Does anyone have links to a John Cole who married an Agnus Rayburn and
was located in Lunenburg Co. VA c1750.
Their daughter, Susannah Cole, married a Thomas Wells and had one
child, Lewis Wells, prior to Thomas Wells' death in 1755, probably
while living on the property of John Cole. This property was located
in the extreme south east corner of what is now Mecklenburg Co.,
VA---on Great Creek, just north of its mouth at the Roanoke River. I
would like to know where this Cole family was located prior to
entering Lunenburg Co., VA.
Thank you for any information you can provide.

Brad -
I am trying to locate anything on an Alfred M. Cole who lived at some time in
Clayton (Jefferson Co.), maybe Theresa, and possibly was born or lived in a
neighboring county (Delaware/Otsego) around the time he was born -est 1850. He
may have served in the 144th Regiment from NY; he may have a brother named
Harrison Cole, who was also married in Theresa, NY (both at the Methodist
Episcopalian Church in Theresa). I was hoping to find someone else looking for this
line, as I cannot find Alfred's parents or siblings, and keep running into
many Cole families in the area, just not finding his direct relation. Alfred M.
married (Wilhel)Mina Nicol/Nichols from Clayton, NY. He was living in
Clayton at the time of his marriage, but I suspect he lived in either Orleans,
Ontario, or Oswego Counties at the time of his birth. I have had no luck finding
his ancestors, if anyone has heard of this sibling, would appreciate any
information on Alfred M. Cole.
Thanks,
Donna Cole
I am trying to locate information pertaining to an Andy Cole who was
reportedly born at "Roney's Pt" Ohio Co., WV in 1862.
He married Lucy Angela Patterson in 1882 at West Alexander Washington Co., PA
This is all the information I have on him, except that he and Lucy Angela had a son
and daughter:
Della Maybelle in 1883
and Edward M in 1885
perhaps these name can be a clue to the lineage, as they don't appear in Lucy Angela
Patterson's line.
Lucy remarried by 1890 in Elm Grove Ohio Co., WV and had 7 more children.
No mention as to where Andy Cole went.
Thanks so much,

Dear Gordon Cole,
In my files I have only one Henderson and it is listed as: "Living
(Male)Henderson and he is married to someone listed as: " Living
(Female)Gilbert
this female Gilbert is the daughter and is 1 out of 9 children of
Leonard Gilbert and Pleas Hicks.
Pleas Hicks is the daughter of Ephriam Clem Hicks born 10 Jun 1876 died
23 Feb 1928 and
Maggie P. Whitworth. My records show that Ephriam Clem Hicks and Maggie
P. Whitworth were married on 13 Oct 1897 in Morris County, Tx.
The parents of my same Ephriam Clem Hicks are Ephriam Hicks born ABT.
1827 Kentucky died ABT. 1890 in Cass Co. TX and married 13 Apr 1853 in
Jackson Co. AL to Frances (Frankie) McCrary born ABT. 1835 Alabama died
ABT. 1890 Cass Co. TX. they too, had 9 children.
This same Frances (Frankie) McCrary was eldest child of 5 children of
Samuel McCrary born Abt 1807 ,Burke Co,North Carolina and died between
1834/1898 whom married to Celia Rash.
This particular Samuel McCrary is the Grandson to Joseph McCrary born
1749 Ulster, County Armagh, Northern Ireland died ABT. 1825 Burke Co.,
North Carolina.
This same particular Joseph McCrary that was born in Ireland mentioned
here is My Great,Great,Great,Great Grandfather on and is the Great,Great
Grandfather to my Grandmother Alberta Louise McCrary's side and Albertais
my mother's mother too,ok?
So, if you have any Henderson's in your family tree that are married to
Gilberts please let me know too,as I hate to have just the words: "Living
in front of any Surname in my files too,ok? I not only have member of My
"Cole"family married to a member of my " Crowder"Family, I also have a
member of same "Cole Family" married to a member of my "Sloan" Family
too, so I guess you can say that I am my own cousin too, so to speak;ok?

I don't know anything else about Nathan R. Cole. I know of only one other
family member researching him, Scott Hunt. I dug around Champaign Co., Ohio

Dear Cole researchers:
I have recently uncovered a mistake in the Cole genealogy from all the way back to the early 1800's. This is what I had originally thought to be the truth:
Seth Cole of Sterling, CT. and his wife, Mary Colvin had twin children
Mary Cole and Seth Cole.
This daughter of Seth and Mary Cole, Mary Cole, was then thought to marry Frink Dorrance of Foster Rhode Island.
**** This is where the mistake lies. ******
This is what I have uncovered:
Seth and Mary Cole did have twins Mary and Seth. However, this Mary Cole did not marry Frink Dorrance.
Frink Dorrance married Mary Cole, daughter of John and Hannah Cole of Seekonk (later Rehoboth) Massachusetts. I discovered this through a series of primary sources, starting with Louisa M. Cole's will. Louisa was the daughter of John and Hannah Cole, and in her will, she left to her niece, Mary E. Dorrance (daughter of Frink and Mary Cole Dorrance) land and a large sum of money. I then checked census records and I found that Mary Cole Dorrance was living with her son, Henry F. Dorrance in E. Providence, RI in 1850 and on that census, it listed her birth place as Massachusetts, not Connecticut. I then requested Mary's death certificate from Rhode Island Archives and it did, indeed, state that she was the daughter of John and Hannah Cole.
I think that anyone researching this line, should make this correction. If you would like to contact me my email is krausl(a)sunyocc.edu.
Happy Holidays!
Leslie
Does anyone have a Cole connection (South Carolina for starters) to the name
Van Dora? I have an ancestor named Mary Van Dora Cole, ca. 1810 to after
1850. I don't have a clue as to her parents or where the family was before
SC. She married Thomas (Edward?) Cobb, ca 1787-after 1850; they lived in
Richland County, SC.
Maybe the middle name of Van Dora will be a starting point in learning her
ancestry.
Thanks for any clues,
Glenna

My grandmother's name was Ellen Cole Ledford and her father's name was Nells
or Nelson? Cole. They lived in or around Maryville, Blount county, Tennessee.
They also could have lived in Sevier county at one time. She is buried in
Blount county. I have been trying to do research on this side of my family tree
with no luck. I have hit a brick wall on this side. If anyone has any
information it would be appreciated.
Dearest Tamara, I will have to agree with you 200% and why I say 200% is
the fact that within my "Cole" branch of my family line I have a John
Casper Cole which was my Great Grandfather on my Father's Mother Phoebe
Louise 'Lottie' Cole's side as John Casper Cole was her father and Phoebe
had 3 sisters and 1 brother and the brother's name was John too;ok?
That line is as follows and that line looks like this:
John Casper Cole born 30 Jul 1872 Houston,Harris Co.,Texas died Mar 1965
Houston, Harris, Texas, buried Mar 1965 Heartsville Cemetary, Texas
married Ola Self died before 1968 Houston,Harris, Texas, buried in
Houston, Harris, Texas
Their 5 children are:
1) Phoebe Lousie 'Lottie' Cole (Female) born 27 Mar 1898 Sealy,Austin
County,Texas died Jul 1976 Brookside Village, Brazoria County, Pearland,
Texas buried Jul 1976 Heartsville Cemetary, Texas married before 1920 to
H.B. Crowder Jr.born 1897 ,Waller County,Texas died Abt 28 Apr 1932
Houston, Harris, Texas, buried Abt 30 Apr 1932 in Heartsville Cemetary,
Texas
2) Sis Cole (Female)born 1900 she married a Mr. Eckles and had a son
Jack Eckles that was a Rodeo Circuit
Rider made Big Money Bronc & Bull Riding and Jack married a lady that was
a Trick Rider in the same. Jack Eckles later became a Texas Ranger.
3) Abbigale Cole(Female) born 12 Sep 1902 Sealy,Austin County,Texas died
7 Oct 1995 Houston, Harris, Texas
Abby was married 3 times and all three left her a widow
I know and remember the last 2 of the 3 husbands, as I was born and old
enough to remember them
and meaning her # 2 husband was J.J.Ronan or John J. Ronan as his first
name was/is John and
her third one was John Cagle.
4) Halley Cole born abt 1906 Sealy,Austin County,Texas Died in early to
mid 1980's buried at Heartsville Cemetary, Wallace, , Texas was married
to Adolph Leoscher
5) John Cole (Male) born Abt 1908 Sealy,Austin County,Texas
So, if I could get a hold of either the 1900 Census for Sealy, Austin
County,Texas, or the 1910 Census for Sealy,Austin County,Texas I could
find out exactly where my Great Grandfather John Casper Cole was born or
at least where he came from too.eh?
With that I could also find out where my Ola Self was from too as I could
get a copy of anyone of their children's birth Certificates like for my
Grandmother Phoebe's or Great Aunt Great Abby', Great Aunt Halley's or
Great Aunt Sis's or Great Uncle John's and any one of them would or
should have where their parents were born on them too,eh? Then I can dig
around this dead end of Ola Self's people too:O)

Subject: [COLE] Cole Family of Rutherford Co NC and Spartanburg SC
Most of the Cole family data being used as sources today is based on
the research of Opal R. Cole, of Rutherfordton, NC. I recently received
a copy of her research and while she did a great job of getting the Cole
family down on paper, there are a few errors in her work. This occurs
mostly in the earlier generations but to be safe, I would verify
everything if
this is your family.
Mrs. Cole states in her publication History of the John and Susannah
Cole Family that John is the son of Thomas Cole. She also states,
without
mentioning any specific sources, that John and Susannah were the
parents of Joseph, Harriett, William, J. Newton, Susannah and Isabella
Cole. I
believe these facts to be in error. Read through the rest of this page
and
see if you don't agree...
John Cole is a very common name. I have found no proof that John Cole
(1782-1871) was the son of Thomas Cole of Spartanburg Co. SC. Thomas
names a son John in his will but that doesn't mean he is this John Cole.
In
fact, there is a document in the probate file that states that his son
John is not of this state'. Now I know that Rutherford Co. is not in SC,
however it is just across the state line and close enough that he could
have been
present to claim his inheritance. The other children listed as 'not
of this state' were in Georgia and Tennessee. There was a John Cole in
Hall
Co. GA in 1830, born in SC with a daughter Susanna, with no proven
heritage
as far as I know.
I believe that John Cole was the son of Joseph Cole, (1760/65-abt 1840).
When examining the records for Joseph Cole, I find him in 1787 in
York Co., SC as administrator, along with James Venables, for the estate
of
Hugh Bryson. (James Venables and his wife named a son Hugh.) York Co.
was
just across the Broad River from Spartanburg County at that time. In the
1790 census of York Co., Joseph has two males over 16, one male under 16
and three females in the household. This is probably Joseph at age 25-30
and possibly a brother or brother-in-law, son John age about 8, and
daughters Jane and Peggy and his wife. I can't locate him in 1800,
perhaps he
is on the page of microfilm for York Co. that was covered up and is
unreadable. In 1810 he is in Rutherford Co., NC and is over 45 as is his
wife, with
2 sons 16-26 (John was already married) one daughter 10-16, 3 dtrs 16-26
(Peggy was already married). In 1820, Joseph and wife are over 45 with
no other
persons in the household.
In 1818 Joseph Cole witnesses the will of Elizabeth Brisco, along
with jurat Sucky Coal, executors John Cole and Phillip Henson. And in
1822
Joseph is named executor on Hugh Cole of Spartanburg's will along with
Charles
Cantrell, witnessed by Thomas Henson, John Cantrell and Thomas
Robbins. Then in 1823 Joseph is listed as jurat. on Thomas Hall's will
along with
John Cole, witnessed by Thomas Henson and leaving property to William
Owens, husband of Peggy Cole in Rutherford Co., NC. Thomas Henson was
married to Jane Cole and later relocated to Haywood County, NC.
Then in 1830, Joseph and wife have three children living with them
again as outlined below. Joseph does not appear in the 1840 census and
in
1841, Wilson Putman (husband of his granddaughter) is appointed
administrator over his estate. He was replaced by John Cole in 1842,
about the time
Wilson and Milley Cole Putman moved to Haywood County, NC. Names on the
sale
list include Robbins, Roach and Splawn. In John Cole's will, he names
his wife, daughter-in-law Nancy Cole [husband William deceased], her
youngest son Dillard Cole; daughter Harriet
wife of John Roach; son Newton Cole. Why would he not mention his
daughter
Susannah s spouse/children? Or Joseph or Isabella? I believe it's no
coincidence that Joseph, Susannah and Isabella (among others) were named
in the
will of Hugh Cole in Spartanburg, SC in 1823.
Susannah Cole married William Splawn in 1841, yet in the 1840
census, John Cole has no young females in his household. So where was
Susannah?
In 1830 I found John Cole with 2 males 10-15 ( William and Isaac
Newton), 1 male 30-40 (?) and 40-50 (John would be 48); a 30-40 year old
female
(wife Susannah age 38) and an 80-90 yr. old female. A widow since 1816,
Susannah's mother, Sarah Robbins is probably the 80-90 female.
The 1820 census has John and Susan age 26-45 (21001-2001), 2
daughters under 10, Harriet and ? - male children 2 under age 10
(William and
Newton), one male 10-16 (there was no son 10 years ago, could this be a
brother or
in-law?). And the 1810 census shows John Cole 16-25 and wife same
age with no children.
I believe Susanna was in the household of her grandfather, Joseph
Cole in 1830 along with her brother Joseph and one of her sisters,
Milley &
Isabella They were all the children of Hugh and Mary Cole of
Spartanburg.
Hugh's will dated 1823 (exec. Joseph Cole) lists these children plus
Charles
Jackson Cole, who I believe died young. John and Hugh are probably
brothers. Joseph, Milley and Isabella all married in 1839.
John Cole's wife was Susannah Robbins, daughter of William Robbins
and Sarah (and sister of my GGG Grandmother Elizabeth Robbins who
married James
Splawn). Their children were Harriet married John Roach; William
married Nancy; and Isaac Newton married Martha Butler.
Hugh's children were Joseph married Elizabeth Putman (had a son
named Hugh); Susannah married William M. Splawn (had a son named Hugh);
Milley
Cole married Wilson Putman, brother of Elizabeth (had a son named Hugh);
Isabella married William D. Henson, and Charles Jackson Cole. In 1850
William
and Isabella Cole Henson were in Haywood Co., NC, as were Wilson and
Milley Cole Putman.

anyone needs them. And more on my families on my website at

Does anybody have or know of any sites that has the names of those who were
killed and/or somehow involved in the Wyoming Valley Massacre during the

I am most interested in any Cole ancestors.
I have some information, but no proof as yet that a James Cole (Jacobus Kool)
moved North fleeing the Wyoming Valley Massacre. He may have come with a
daughter or daughter-in-law with his Grandson, Elijah Cole. James and Elijah are
direct ancestors of mine and would appreciate any information provided
Thanks to all

Obit for Luke Cole - Ironton, OH
"DEATH OF LUKE COLE - Luke Cole died at his home on Railroad St. last
Sunday, after a brief sickness, at the age of 56 years. He was born in
England in 1829. His mother dying when he was very young, he moved with
his father to Canada, where they remained ten years. In 1842, he came to
the U.S., settling at Newark. Afterwards, moved to Athens, where he was
married in 1851 to Lorana Witham, who survives him. Right after this
marriage he moved to Ironton and has lived here ever since. He has been
a member of Wesley Chapel for about 20 years. He was a prominent and
influential member of the order of Odd Fellows and held responsible
position therein. His wife and six children are left to mourn him. For
many years of his residence in Ironton he was in the bakery business, and
for twelve years has worked for Lambert Brothers. Luke Cole was a
modest, honest, industrious man for who all the community entertained
sentiments fo the hightest respect. His funeral takes place this
Wednesday afternoon."
Anyone with a connection to this man, would appreciate hearing from you.
