Does anyone have information about the COLE family members in early years of
the area that is now Buckland, Gates County, North Carolina? Or about the
history of Buckland?
I have read that Buckland, N.C. was named after the local Buckland
Plantation, which was named after the Virginia Buckland plantation of
William Cole.
Thank you,
Bob Cole

Hello,
I am looking for any information on the Martin COLE, (Esquire,) who married
Mary EARLE, as his 2nd wife, in Northumberland/Westmoreland County, Virginia
after the death of his 1st wife. Martin COLE, (Esquire,) became the guardian
for Mary EARLE, (immigrant in 1652,) who was the daughter of Mary SYMMON(D)S,
(immigrant in 1652,) and (Sir) John EARLE, I/Sr., (immigrant in 1649,) after the
deaths of Mary SYMMON(D)S in 1659 and the death of (Sir) John EARLE, I/Sr. in
1660 only a few months after his 2nd marriage to a woman named Mrs. Elizabeth
CAUSEY HOWELL who then married as Mrs. Elizabeth CAUSEY HOWELL EARLE to
3rd/4th/5th husband, William CLEMENT(S.) I do not know if Elizabeth's maiden name
was CAUSEY or if that was the name of one of her 5 husbands.
Martin COLE, (Esquire,) and Mary EARLE fought against her father's 2nd wife,
Elizabeth, to have her guardianship over Mary EARLE rescinded after Elizabeth
married William CLEMENT. Succeeding in her court case, Mary EARLE's
guardianship was given to the family attorney whom had represented her and he was
Martin COLE, (Esquire.) Mary EARLE moved into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Martin COLE
and after the death of Mrs. Martin COLE, it is believed that Mary EARLE and
Martin COLE, (Esquire,) married and moved back to England. Does anyone have
any information on them and their descendants?
It is probable that this Martin COLE was the brother or cousin of men named
Edward COLE and James COLE found at the same time in
Northumberland/Westmoreland County, Virginia and, possibly, to a Richard "Dick" COLE whom is found in
the same time period in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia.
Mary SYMMON(D)S and (Sir) John EARLE, I/Sr. are my paternal 8th great
grandparents and I descend through their son, Samuel EARLE, I, who 1st married my 7th
great grandmother, Bridget HALE(S)/HAYLES/HAILLES, (shown by some as
BAYLIS/BAYLES,) who then married 2nd wife, Mat(t)ilda ALLERTON, (shown by some as
Melinda ALLERTON,) who later married 2nd husband, William RUST/RUSH, and then
married 3rd husband, John BENNETT, believed to have been the father of my 6th
great grandmother, Phillis BENNETT, who married Samuel EARLE, II, son of Bridget
and Samuel EARLE, I.
Looking for any information on any of these individuals. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Bellinda Myrick-Barnett
Hello,
I am looking for any information about a man named Martin COLE, (Esquire,)
immigrant from England living in 1660 in Virginia in the area of Northumberland
County that became Westmoreland County probably in Cople Parish with his 1st
known wife whose name I do not know. This Martin COLE may have been the
brother of whom Richard "Dick" COLE of mid-1600s Old Rappahannock County, Virginia
spoke, but I am not sure. I do not know the names of the parents of Martin
COLE, (Esquire,) nor the name of his 1st wife.
Martin COLE, (Esquire,) was the family attorney for my paternal 8th great
grandparents, Mary SYMMON(D)S, (immigrant in 1652,) born; Abt. 1618 in
Gloucestershire, England, died: 1659 at "Spring Neck," EARLE's Creek, Yeocomico
Plantation, Northumberland/Westmoreland County, Virginia, and her husband, (Sir)
John EARLE, I/Sr., born: 1612/Abt. 1612 at Somerton Estate, Nye, Winscomb,
Somersetshire, England, died: September 1660 at "Spring Neck," EARLE's Creek,
Yeocomico Plantation, Northumberland/ Westmoreland County, Virginia, who married a
2nd wife, Elizabeth ?/Mrs. Elizabeth ?/CAUSEY? HOWELL later EARLE and then
md: William CLEMENT.
Martin COLE, (Esquire,) represented Mary EARLE, (daughter of Mary SYMMON(D)S
and (Sir) John EARLE, I/Sr.,) when Mary EARLE brought a lawsuit against her
stepmother, Elizabeth, whom had inherited the family home at "Spring Neck" after
the death of (Sir) John EARLE, I/Sr., and was, also, given guardianship over
her step-daughter, Mary EARLE, which Mary EARLE, represented in court by
Martin COLE, (Esquire,) after she had returned from a trip to England. Winning her
freedom from her step-mother, Elizabeth, Mary EARLE was placed under the
guardianship of Martin COLE, (Esquire,) and went to live in his home along with
him and his 1st wife, name unknown. Later, after the death of his 1st wife,
Martin COLE married his 'ward,' Mary EARLE, and they returned to England but I do
not know precisely where.
Mary EARLE immigrated from England to America either into Virginia or into
St. Mary's County, Maryland, where her father had earlier in 1649 immigrated
into before immediately moving into Northumberland County, Virginia where he
settled Yeocomico Plantation, along with her mother, Mary SYMMON(D)S/Mrs. John
EARLE, I/Sr. and 2 of Mary's brothers, John EARLE, II/Jr., and my paternal 7th
great grandfather, Samuel EARLE, I with another brother, William EARLE staying
in England to complete his education.
Looking for any information.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Bellinda Myrick-Barnett

Hello,
Does anyone have any marriages between WARNER and WILLOUGHBY families in
early to mid-1600s Virginia?
And does anyone on the WILLOUGHBY List have further information on:
Henry WILLOUGHBY
born: 1626 in Stewkley, England, (I am presuming that this is Stewkley,
Buckinghamshire, England
died: 1685 in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia
md: Joan ?/(was she a WARNER?/MOORE?/TOWNELEY?)
born: Abt./Aft. 1626 in ?/prob. somewhere in England
died: 1674/75 prob. in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia
Henry WILLOUGHBY was the son of George WILLOUGHBY, (Esquire,) who was the
grandson of (Sir) Ambrose WILLOUGHBY, (Knight. of Malton,) of Gloucestershire,
England, (where my SYMMON(D)S family also was in the same timeframe with my 8th
great grandmother, Mary SYMMON(D)S, immigrant, marrying my 8th gr. gr.father,
(Sir) John EARLE, I/Sr., who immigrated from Somersetshire, England into
Northumberland County, Virginia in 1649,) and (Sir) Ambrose WILLOUGHBY was the 2nd
son of Charles WILLOUGBY, 2nd Lord Willoughby, of Parham.
My JENNINGS-PAYNE-ROBINSON-MOORE family group also immigrated from England
into Old Rappahannock County, Virginia in the very early to mid-1600s and John
JENNINGS, Sr. married as the 1st husband of Margaret PAYNE, (d/o Margaret
ROBINSON and John PAYNE, Sr.,) (later Mrs. Margaret PAYNE JENNINGS married 2nd
husband, Christopher EDRINGTON, Sr.,) and their son, William JENNINGS, born: Abt.
1660 in Old Rappahannock County, VA, married Mary WILLOUGHBY, (my paternal 7th
great grandparents.) In addition to other children, William JENNINGS, Sr.
and Mary WILLOUGHBY, were the parents of 3 sons named Willoughby JENNINGS,
Augustine JENNINGS, (who married Hannah WILLIAMS,) and my 6th great grandfather,
William JENNINGS, Jr., born: Abt. 1695 in Richmond County, Virginia, who
married Ann KELLY, (d/o Amy DONIPHAN and (Captain) John KELLY.)
We have never been able to find anything regarding the parents of Mary
WILLOUGHBY other than "she probably is descended somehow from (Sir) Ambrose
WILLOUGHBY.
Is it possible that this aforementioned Henry WILLOUGHBY and wife, Joane ?
were the parents of Mary WILLOUGHBY who married William JENNINGS, Sr.?
And, as far as I know, William JENNINGS, Sr. and Mary WILLOUGHBY's son,
Augustine JENNINGS, is the first time that the name of WARNER enters into the
JENNINGS family group or the PAYNE or ROBINSON. Is it possible that the name of
Augustine JENNINGS came from a family relationship to Augustine WARNER, I and
II? Or......
Still looking to find information on the Anne MOORE who married Richard
ROBINSON, an early 1600s immigrant from England to the Tidewater area of Virginia
who was the uncle to Christopher ROBINSON. There is an Augustine MOORE who
might possibly be related to Anne MOORE and might possibly explain the name of
Augustine JENNINGS.
All of these families as well as the WASHINGTON family that the
READE-TOWNELEY-WARNER family group married into had connections to Old Rappahannock County,
VA and looking to find some of the missing pieces. And, if I am remembering
correctly, I believe that I saw an earlier name of an Augustine TOWNELEY, as
well, but not certain regarding that.
My aforementioned William JENNINGS, Jr. and wife, Ann KELLY, both died in the
late 30s in Richmond County, Virginia leaving their 5 minor children orphaned
and placed under the guardianship of uncles, Alexander Doniphan KELLY,
Matthew KELLY, and Augustine JENNINGS, born: 1708 in Richmond County, Virginia, who
later lived in Fauquier County, Virginia with his wife, Hannah WILLIAMS,
believed to be the daughter of a James WILLIAMS, and somehow related to the
WILLIAMS-BALL family group who married into the WASHINGTON family group and this
WILLIAMS group in Fauquier County, Virginia is probably somehow related to either
the PEMBERTON-WILLIAMS or the BILLINGTON-WILLIAMS family group that my
paternal 4th great grandmother, Tabitha WILLIAMS, was born into in Abt. 1766 in
North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia, who married Samuel EARLE, IV,
(2nd son of his name,) born: 1760 in Town Run, Fauquier County, Virginia, who
was the son of Elizabeth HOL(D)BROOK, (2nd wife,) and husband, (Major) Samuel
EARLE, III, (who had an earlier son named Samuel EARLE, IV, born: 1727, with his
1st wife, Anna SORRELL.) (Major) Samuel EARLE, III was the 1st Member of the
Virginia House of Burgesses to be elected from Frederick County, Virginia
holding the seat that would later be held by (General) George WASHINGTON.
(Major) Samuel EARLE, III was the son of Phillis BENNETT and Samuel EARLE, II, son
of Bridget HALE(S)/HAYLES/or poss. BAYLIS(S)/BAYLES(S,) (1st wife,) and Samuel
EARLE, I, (who later md: Mat(t)ilda ALLERTON who later married William
RUST/RUSH and John BENNETT,) and Samuel EARLE, I, (who owned land adjoining that of
Augustine WASHINGTON, (father of George and son of Lawrence WASHINGTON and
Mildred WARNER,) and Samuel EARLE, I was the son of Mary SYMMON(D)S, born: abt.
1618 in Gloucestershire, England, died: 1659 in Northumberland County, Virginia,
and husband, (Sir) John EARLE, I/Sr., born: 1612 in Somerton Estate, Nye,
Winscomb, Somersetshire, England, immigrated in 1649 through St. Mary's County,
Maryland into Northumberland County, Virginia where he settled Yeocomico
Plantation, and after Mary's death in 1659 in 1660 John EARLE, I married Mrs.
Elizabeth ?/CAUSEY ?/CAUSEY HOWELL who, after John's death in September 1660,
married 4th husband, William CLEMENT. After the death of (Sir) John EARLE, I, his
and wife, Mary SYMMON(D)S, only daughter, Mary EARLE, married her widower
attorney, Martin COLE, and returned with him to England. I believe that Martin
COLE may be the brother that Richard "Dick" COLE mentioned in his will.
Lots of connections known and missing here.
Looking forward to hearing from anyone who might help with any of these
missing pieces.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Bellinda Myrick-Barnett
