothing about William or Clarinda's parents or
siblings. Any Jesse in this family born about 1814 would probably be a
brother to William. William and Clarinda named their first child Jesse,
so I feel it's very possible that some close relative was named Jesse.
Their son, Jesse J. Cole, was born about 1834. The family story was
that "Jess, Newt, Rob and Lum" migrated into the Copper Basin area not
too long before the Civil War. Do you have a Jesse born about 1814? Do
you know other family members? I don't know William's parents yet, but
have speculated that his father died rather early, leaving his wife
Martha Cole a widow with a young family, William among them.
Here are my notes concerning this:
I have not been able to locate William Cole in 1840. All censuses say
he and Clarinda were both born in N.C. There is no indication of where
in N.C., but if the assumption is made that they were from Buncombe
County, there are two William Cole's listed as heads of family in 1840.
Closer examination, however, shows that the head of household in one
case was about ten years too old to be our William L. Cole. There were
many people of different ages in that household also, rather than a
cluster of young boys and there were no boys under ten. The other
William Cole is in the right age bracket but the boys are spread out
across age brackets again. There are also girls in both families,
whereas William and Clarinda had no girls in the same age bracket as the
early boys--at least none that lived.
That leaves houses with women heads of household. Sarah and Hannah Cole
are both quite elderly and have few younger people in their homes. But
the woman named Martha is possibly the mother of William with William
and his family living with her.
Here is the household lineup:
Martha Cole 50-60 a reasonable age to have a 27-year-old son
1 male 20-30 William should be about 24-27
2 women 20-30 One of these could be Clarinda; another could
be William's or Clarinda's sister
1 male 15-20 A brother of William or Clarinda?
4 boys 5-10 Jess, Newt, Frank, Lum? other children of
Martha or the other young woman?
5 boys under 5 Lum? Rob (Robert, born 1839, would have been
the youngest) John, Leonidas, Thomas
This may be more than you wanted to know!

Hi, I'll do some research in my files. My
Coles also came from NY and then went to Ohio. I'd
love to find some cousins, also some new leads. It
takes so long to get anything done.

Please visit my home page at www.burningskyenterprises.com, click on "Family Album". Researching families Brumbelow, Carsten, Leitch, Manes, Patterson, Stiffler, Thomas, Tye & more than I have fingers, toes, earrings & nose holes for!
Is there anyone researching this Cole line? They held land in what is
now the Leicester area of Buncombe. Clara and William had a large
family and moved to the Copper Basin of north Georgia and southeast
Tennesse. Would love to share information. I am searching for both
their parents.
Thank you,
Carol

No, I don't. I know my gr gr grandfather lived there
and practiced medicine, but we, my family, and I
always thought he only had one son, Winfield Scott
Cole b/kosiusko Co., Indiana but he is buries by a
son and I think a daughter. THen we have found some
old pictures but can't identify them. The person to
contact is Marge Priser in Koskusko Co. Historical
Society, she is wonderful, she not only found him, her
husband takes care of the old graveyard where he is
buried, Clunette Cemetery. Good luck. Kay

Dear Pam,
I was wondering if you studies on Coles include any from Elisabeth Town
around 1799/1800.
Have a family of Coles from Jefferson Township, Clayton, New York in the
1800s
Alfred M. Cole - son of Ransom Cole (civil war victim) - son of Nicholas
Cole, born in Elisabethtown - cannot find the Father of Nicholas, very
frustrating.
Any leads on reference books useful from this era would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Donna Cole
Several of us have been searching for over 20 years for the parentage of our
Samuel L. Cole born c. 1790 in NC.
He married Elizabeth Holcomb before 1820. They were in TN at that time, but
we cannot find him again until 1860 when he appears on the census with his
son John James Cole in Carroll Co. TN, with wife Elizabeth and son Joseph
Benjamin and perhaps daughter Martha. I haven't looked at my notes. In
1870 they were in Hickman County KY, living next to son Robert Cumberland
Cole and Joseph Benjamin Cole and his first wife.
Right now for all we know about his parentage we could just as well say he
crawled from under a log.
I feel he may have been a son of a James, since his first child was named
John James. Nothing concrete to go on.
If you should have anything in your files, it would be most wonderful.
Thanks
Oleen
