I don't know who you are referring to mine were from Lincoln County, TN
starting with James D. COLE who married Eglantine "Tiny" LEFTWICH. They are
on the 1820 Census in Lincoln County TN. James was a blind preacher with the
Concord Primitive Baptist Church there.

The query below and some earlier info prompted me to do some research on
this family. If we haven't communicated before, I am revising and updating the
1908 book, The Descendants of James Cole of Plymouth.
Here's what I know about the families you are interested in, specifically
the 10th child and 2 possible brothers who might be missing from this list:
SAMUEL COLE7 (Sampson6, Joseph5, Hugh4, Hugh3, Hugh2, James1) married Mary
Brown. Here is my current list of Samuel and Mary's children:
i. Susannah Cole, b. 17 Oct 1799; d. 1800.
ii. Sampson Cole, b. 8 July 1801 in Carter Co., TN
iii. Celia Cole, b. 19 Oct 1803 in Carter Co., TN
iv. William Cole, b. 5 Aug 1805 in Cumberland Co., KY
v. James Cole, b. 16 Oct 1807 in Cumberland Co., KY.
vi. Benjamin Brown Cole, b. 17 June 1809 in Cumberland Co., KY
vii. John Cole, b. 9 Jan 1812 in Cumberland Co., KY
viii. Hugh Cole, b. 31 Oct 1814 in Cumberland Co., KY
ix. Nancy Cole, b. 24 Oct 1816 in Cumberland Co., KY
x. David Cole, b. 22 Apr 1823 in TN
Source, except as cited: Belden Ray Cole, Twigs of James Cole—Plymouth;
Daniel Cole—Eastham; Stephen Hopkins—Mayflower (Amarillo, TX: n. pub., 1962),
pp. 4–5, 33; birthdates for Sampson, Benjamin, John, Nancy, and David are also
listed in H.C. Bradsby, ed., History of Bureau County, Illinois (Chicago:
World Publishing Co., 1885), p. 486.
I have further info on all these children but James.
Descendant Sylvia Ragland said in a 3/3/05 post to the Cole Message Board on
GenForum that her cousin told her that "David migrated from Tenn. and
Kentucky to Arkansas along with brothers Andrew Jackson Cole, and Doc Samuel Cole."
David, the 10th child, is the connection to the previous generations. If
Andrew and Samuel are David's brothers, Belden Ray Cole missed them entirely in
his research!
As you can see, there is a gap in the years between the births of Nancy and
David. A Samuel Cole, b. about 1821 in TN, and an Andrew Jackson Cole, b.
about 1819 in TN, appear on censuses near each other and David. Based on their
ages, birthplaces, and proximity of the families on the censuses, it is
possible that Samuel Cole and Andrew Jackson Cole were brothers of David. David
was apparently the only child of Samuel from the list above to live in Searcy
Co., AR. I found no other close relatives (cousins, etc.) in Searcy Co.
Here's where the families of these 3 men were in 1850-1870:
1850
Joplin Co., MO - David
Richland, Searcy Co., AR - Samuel
Bear Creek, Searcy Co., AR - Andrew
1860
Richland, Searcy Co., AR - Samuel
Richland, Searcy Co., AR - Andrew
Cove, Searcy Co., AR - David
1870 (listed and indexed as Coal in Searcy Co.)
Clay Co., IL - David
Richland, Searcy Co., AR - Samuel
Richland, Searcy Co., AR - Andrew's widow "Sarah B.L. Coal" and children
Unfortunately, I have no wills for Samuel, who d. in 1824 in AR, or his wife
Mary, who d. in 1850 in Burleson Co., TX. If anyone has access to them, one
or both of these wills might prove this connection.
Interesting note: Of Samuel’s 8 known children who lived to adulthood and
married, 4 married children of William and Elizabeth (Owens) Tompkins: Sampson,
Celia, Benjamin, and John.
I'd like to know your thoughts, and any further info you may have, on the
possibility that Samuel and Andrew are sons of Samuel Cole and Mary Brown.

Greg is a Research Professor (Alzheimers) in the UCLA Medical School,
California. My daughter, Virginia has a Masters Degree in Wine Making and
works for Gallo in Modesto, California. My wife, Barbara, is a Skilled

Who was Samuel Kimball Cole?
Article
After many years of research, using census records, Mormon records, Cole
Genealogies & Kimball Family History, I believe I am descended from (see early
genealogy of Cole Families in America), Thomas1 Cole who settled in Salem, MA
in 1649, through Daniel5 a soldier in the Revolutionary Army who resided in
Boxford, MA, and Samuel Kimball Cole who was born about 1795. No record of
his birth has been found, but there were two boys in the 0-10year old category
in the Moses6 household in the 1800 census for Boxford, MA. Moses was
unmarried at that time, so Samuel Kimball Cole must be the son of one of
Moses unmarried sisters6. I could find no m. record for Sally b. 1774 or
Pfebe b. 1779.
The Kimball family history says Sally Kimball m. (1) Thomas Cole and (2) Moses
Cole. Both were sons of Daniel5. The m. to Thomas was in Boxford, MA on
1/11/1798. Thomas and Sally had only one child, a daughter named Mary.
Thomas died soon after probably in New Hampshire. Moses then m. his brothers
widow also in NH where he spent most of the rest of his life.
The story of Samuel Kimball Cole is almost unbelievable. There is no known
record of his birth, his war of 1812 records are amazing and his tombstone has
the wrong name on it. At the time of his death in 1876 at the age of 81, he
was living with his son, Sebastian in Adams County, IA. Due to a mistake in
the cemetery records, his tombstone in Quincy Cemetery reads Sebastian Cole,
Soldier, war of 1812.
I found his military records in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. (see
attachment). He enlisted in Concord, NH 2/14/1814. He was 21 years old, 5
10 tall, fair skin, blue eyes and brown hair, a good description of me at
that age. His occupation was
Farmer or Gunsmith. He gave his birthplace as Londonderry, NH, but the census
of his children says he was b. in MA. I found no record of Cole Families in
the history of Londonderry, NH. Moses6 lived in several locations in NH, and
may have been in Londonderry for a short time between census records. He was
stationed in Maine to protect against an invasion from Canada by the British.
He deserted 1/20/1815, was captured, Court Marshaled in Boston and sentenced
to be shot to death for desertion in war time. Before this sentence was
carried out, a ship arrived with the news that the Treaty of Ghent ending the
war was signed on 12/24/1814, which was before he deserted, so the sentence
was remanded. He was discharged 4/10/1815.
After the war he settled in Schoharie County, NY, where he went by the name of
Kimball Cole. He m. Mary Millias, a woman of German descent in 1820. She had
a brother named Sebastian. Their children were Permelia Ann, Mary Olive,
Benjamin, Andrus, Ann (m. James Persons), Sebastian, Andrew Jackson, Peter,
and Sarah. His application for Veterans pension of $8.00 a month was signed
by his sons, Sebastian and Andrew Jackson Cole.
I went to Schoharie County, NY in 1982 to see Valera Cole who is descended
from Andrus Cole and to see Cole Hollow (see attached map). I obtained
Valeras name by writing to the Historian of Schoharie County, New York. We
had corresponded for several years; she was 77 years old at that time. She
had heard we were descended from William Cole, who lived in Devonshire,
England in 1243. I have not researched ancestors in England. Cole Hollow is
near the top of a heavily forested small mountain. Only the foundations of
their small log cabins remain. I was told they were very poor and that in the
summer they worked as farm hands on the fertile valley below. They had a few
farm animals and a garden. The women made their clothes by spinning, weaving
and sewing. In the winter, the men chopped down trees and made hand hewed
wood shakes for roofs. Tuberculosis caused many deaths. I purchased a
copy of Through Povertys Vale a book written by Henry Conklin, and
published by Syracuse University Press in 1974. He lived in Cole Hollow when
it was called Darling Hollow. He describes what life was like for poor people
in the mountains of Upstate NY at that
time. He also describes his civil war service where he was wounded in combat.
Sebastian was b. in NY State in 1825. He m. my great grandmother, Mary Olive
Rodman in NY State. She d. 5/30/1860 in Jackson County or Clinton County,
IA. Their children were Permelia Ann, Mary Olive, John (no children), Joel
(my grandfather), George and Amanda. Sebastian later m. Serepta Leach
4/27/1861. Permelia and Mary remained in eastern IA. Sebastian and Serepta
moved to Adams County, IA about 1871 and to Osborne County, KS in 1879. He d.
there in 1904. John moved to Portland, OR. The other adult children remained
in Adams County, IA.
Finally, for my own descendants, we are descended from Samuel7 Kimball Cole,
Sebastian8, Joel Sebastian9, and my father, Harry Cole10. Joel Sebastian9 b.
1853 m. Charlotte Virginia Palmer in 1877. He d. in 1931 at the age of 78.
She was b. in Geneva, Henry County, IL August 16, 1858. Her parents, Abel and
June Palmer immigrated from Somersetshire, England in 1857. She d. in 1949 in
Adams County, IA just before her 92nd birthday. All of us who knew her
remember her as a delightful white haired old lady, always calm and pleasant.
Her children all treated her with the deepest respect that Ive ever known for
children to have for a parent.
My father, Harry Cole10 was b. February 14, 1889 in Adams County, IA. He m.
Bessie Fletcher March 29, 1916 in Cass County, IA. He d. January 8, 1966 just
before his 77th birthday. She was b. May 3, 1897 in Cass County, IA and d.
May 24, 1983 at the age of 86 in Tustin, Orange County, CA.

migrated to NY
William COLE born 8/30/1793
Alse COLE born 5/6/1796
Oliver COLE born 9/27/1798
Someone out there must be doing genealogy on any of the above.
Someone out there must have this information. They were either married in
CT or in MASS or even possibly in New York.
Hulda COLE is the daughter of James COLE, Sr. who married Ellis HARSKINS
(this is how it is spelled in ancestry.com); might me Ellie, Elsie, HARKINS,
HASKINS. was there a misspelling when this was put in Ancestry.com.
Hulda COLE, I believe, was born in New Ashford, Berkshire County, MASS.
However one of her older siblings was born on July 1, 1784 in Rehoboth, Bristol
County, MASS. But the 1790 census does indicate a James COLE in New Ashford,
Berkshire County, MASS>
Does anyone have any books to look in?
I notice that there are many books for the parents of James COLE, Sr. such
as James N. Arnold's Vital Records of Rehoboth, MASS.
Please and thank you.
Judy (in Florida)
Looking for proof of parents of John Joseph Cole. The most likely candidate
I found, a John Cole, Sr living in Buncombe Co. NC in 1840 with 3 boys under
5, himself 40-50, 2 girls 5-10, 1 girl 10-15, and wife 40-50. Also in the
same county was John Cole [Jr?] with 2 boys under 5, himself, 20-30, 1 girl
10-15 and wife 30-40. The younger John could fit as John Joseph Cole 1804,
but I have nothing to back up this assumption.
Is anyone researching this family in North Carolina? John Joseph Cole was
counted in the 1850 census of Haywood Co. TN. I have followed the family
through the later census years and would like to move backward into earlier
generations.
Any help appreciated.
Janie

CAROLINE b 1842 1850c as 7 years old same
LUTHER b 1845 5 years old same
JAMES b 1849 1 year old same
CHARLES b 1850 1860c 10 years old same
HARRIET b 1852 1860c 8 years old same
SARAH b 1855 1860c 5 years old same
JOSIAH b 1856 1860c 4 years old same
JOSIAH COLE is not listed in the 1860 census. I am just presuming that Josiah Cole died sometime between 1856-1860 in
Wayne's County, Pa.
Does anyone have any of these in there line.
Thanks.............Bertha Ann
Judy,
JOHN COLE4 (John3, Hugh2, James1) who was b. 3 Nov 1695 in Swansea, MA,
[VRS, p. 11], m. in Swansea on 1 Nov 1715 to Abigail Butts [VRS, p. 182—John
listed as “John Cole Ju”].
The John Cole who m. Susanna Gray is also a descendant of James Cole of
Plymouth, but he’s not the one you’re looking for: JOHN COLE3 (James2, James1)
b. 16 March 1660 in Plymouth, MA; m. Susanna Gray, who was b. 15 Oct 1668, the
daughter of Edward and Dorothy (Lettice) Gray [PCR 8:32].
To confuse matters further, there is one more John Cole, son of John Cole
and Susanna Gray:
JOHN COLE4 (John3, James2, James1) baptized in 1692 in Plymouth [Plymouth
Church Records, Vol. I, p. 274—listed as son of Susanna Cole]. Either John or
his brother James was probably b. about 1688, the year in which his parents
were fined for pre-marital sex [Stratton, p. 195], which would have become
evident with Susanna’s pregnancy. John m. in Bridgewater to Patience Barber on 10
Jan 1709 [VRP, pp. 248, 292—the record was registered in Plympton because
John was a resident of Plympton] / 27 Jan 1709/10 (old calendar dating) [VRB,
Vol. II, pp. 38, 86].
I was unable to identify the parents of the John Cole who m. Mercy Perry on
25 Oct 1722 in Swansea [VRS, p. 183]. In VRS, Mercy Perry is only listed
once, for her marriage record.

Subject: John COLE b 3 Nov 1695 md Mercy PERRY ? son of John CALL/Susanna
GRAY
Been researching Hulda COLE born June 5, 1791; have found her siblings and
probably her parents and further back parentage. Am also trying to locate
her
husband Roswell W. BURTON's parentage in the process. Would be nice to
know
how they met, she being from New Ashford, MASS, Roswell possibly being from
Litchfield County, CT (or ? RI although census records indicated his being
born
in RI; Rhode Island research has ruled this out).
I hope to be in touch with those who are related to the siblings of Hulda
COLE or her ancestry.
Our ancestry is thus:
John COLE married Mercy PERRY Swansea, Bristol County, MASS
Aaron COLE married Hulda BUTTERWORTH Rehoboth, Bristol County, MASS
James COLE, Sr. married Ellis HARSKINS (or HARKINS or HASKINS or first
name??)
Hulda COLE married Roswell W. BURTON. New Ashford, Berkshire County, MASS
Has not been proved, however, is a possibility that John COLE's parents
were:
John COLE married to Susanna GRAY
Hugh COLE married to Mary FOXWELL
James COLE married to Mary TIBBES
this James COLE was born before 1600 in England
Would like to be in touch with anyone working on this family tree; there
must be others out there wondering about their COLE family.
More information I will provide in future on this web site.
