I continue to look for William Cole b. about 1847 in Tennesse. My latest
candidate is from Hawkins County, Tennessee.
In the 1850 Hawkins County census were three Cole families living next to
each other whose heads of household appear to be two brothers and their
father. The apparent father was Richard Cole age 60 and his wife Margaret
age 64. The apparent sons were Martin age 34 and James age 39.
Martin's wife was Elizabeth age 26. James' wife was Jane age 22.
Martin and James both had a son named Richard, ages 9 and 2 respectively.
Martin and James both had a son named George, ages 6 and 12 respectively.
Martin and James both had a son named William, ages 4 and 10 respectively.
It is the William age 4, s/o Martin and Elizabeth who was the right age to
have been my William Cole.
The families appear again in the 1860 census in Hawkins County. My William
Cole was married in 1865 in Anderson County, Tennessee and was enumerated in
the 1870 census in Knox County, Tennessee. He died before 1880.
Does anybody recognize these Hawkins County families?
Jerry Bryan

I have just updated my page about Sampson Cole and Lavinia Tompkins. Found
an interesting story about him on line which places them firmly in San Saba
County, Texas in 1864, along with Sampson's brother Cole.
http://www.usgw.org/Saban_Thompson/TompkinsLavinia-ColeSampson.htm
Stories are on the page, with sources listed. I still cannot locate them on
any 1860 census.
Still searching for Lavinia Tompkins brother Joseph and his wife Celia
Cole - cannot locate what happened to them after 1850 in Burleson County
Texas.
Have also found three Tompkins strays in Texas. Perhaps someone on line can
help identify them:
Isaac Tompkins, born in MO in 1851. Living in Stephens County, Texas in
1880 with family (mother Nancy, born KY age 64, is living with him. A few
households away in Stephens County is a George Tompkins, age 38 born MO with
family. Presume an older brother of Isaac????? Both men say their father
born Virginia and mother born Kentucky.
There is also a story in Stephens County about a B.J. Thompkins and a Geo
Thompkins who fought some Indians in 1873. Presume the George is the one
above, any ideas on who the B.J. might be?
I hope to make the trip this spring early from West Texas to Lee County
Texas where Sampson Cole's mother, Mary Brown Cole is buried. Will make
photos available when I do.
Hope this finds everyone well and happy for the holidays and New Year.

Dear Friends in DE., PA. or even NJ. I am searching for information on
the Knights of Pyhtias or for a photo of my mother's first husband:
SAMUEL EDWARD COLE who was Chancellor-Commander in July 1907 the Osceola
Lodge in Newark, DE. Lodge #5 was the last surviving lodge in DE. and
became attached to the state of PENNA. when the Domain of Delaware
surrendered its charter. It is still in existence and is being
administered by the Grand Sec'y. of Penna. He is Donald H. Grant at 25
S. Morton Ave., in Morton, PA. Anyone who can provide me with a photo
of my mom's first husband will be a friend for life and I will gladly pay
for any costs involved. Mr Cole died in Newark, DE. in 1940 and is buried
in Pleasant Hill MD., Methodist Cemetery. Thank you.

In late 1998 I was in contact with George Cole, descendant of Ambrose Cole
(Jonathan5, Jonathan4, Benjamin3, Hugh2, James1). Does anyone know how I can
contact him?

While searching for lost Cole relatives in the 1850 census of Trigg Co, Ky,
I found a Mariah Cole age 19, born Ky with possible son Charles Bristow age
1 born TN living in what looks like a rooming house or hotel with nine other
people of differing last names and occupations. They were listed in house
and family no. 23 with a head of household named James D Searcy.
What caught my attention was that she was the only Cole listed in that
county and I thought that if someone was looking for her she might have been
out of place and the searching party might never look there.
I am looking for a William Cole b NC with wife Mary Banks Cole b TN, both
age 23 in the 1850 census. Any hits on this please contact me. They might be
listed under other variations of spellings like Coal, Coe, Kohl.

ANNIE ROB STURDIVANT, 100, of Covington, retired teacher from Tipton
County Schools after 36 years, died Wednesday (December 25, 2002) at
Baptist Memorial Hospital-Tipton in Covington. Services will be at 2 p.m.

Charleston Cemetery. She was a Sunday school teacher for Charleston
Baptist Church. Mrs. Sturdivant, the widow of Grover Lee Sturdivant,
leaves a sister, Mildred Sorrell of Cordova, and a niece who cared for
her, Dorothy Byrd of Somerville.
Annie Rob was a wonderful woman. I meet her three times. Once at the

I seem to have a brick wall with my husband's 2nd great grandfather. I'd
like to know who his parents and siblings were, where was he born in
