Attn: Barb and Lynn,
Barb: Yes, we have corresponded before. I still haven't been able to connect
our Cole lines, but maybe, if we keep digging, we still may. I typed the
name, Elizabeth Stoneman into Google and found the following site, which you may
already know about, but thought I would tell you about, just in case.
Biography and Genealogy of the men in the Flower Swift Militia Company of Montgomery
Co., Virginia The bio on Charles Cole read as follows:
"COLE: Charles
Charles (b. abt 1760) m. Quaker Elizabeth Stoneman. I believe Charles and
Elizabeth migrated to Carroll/Grayson Co. shortly after the Revolution, but the
property he lived on may have been purchased as early as 1774 by another
Charles Cole who may have been his father (or it could have been him if the birth
date is wrong), but may not have lived there.
There are no Coles or Coals on the 1767-1771 Regulator petitions.
1782 Montgomery tax list: not present. 1793 list 1 horse and no blacks."
Lynn: My Matthew, (b c1760), son of Joseph, was married twice...first to
Deana Wood and second to Sarah Harper. To date I have not found a will for
him...but I keep looking. To the best of my knowledge, he died in North Carolina.
I know he was in NC during the Revolutionary War, because his "loyalty and
material aid rendered to the cause of American Independence" in NC during the war
(i.e., selling them horses) has been accepted as creditable service by the
DAR to make his direct female descendants eligible for membership in their
organization. I also know Matthew was in NC in 1805 when my 2nd great grandfather,
Joel Cole, was born and he is on the 1820 Buncombe Co., NC Census. I don't
have a copy of the 1830 census, but have been told Matthew has not been found
on any census after 1820.
It was good hearing from both of you,

We have corresponded before I believe. I am trying to find Charles Cole
b ca 1761. I have recently found info in a census that he may have been
born in Md. The census lists one of his sons Joshua, and where is has
pob for father, it says MD. There is also a story in the family, that
his grandson went to Md one time for a visit to family. That is a
shortened version of the story, but I don't think someone in the late
1800's would have traveled from Grayson Co VA to Md, taking his whole
family, unless it was for an event of some family occasion, whether
funeral, marriage, etc. The earliest I can find him is in 1782 in
Montgomery Co VA, in the part that became Grayson.
Another thing that interests me is your Matthew. There is a Matthew
Cole in the 1794 Grayson Tax List, along with Richard, Charles, Charles,
James and Stephen all having one tithable, except one the of the Charles
has two tithables. Could this be your Matthew, and are all these Coles
listed related.
The 1761, I have as Charles birthdate, may not be correct. If it is, he
wasn't married until he was in his 30's as he marred Elizabeth Stoneman
in 1795, and also had a child in 1811.

Attn: Jerry Bryan
I am also a Cole/Cross descendant.
My 4th great grandparents were Ruth Cross b. c1735 (dau of John Cross, and
sister of your William Cross, born c1730) and Joseph Cole b. c1716--d. c1795
(son of John Cole and his second wife, Dianah Hawkins.) The Joseph Cole, Jr. you
mentioned was one of their sons (their son, Matthew, was my 3rd great
grandfather.) You also mentioned a Solomon Cole...this was the name of another of
Joseph and Ruth's sons.
According to the book, "Baltimore County Families, 1659--1759", William Cole
(son of John Cole and his first wife, Johanne Hawkins) did marry a Mary
Giles, and indeed one of their daughters was named Alice, however, according to the
same book this Alice married a Robert Caples. However, in the book,
"Maryland Marriages, 1634--1777" there is a marriage listed for a William Cross and an
Alice Cole on 4-24-1753. I don't know if this is the same Alice Cole or not,
or if, perhaps, she was married twice. (NOTE: The marriage book also lists a
marriage between a William Cross and a Dorcus Croscomb on 12-24-1738...again,
don't know if this is the same William Cross and perhaps a previous marriage.)
I also have a copy of William Cole's will in which he names his children and
his wife "Mary" (one of their sons was named Giles, which was probably for
his mother's maiden name. (NOTE 2: William Cole and Joseph Cole were half
brothers.)
I also show Abraham Cross as William's son, and if we are right, that would
make him the nephew of Joseph Cole's wife, Ruth (Cross) Cole.
I show Henry Cross as being the son of Benjamin Cross (also brother of Ruth
(Cross) Cole, making Henry also her nephew). I show Benjamin's wife to be an
Elizabeth Cole. I am sure she must be related to Joseph Cole, but I am not
sure just how as yet. (I have 13 Elizabeth Cole's in my database, several of
which I don't have the names of their spouses!)
I would like to exchange more information with you on our Cross/Cole kin. I
have a genealogy website (see URL below) which has a lot of information on it
re these families. A lot of this information has not yet been properly
documented, but I have uploaded it hoping to get corrections and/or additional
information.

I have written several times before about my gg grandfather William Cole of
Anderson County, Tennessee who is a brick wall. However, I have not written
before of my other Cole line.
My gggg grandfather in Anderson County, Tennessee was William Cross who was
a Revolutionary War drummer boy. He was born in Baltimore County, Maryland
and was living in what is now Sullivan County, Tennessee at the time he
served in the Revolutionary War. William Cross the drummer's dates were
1862-1844. He moved to Anderson County from Sullivan County in 1818.
Conventional wisdom is that William Cross the drummer was one of four
brothers who served in the Revolutionary War. They were the Abraham Cross,
Zachariah Cross, Elijah Cross, and the aforementioned William Cross.
Conventional wisdom also says that the four brothers were sons of William
Cross (1730-1770) and Alice Cole of Baltimore County, Maryland.
There was definitely a William Cross who married Alice Cole, and he
definitely died in 1770. His will gave everything to his wife Alice, and
his will did not name the children. I'm not as sure as I would like to be
that William Cross and Alice Cole were the parents of the four Cross
brothers who served in the Revolutionary War, but for the time being I'm
accepting it as a working hypothesis.
Many researchers list Alice Cole as the daughter of William Cole and Mary
Giles. I'm confident of Alice's father, but I am still looking for
confirmation of her mother. But in any case, Alice's father William Cole is
a brick wall. So I seem to have two totally different William Coles who are
brick walls. Alice's father William Cole was born about 1713 and died 25
Jun 1770. Alice's husband William Cross died 19 Feb 1770, so Alice's father
died only a few months after her husband. William Cross and Alice Cole were
married 24 Apr 1753 in St. John's Parish, Baltimore County, Maryland.
Here is the last will and testament of William Cross.
William Cross in his perfect senses Desired In the presence of John Foster,
Richard Cross, Nehemiah Hicks and Mary Miller, that his Wife Alice Cross
should have all his Estate of what nature or kind soever, during her life,
and after her Decease the whole should be sold and the money divided among
his children. The above said William Cross departed this life on Monday
morning the nineteenth day of February 1770. Tuesday ye 20 day of February
1770.
William Cross had purchased a tract of land called "Lowe's Range" April 1764
from his brother Benjamin Cross and Benjamin's wife Elizabeth. After William
Cross died, Alice Cole transferred her property rights to her father before
he died. William Cole left his lands including what Alice Cole transferred
to him to his own children. This left William Cross' sons landless except
for the 50 acre plot known as "Lowe's Range".
William Cross the drummer (the son of Alice Cole, not the husband of Alice
Cole) was only eight years old when his father died in 1770 in Baltimore
County, Maryland. He served as a drummer in 1776. So the family must have
moved from Baltimore County, Maryland to what is now Sullivan County,
Tennessee sometime between 1770 and 1776. Some researchers say that Alice
Cole died in Baltimore County, Maryland before the move. Other researchers
say that she moved with the family to what is now Tennessee. I have not yet
seen enough evidence to be persuaded either way.
There was an interesting land grant in 1779 in Sullivan County, Tennessee
(recorded in North Carolina before Tennessee became a state). It was for
100 acres, with 72 acres going to Joseph Cole and 28 acres going to Abraham
Cross. The land grant was on Linville Creek, just southeast of what is now
Blountville in Sullivan County. I believe this Abraham Cross was the son of
William Cross and Alice Cole, and the brother of William Cross the drummer.
I don't know who Joseph Cole was. It seems likely that he was either the
brother or the nephew of Alice Cole. If the former then he was the uncle of
William Cross the drummer and if the latter then he was the first cousin of
William Cross the drummer.
The 1778 tax list for Washington County, Tennessee lists Joseph Cole and
Henry Cross living a few houses from each other. Some explanation is
required. Washington County was the first county in what is now Tennessee.
It was created by an act of the North Carolina legislature in 1777. It's
original boundaries were essentially the boundaries of the modern day state
of Tennessee. Sullivan County was created from Washington County in 1779,
and the land grant of Joseph Cole and Abraham Cross was recorded in
"Sullivan County, North Carolina" after Sullivan County was created. Henry
Cross had several land grants which were near the land grant of Joseph Cole
and Abraham Cross. In any case, the 1778 Washington County, Tennessee tax
list is very important because it was essentially a census of the whole
state of Tennessee for that year (except that little of the state was
populated in 1778 except for the northeast corner where Tennessee and
Virginia meet).
Henry Cross is a big mystery. I find no records for him in Baltimore
County, Maryland. I don't know exactly how he fits into the rest of the
Cross family from Baltimore County. But many of William Cross and Alice
Cole's offspring were still children when William died in 1770, so I figure
there must have been an adult Cross male or an adult Cole male (or both) who
led the family on their expedition from Baltimore County, Maryland to what
is now Sullivan County, Tennessee. And my best candidates are Joseph Cole
and Henry Cross. Even Abraham Cross who was the oldest child of William
Cross and Alice Cole was only about 18 years old when William died in 1770.
There was also a Solomon Coal in the 1778 Washington County tax list. He
was not living close to Henry Cross and Joseph Cole. I don't know if he was
from the same Cole family as Alice Cole.
The 1796 Sullivan County tax list has both a Joseph Cole Jr. and an Elisha
Cole. The list is alphabetized, so there are not any hints as to who was
living next to whom. I don't know if Joseph Cole Jr. in the 1796 tax list
and Joseph Cole from the 1779 land grant were the same person or not. When
Hawkins County was created from Sullivan County on 1786, the Sullivan County
county seat was moved to what is now Blountville. The first meeting of the
court was at the home of Joseph Cole.
That's about all I know about Alice Cole. If anybody can fill in any holes
or make any corrections, it would be most appreciated.
Jerry Bryan

I am seeking information on a child born to CLARA GUSBERG in Connecticut
sometime in the few years immediately prior to 1919 when CLARA gave birth to
a son on Sept. 19. His birth certificate says 2nd child of this mother, both
living. Clara married SAMUEL EDWARD COLE in Aug. 17, 1917 in Hartford, CT.
but in 1918 lived at 48 No.Chapel St., in Newark, DE. By the 1920 census
Clara was living with her infant son in Simsbury, CT. with the Psaty family
and apparently separated from Mr. Cole. The CT. Dept. of Vital Records
refuses to provide any info on this half-sibling of mine and all others in
the family who might have been able to are deceased. Clara was born in
Newark, N.J. in 1896 and lived at various times in Delaware and Rhode
Island. If anyone can provide information on this birth please e-mail me
personally. Thank you.

Hello list,
I am trying to find out if any male descendants of the James COLE family of Natchez Mississippi are participating in the DNA project at FamilyTree DNA?(This James COLE arrived in Natchez circa 1772)- I have been trying to prove (or disprove) a link with my James COLE, born ca 1794 in MS or LA and think this DNA project will help.
If you are participating in this study I would like to correspond with you and have one of my male COLE cousins participate. My James COLE family stayed in the Avoyelles Parish and Pointe Coupee Parish area of Louisiana from ~1800-Now.
Thanks,

Searching for a photo of my mother's first husband: SAMUEL EDWARD COLE (or
Edward Samuel) Cole. He was born in Cherry Hill (Cecil CO.), Maryland in
1865. He married CLARA GUSBERG in Aug. 17, 1917 in Hartford, CT. In June
1918 they were living at 48 No. Chapel St., in Newark, Delaware. In Sept,
1919 they had a child born in Hartford, CT. but by 1920 they apparently were
separated as Clara was living with her infant son in Simsbury, CT. The Coles
were paper mill workers and Mr. Cole was well known in Delaware, W. Chester,
and Coatesville, Pa. He was an officer in the Knights of Pythias, the
Freemasons and a volunteer fireman in Newark, DE. Mr. Cole died in 1940
while living with his sister Ida (Mrs. Wm. Morrison) at 28 Choate, St., in
Newark, DE. He is buried in the family plot in Cherry Hill, MD. in the
Methodist Church Cemetery. His parents were: James & Mary Elizabeth (nee

Hi List,
I decided to trace back an ancestor who was taken prisoner to Quebec and
ended up marrying into my SEGUIN dit LADEROUTE lines. Her name was
Madeleine Cole b. 19 Oct. 1698 according to Tanguay. She was supposedly a
child of Joseph COLE and Sarah RANDALL. Madeleine was supposedly born in
Beverly, Massachusetts. I have no verification on this. Now my question.
When I do internet checks on Joseph COLE, I see his birth date anywhere from
abt. 1657 in Beverly, MA. to 1680 in Maine, Cleaves Cove, York, Maine,
Saco, Maine and Boston, MA. Some have no parents for him and others have
John COLE and Mary CHILSON.
If you have any information on Joseph that I may use, especially info that
has been verified, I would love to hear from you. Supposedly Joseph died
during an Indian raid and his three daughters were carried off to Quebec. I
cannot drive so getting to the FHC is next to impossible. We have no public
transportation in this county. Thanks for any help and suggestions. I have
even tried a Google search without much luck in straightening out the
confusion. If you are related to SEGUIN dit LADEROUTE, I can give you what
info I have gathered so far, mostly through Tanguay, in return.

Hi Listers:
I am seeking information or data on a child born to my mother: CLARA
GUSBERG prior to 1918 in Connecticut. The child was probably put up for
adoption which records are sealed. In Aug. 1917 my mother (who was born
in Newark, N.J. in 1896) married SAMUEL EDWARD COLE in Hartford, CT. In
June 1918 the Coles were living at 48 No. Chapel St., in Newark,
Delaware. In Sept. 1919 my mom, now separated from Cole, gave birth to a
son who is listed as Henry Gusberg in the Hartford 1920 census but was
actually the son of Samuel E. Cole. Henry's birth certificate says he was
the 2nd birth of this mother with both living. The child named Henry (for
unknown reasons) later was adopted by my father and was renamed Harold
Edward McCue. If anyone has any knowledge of the first child (who would
be in his/her 80s now) please e-mail me directly. Thank you.
