I've "rescued" a group of three photographs which all belong to the FOSTER
Family of Indiana. The first is a photograph of Martha FOSTER CRUBAUGH and
Mary FOSTER COLE which was taken at the M.H. Watts Studio in Richmond,
Indiana. The second surnames appear to have been added to later using a
different pen so I'm assuming that those are the girls married names.
The first photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with the two
girls looking to be in their early to late teens at the time. The second
photograph has no studio or location noted but appears to be another
photograph of the girl identified as Mary FOSTER COLE. This photograph
appears to have been taken in the 1890's with Mary looking to be slightly
older than the previous photograph, maybe 15 years of age.
The third photograph is one of Mary FOSTER COLE, taken at the Watt Studio in
Richmond, IN, probably in the early 1900's with Mary likely in her 20's at
the time. I'm hoping to locate someone from this FOSTER Family so that
these wonderful old photographs can be returned to the care of family.
These photographs were recovered along with another photograph from
Richmond, IN belonging to the PORTERFIELD - BURBAGE Family. I've no idea
what the connection might be, however, the handwriting on all the
photographs is clearly made by the same hand. If you are a member of this
family or know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley

In the book Men of Tomorrow, Jack Cole, born 1914 in New Castle, PA was mentioned. He was described as the son of a "dry goods dealer, musician, and Methodist Sunday Schol teacher."
The book by Gerard Jones talks about the birth and early years of the comics. Jack was responsible for the character known as Plastic Man. Jack was reported to have suffered with depression throughout his life and died of suicide perhaps around the late 1930's.
There was more information about his growing up and his drawing. I have no connection that I know of regarding this Jack Cole and am not the source of information about him. If you can't get hold of the book I will abstract more information from it for people who are interested. I know nothing more about him!!! The book gives no more information about his origins. If you can't connect to him from what I have written above, I can't tell you more.

I was wondering if anyone out there might be working on the same Cole line
as me as I can't seem to find anything else on this line. My grandmother was
Ellen Cole, born 15 Aug 1889 or 1899 and died 5 Sept 1948 in Blount county,
Tennessee. She is buried at Holsten College cemetery in Maryville. She was
married to Dean Ledford. My greatgrandfather was Nelson Cole who was born 1864
in Tennessee and is also buried at Holsten College cemetery. His wife was
Margarret Unknown. She was born in 1865. The 1880 Census shows Nelson living
with his Uncle John in Jones Cove, Sevier county, Tennessee. If anyone can
help, please let me know.

Please help us to Keep South Dakota researchable................
Hearing on Bill 41 will be held on Monday, January 24th , 2005 in committee at the State Capitol Building.
Phyllis Knutson plans on driving up Monday morning if anyone wishes to drive up with her.
Suggest that all of you who have not e-mailed Tom Dempster, do so before the hearing. As a reminder, the following is the letter sent out previously.
Senate Bill 41, proposed by the Department of Health, has just been introduced into the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services. This bill would eliminate access to South Dakota death, marriage, divorce, dissolution of marriage, and annulment records until 50 years have elapsed from the date of occurrence. Currently, access is easy at the county level to these public records. (Birth records access was restricted a few years ago by the legislature to 100 years after the occurrence.)
We can all agree that state government officials should have public hearings or make an effort to conduct discussions with a broad range of citizens who will be impacted by new regulations and laws before bills are introduced in the legislature. In this case, no effort has been made by health department staff to seek Sioux Valley Genealogical Society members opinions and concerns about the ramifications of the proposed restrictions on genealogical research. Nor has any effort been made to gather information from groups of genealogists around the state that would help in crafting a reasonable bill that will protect the citizenry without needlessly limiting genealogical research capabilities.
If it is truly necessary to place these extreme limitations on records access, it would be easy for Health Department staff to explain this in a meeting with those of us seriously impeded by this action. If it is not
necessary for the restrictions to be so stringent, then the law should be less restrictive. A little time to educate each other about our needs would be useful in crafting good legislation.
If you would like to help stop this bill until the Health Department sets up the necessary public meetings to hear the concerns of genealogists and other members of the public, please log onto the SD state legislature site, http://legis.state.sd.us/index.cfm, go to Current session, Members, find Tom Dempster (chairman of the committee), click on his name, and either phone him or e-mail him, asking that this bill be tabled until citizen input is sought. Or check the list of members of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, available at the website, and e-mail or phone them.
You will find a copy of the bill (SB 41) at the website as well. There are some features that would be beneficial to genealogists. And the Health Department website has a new area for genealogy research. Check it out so your comments will not be entirely negative when you contact your legislator.
Contact members of the committee immediately, as Senate Bill 41 will be heard in the committee very soon.
Sincerely,
For the Board

Hi,
I am looking for any information on William Cole of Baltimore Md. I
believe he married Martha E. Nevel widow of John William Neville who
died 10 Mar 1858/1859. I have found Martha in the 1850 and 1860 Census
of Baltimore MD living with Samuel and Martha Rust. In the 1860 Census
she has two children William Rust Neville and John Neville.
William Cole and Martha married on 25 Mar 1861 in Baltimore MD and there
they have disappeared. I cannot find them in the 1870 and 1880 Census
anywhere.
I found Martha's son William Rust Neville in the 1880 Census in
Baltimore MD and his brother John in West Virginia.
I think William Cole might be a shoe maker. Any help in finding William
Cole and Martha would be greatly appreciated.

How many Sarah Coles were there in Culpeper in the mid 1700s?
Here's another Sarah Cole who was supposedly born around 1718 and married a
Robert Leavell of Culpeper. Online data says they married "Abt. 1740,"
although their 1st child was born "Abt. 1748."
So, the possible scenario:
Isaac Chapman dies in early 1747 in Orange Co, VA.
Widow Sarah marries Robert Leavell in early 1748.
Sarah and Robert have a son Frances in late 1748.
The part of Orange Co. in which they live becomes Culpeper county in 1749.
Sarah's father John dies in 1757.
Sarah's mother Susannah dies in 1761.
Sarah and Robert leave VA for SC in 1769.
Now. . . MY Sarah had sons John and Richard by Isaac Chapman. Would she
have then had another John and another Richard by Robert Leavell?
Sounds like the premise for a trashy period romance novel, eh?

ROBERT LEAVELL was born September 15, 1718 in Culpeper County, Virginia, and
died June 28, 1797 in Newberry County, South Carolina. He married SARAH COLE
Abt. 1740. She died 1795. Robert left Virginia in 1769. On January 12, 1769,
Robert Levil was granted 300 acres on Bush River in Berkley (now Newberry
County), South Carolina. Robert Leavell was buried June 30, 1797 in Bush
River Baptist Church Cemetery, located 10 miles northwest of Newberry, South
Carolina.
Children of ROBERT LEAVELL and SARAH COLES are:
i. FRANCES LEAVELL, b. Abt. 1748.
ii. ? LEAVELL, b. Abt. 1753; d. Bef. 1787.
iii. EDWARD FRANKLIN LEAVELL, b. July 16, 1755, Newberry County, South
Carolina; d. January 16, 1832, DeKalb County, Georgia.
iv. JOHN LEAVELL, b. 1758, Virginia; d. May 04, 1826, Newberry County, South
Carolina.
v. RICHARD C. LEAVELL, b. Abt. 1759, Virginia; d. 1813, Georgia.
vi. FRANCES LEAVELL, b. Abt. 1760; d. Abt. 1780.
vii. ELIZABETH LEAVELL, b. Abt. 1762.
Did Sarah Cole Chapman marry Robert Leavell after the death of her husband,
Isaac Chapman in 1747?
