George [Martin] Cole was born in NC, son of John and Martha. Living in Haywood Co., TN in 1850 census, he is age 20, his siblings are James M. Cole, age 21; Rachel, age 18; Martha, age 13; [all born NC] and Andrew J, age 8; John W., age 4, both born TN.
By 1860, George M. age 29, Susan, age 33, Mary L, age 6F; Theodosia, age 3F, and John R age 3/12M, all born TN. George owns property worth 550. and is a farmer.
1870 census listed as Martin Cole, age 39, property worth 800; Amanda, age 24 b. TN;
Mary, age 14F; Theodisa, age 12F; Martha, age 2F [my g-grandmother].
In 1880, still in Haywood Co., George is 50, farmer; 3rd wife Mary, age 44, daughter Mattie, 12; son George 1/12
About 1885, Martha [Mattie] Cole married John Samuel Giffin and was living in Winston Co., MS.
Does anyone connect to this family? I would like to know how Mattie came to be in Winston County after 1880. Did George move to Mississippi? The burned 1890 census might have provided an answer. I would love information on Mattie's siblings also.

I am replying to an email I recieved with a little
more information about my Cole's. I did find my Henry
and Mary and three children in the 1880 census of
Philadelphia. Henry and Mary were both born in
Maryland and their first child Mary was born in
Delaware and their two sons were born in Pennsylvania.
I am guessing they stayed in Pennsylvania because my
gggrandfather Carroll Cole lived and died in
Philadelphia, PA and the 1880 census where I found
Henry and Mary was a Philadelphia census. I didn't
have my gggrandparents names and I didn't know they
were even born in Maryland until I saw this census. I
am just hoping now since I have a further extension to
hook up to someone else.
Any more questions feel free to contact me. I love to
chat.

Hello
I recently found I think my gggrand parents in the
1880 census. Their names are Henry and Mary E Cole
according to the census. They were both born in
Maryland and in 1880 they were 53 and 49 years old
with three children Mary E 20, William A 15, and
Carroll C 3. If anyone may have a link I would love

I spoke with the genealogy librarian at the Kurth Memorial Library in Lufkin,
Texas, a few days back and she found some interesting information on my Cole
family. Even though my Great Grandfather Cole died in July of 1917(I had
originally been given 1904 as his death date, from my dad) in an auto
accident in Port Arthur, Texas, that was front page news. He was not
originally from Texas or Alabama(which he'd travelled through and there met
my Great Grandmother Willie Mattie (BUT another interesting fact I'd found
out on the SSDI about her : her soc. sec. application was filed in Oklahoma
of all placed !!) and soemtime around 1900/1904 they moved to Texas.
Now.....what I'm looking for is in Pennsylvania !!!!!!!!
We found out that Great Grandpa Cole's parents were actually out of
Pennsylvania !!! Their names are : R.H. & Mary Cole. Does anyone...anyone
out there have any connection to these two Cole's in Pennsylvania say, right
around 1860(the year my G-Grandpa was born)? I'm pretty certain that at
least that year they were still there. Also, I'm not sure where in
Pennsylvania to look. Any ideas on where/what county I might look in for
Cole's in general in Pennsylvania?
TIA

that states that his parents were Edward COLE b. abt. 1769 in KY and Eleanor

The only info I have about this family is from Washingto Co., IL Anything

Dear Coles,
I hope you received the GA resolution that I recently emailed to you
concerning Jacob and Winiford Cole.
I have a question for you about the children of William J. Cole and Susan
Gardner. How do we know that Albert, Franklin, and Hiram were children of
theirs. In my notes I have Hiram Cole as having died in the CW, but he
obviously didn't die because he is listed here with his wife Luvisa/Larisa
Bence/Benson. Now, I think some of the Wynns married Bensons and that may
be the connection here. But how did we come to add those 3 children to the
list of children for WJ Cole and Susan? I don't have any notes on that. I
left my Cole book at work. WEre they listed in WJ Cole's will? I don't
recall that. Help me here:)

Hello all,
I am tracing my family of David and Lydia Cole nee Gostling who were married
in Lamas Norfolk England in 1850. David and Lydia and their two sons
arrived in Australia in 1852 on the ship Helen.
David's parents were William and Mary Cole nee Coleman who were married in
1815 at St.Swithins Church in Norfolk.
Any connections please let me know.
Lorene
I have made some progress on my brick wall William Cole. He was my gg
grandfather in Anderson County and Knox County, Tennessee. He was the
husband of Vesta Clay England, and father of four daughters: Cordie, Ida,
Sallie, and Mollie. Sallie Jane Cole was my g grandmother who married my g
grandfather Alva Edward Peters. My g grandmother was not a Sarah Sallie.
She was just a Sallie.
William Cole married Vesta Clay England 5 Dec 1865 in Anderson County,
Tennessee. From this date, I suspect that he may have been a returning
Civil War soldier. There are numerous William Coles for whom I have found
Civil War records, but none of whom I can specifically identify as my
William Cole. I may well have looked at his military record without
realizing it was him.
Cordie Cole and Ida Cole were born in 1868 (twins), Sallie Cole was born in
1870, and Mollie Cole was born in 1873. The 1900 census says that Vesta
Clay England had borne five children of whom four were still living. So she
may well have borne a child in 1866/1867 who died and for whom there are no
records. Or she may have borne the fifth child after 1873. Because there
are no records for the fifth child, I just dont know for sure.
In the 1880 census, Vesta was a widow. From this plus the date of Mollies
birth, I conclude that William died 1873/1880. Also in the 1880 census,
Vestas daughters Cordie and Mollie were living with her in Knox County,
Tennessee. Her daughters Ida and Sallie were living with relatives in
Anderson County, listed as servants. There is an oral family tradition of
Cordie also living as a servant as a young girl, but if so it must have been
after 1880. From all this I conclude that Vesta was extremely poor, and
inherited nothing from William Cole when he died.
I have long believed that my William Cole family was missed in the 1870
census (but see below). I long ago checked every Cole family that is listed
in a head of household index for the 1870 Tennessee census, whether the head
of the household was listed as William or not. I checked for Cole, Coal,
Coale, Coals, Coales, and Kohl. My Cole family is not in any indexed census
entry under any of those spellings.
For a variety of reasons (including the 1880 census), I have long believed
that the family of my William Cole lived in Knox County rather than living
in Anderson County where William and Vesta were married. And I think some
or all of Williams daughters were born in Knox County rather than in
Anderson County. I definitely think of them as an Anderson County family.
But I frequently have to chase my Anderson County families across county
lines into Knox, Loudon, Roane, and Morgan Counties. So I have been looking
at Knox County tax records.
When I find my Anderson County families in Knox County, it always seems to
be in the west end of Knox County. District 10 where Vesta Clay England was
living in the 1880 census was in the west end of Knox County. Heres a very
rough map of the west end of Knox County in the 1870/1880 timeframe, with
districts 9, 10, 11, and 19 being in Knox County.
Roane Anderson
----------------------
| Dist.9 | Dist.19 |
Loudon |-----------|----------|
| Dist.10 | Dist.11 |
----------------------
Blount
As an example of how this works (and for those of you who may be familiar
with Knox County, Tennessee), the Concord community is in District 10.
There is much more of Knox County to the east of this picture. Similarly,
there is much more of Anderson County to the east of this picture. But my
Anderson County families lived in the southwest corner of Anderson County,
close to Roane, Anderson, and Loudon Counties. So this picture reflects
where they lived.
Districts 9 and 19 of Knox County are separated from Districts 10 and 11 by
Beaver Ridge. The boundary between Anderson County and District 9 of Knox
County is the Clinch River. The boundary between Blount County and District
10 of Knox County is the Tennessee River. The Clinch River flows into the
Tennessee River a bit west of this picture.
For those of you familiar with the Knox County area, Kingston Pike goes east
and west right through the middle of Districts 10 and District 11. Kingston
Pike was already there on old, old maps and was the route taken by General
Longstreet in his attack on Knoxville in the Civil War. Kingston Pike
splits at the Loudon County line, with one branch going to Nashville and the
other branch going to Chattanooga. For those of you not familiar with the
Knoxville area, Kingston Pike was the road that was immortalized in the The
Ballad of Thunder Road.
Here are several years of west Knox County tax data on the Coles.

There was a James L. Cole in District 10 in 1871 and 1872. He appears to
have been the son of Thomas Cole and Margaret Tillery. Here is the Thomas
Cole family from the 1850 census.
15th Subdivision, Knox County, p.176, HN 1153, FN 1162
Cole Thomas 46 m w farmer TN
Margaret 54 f w TN
Sarah A. 21 f w TN
Letty M. 20 f w TN
Rebecca 15 f w TN
James L. 12 m w TN
Thomas Cole and Margaret Tillery were married 27 Sep 1827 in Knox County,
Tennessee.
Heres the Thomas Cole family in Knox County in 1860 (this is from an all
names index rather than being a true transcription). James L. Cole was
still living at home.
Cole Thomas 52
Margaret 66
Sarah A. 32
Lutitia M. 28
Rebecca 24
James L. 22
As a part of chasing down these various Coles, I was going through the 1870
Knox County census by hand (without benefit of an index) for Districts 9,
10, 11, and 19. For all the names in the tax records, I was trying to find
the same names in the census. Much to my surprise I found the following:
Dist. 19, Knox County, Tennessee, 20 Jun 1870, Beaver Ridge PO
p.339b, HN 70 FN 71
Coal William 23 m w farmer $300 $100 TN
Vesta 30 f w keeping house TN
Ida 1 f w TN
Corda 1 f w TN
So my William Cole was not missed by the census enumerator. He was missed
by the indexer. And remember that I long since checked the index for
spelling variations such as Coal.
There are several things about this census entry that are interesting.
So far, its the only census entry that I have found where I am sure I am
looking at my William Cole. It suggests that he was born about 1847. Vesta
was born in 1840, so I would have guessed that William would have been
older.
I have looked at several William Coles born about 1847 in the 1850 and 1860
Tennessee censuses, but so far I have not found a William Cole whom I can
say for sure is mine. So I still dont know who his parents were. But it
almost certainly was not the Thomas Cole who was living in Knox County.
Thomas might have been Williams uncle, but surely Thomas was not Williams
father.
For another thing, when I was looking at the tax data and had not yet found
Williams 1870 census entry, I would have sworn on a stack of bibles that
the William Cole who owned land in District 19 was not mine. I couldnt
picture a man who owned land leaving his widow so destitute that she had to
farm out her daughters as servants. But the 1870 census entry clearly
indicates that William owned land worth $300.
Here are some more 1870 Knox County census entries of interest.
Dist. 10, p.186, HN 74, FN 74, 17 Aug 1870, Campbell Station PO
Mabery George 47 m w farmer 25000 10000 TN

Cole James 28 m w farmhand NC
Washington Thomas 18 m m farmhand TN
Larue Margaret 20 f w house keeper TN
Deford Mary 20 f w house keeper TN

I believe this was the James and James B. Cole from the tax lists. Note
that he was born in North Carolina. I dont know if or how he fits in with
Thomas Cole, nor with my William Cole.
Dist. 10, p.187b, HN 90 FN 90, 18 Aug 1870, Concord PO

Catharine 36 f w TN
Mary 13 f w TN
David 12 m w TN
Nancy 10 f w TN
Rosa 7 f w TN
Jordan 4 m w TN
Lucy 1 f w TN
This one is a complicated mess. George Cole age 38 from the census
certainly seems to be the same George Cole who was in the tax lists. I
dont know if or how he fits in with any of the other Coles. Georges wife
was Elizabeth Key. So it appears as if George Cole was living with his
father-in-law and mother-in-law David Key and Nancy Bright. But Elizabeth
Key was the daughter of James Key and his wife Elizah. I dont research the
Key family, but Im guessing that since Elizabeth Key was not the daughter
of David Key, she must have been his niece.
Martha age 45 was the head of house for house number 91, but her surname was
not listed. I assume from the way that the census is laid out that her
surname was Cole. Before she married, Martha was Martha M. Key, daughter of
the aforementioned David Key and Nancy Bright. She married first Warren J.
Hyden. The four Hyden children were Martha Keys children with Warren J.
Hyden. But Martha M. Key Hyden married second William Cole 29 Oct 1867 in
Knox County, Tennessee.
Its hard to know for sure what happened. But it looks for all the world to
me that Martha M. Key Hydens second husband William Cole was probably about
her age, that he died before the 1870 census, and that the William Cole age
24 living with the family was probably the elder Williams son from a
previous marriage.
If youve been keeping score, that makes for three William Coles: 1) the
hypothetical older William Cole who married Martha M. Key Hyden, 2) the
William Cole age 24 who was living with his apparent step mother Martha M.
Key Hyden, and 3) my William Cole age 23 who was living with his wife Vesta
Clay England and their two oldest daughters. And I still dont know how all
this fits together.
I have found a 1869 deed, James H. Cox to William Cole in District 19 of
Knox County. This was surely my William Cole since he owned land in
District 19 in the 1870 census. However, the deed was for 50 acres and the
tax list says 30 acres. I have also found an 1871 lawsuit for my William
Cole where he was sued for a $500 debt. The lawsuit does not say so, but
the debt was probably the note on his land. That may explain why Vesta was
so destitute after William died.
The 1869 deed says that my William Coles land was along Plum Creek and
Beaver Ridge, and also ran against the Ball Camp line. From this
description, I can tell almost exactly where it was. Plum Creek flows
through a gap in Beaver Ridge from District 11 into District 19.
Immediately after flowing through the gap, the creek is at the Ball Camp
community where I think there was a campground, probably where revival
meetings were held. There is a church and a cemetery. To run along the
ridge and the creek, Williams land had to be pretty much in sight of the
church and the cemetery.
There are numerous oddities in the tax data. Why did a William Cole own 99
acres in District 19 in 1868? I can find no corresponding deed, neither
buying nor selling. Why did the 1871 tax list refer to William Cole
heirs? My William couldnt have died before 1873. Why didnt the William
Cole who owned land in District 19 also have a poll? And there are probably
other oddities that I havent noticed yet.
As always, any help would be appreciated.

Hi Barb,
Couldn't get this thru to you using your email address, even with 'special' instructions. Perhaps I didn't do properly. Tho't I'd try to get this to you thru the list.
I have a Charles Cole born NY in 1803. I am looking for his (and his siblings') father. Could you give me some descendants' names so I could see if there might be a connection?
Thanks so much.

his wife Judith Rawls. Some of their children were born in NC, Anson
County, and some in GA. Does anyone have info on this family?
