Would this TAG article have any mention of John Cole & Elizabeth Rider
(Ryder)'s children? The court records that I have found only mention four
children, but do not name them. I am trying to prove that the Nathaniel
Cole who married Elizabeth Eddy is the son of John & Elizabeth.

The Mrs. Mary Cole who has been incorrectly connect to John2 Cole (James1
Cole) is not a real person! Gene Zubrinsky clearly states that case as being a
clerical error, an error I was not even aware of until Gene pointed it out
because I had never seen the estate inventory records.
The Mary Cole who m. William Hoskins is probably not a James Cole
descendant--I find no Hoskins/Haskins at all in the early James Cole generations, nor
any John/Mary Cole marriages that would fit.
The William Hoskins/Mary Cole family appears in a number of Family Trees on
RootsWeb. One of these, posted by Angela Porter, shows Mary Cole's line of
descent from John Cole and Susannah Hutchinson. E.B. Cole, p. 324, shows this
couple under "The Boston Family" as a separate line from James Cole of
Plymouth. Whether any of this is true I don't know because I'm not researching that
line!

Pam Thompson, Your name has come up in straightening out this conundrum of
sorts. If you get this message we are trying to find out just who Mrs.
Mary Cole referred to as the wife of John Cole. Their daughter Mary is
the mother of my fourth great grandfathers wife Hopestill Haskins.
Hopestill Haskins married Amos Nahum King in 1781 at New Salem, Hampshire
County, Massachusetts. Her father is William Hoskins whose line of
Hoskins came by way of Ireland from England. I am comfortable with the
Hoskins line but this Cole family has me going !@#$!WQ#$! if you get my
drift. Can you help?

Colleen,
The name Electa rang a bell. Not many children have been given that name. Also Cattaraugus County. If you will send me an e-mail direct, I will attach a file showing the family of Truman Cole through two generations. That's as far as my source, "The Early Genealogies of the Cole Families in America" takes me. Your Alvah is missing but it may indicate a place to look. Or, if you can find a copy of the referenced book at your library, you will find the same information. The time frame is close but not a match. The Electas would have to have been cousins or in separate generations.

Is there anyone named Alvah, or Alva, Cole in this book? He was married first to Annie Lamphere or Lamphear, and second to Rosamond Freeman. Alvah was born on Dec 5, 1774. He died Oct 24, 1846. Alvah and Rosamond were married Jan 8, 1804.
He was first married to Annie Lanphear (m. Nov 27, 1800 Wilbraham, Hampden Cty MA). Annie died May 5, 1803. She and Alvah had one child, Jerusha. After Annie's death, Alvah married Rosamond, from whom I descend. Alvah and Rosamond are both buried in the old Prairie Township, IL cemetery.
Here are the children of Alvah and Rosamond (they were all born in Cattaragus Cty, NY):
Elvira, b. May 14 1805
Joel Dickerson, b. May 17 1807 (married Sarah Elizabeth Michales)
Alva, b. Feb 9, 1809
Electa, b. Oct 16, 1811
Clarrissa, b. Aug 31, 1813
Ruby, b. Oct 16, 1816
Samuel, b. Feb 2, 1818
Peter Burr, b. May 24, 1821
Stephen Freeman, b. May 27, 1824
Mary, b. June 24, 1827
Aldalia, b. June 20, 1830
The parents of Alvah Cole are unknown. Research is still being done. So far it has been a dead end, but I have not given up hope. Somewhere the answers are waiting to be found.

The subject is son of the immigrant James Cole of Plymouth and
brother to my ancestor, Hugh Cole. The author shows that John had
but one wife, Elizabeth Rider/Ryder; that she outlived John; and that
the inventory at his death stating that his wife was Mary must have
been a clerical error.

Correction to what I wrote earlier - it's Plymouth and Swansea MA,
not Portsmouth and Swansea:

Ed, I deleted the message on the Cole family from this reply. What I
really need is how the Rhode Island Cole family connects to the Plymouth
Cole line. I don't know how reliable what I have really is. So here is
what I have.
My fourth great grandfather Amos Nahum King born 1756 in New Salem,
Hampshire (now Franklin) County. As a Revolutionary War Veteran married
Hopestill Haskins a daughter of William Hoskins and Mary Cole in 1781. By
my count there were 13 children most of them using the "A" rather that the
"O" in their surname. By the time I caught up with this family they were
already in Columbia County, New York. Someone used the parents of Mary
Cole Hoskins as John Cole and Mrs. Mary Cole. Whoever has been working on
this line previous to my coming on the scene liberally takes the Rhode
Island Cole line and mixes in the Plymouth Cole line. Can you help me
straighten this line out without using the records everyone seems to be
using from familysearch.org. I cannot put to much faith in those records
because I don't see where they have used sources for the theories.
Someone that I have been trading info with said it was possible that they
mixed them in and of the lines to gain notoriety for the Mayflower Coles.
Thanks
