Does anyone have information on ancestry of George L. Cole or his wife Sarah
M. Hays of Grant Co., Indiana? They were married 28 Sept. 1904 and had a son
Edwin Cole. I am hoping to tie one of them into the James family. Any leads
appreciated.

I have a George Cole..b. bef. 1785 Son of Joseph COLE and Elizabeth Petty.
Unfortunately that is about all I have on this George. Two generations later
I have a Jesse William Cole b. in Hardin Co. KY. and from there the family
migrated up to southern Indiana around the 1850's.
I know that is not much help but may be a connection some where along the
line.

Searching for information on William Cole found in First District of the 1850 Orange County, NC census at the age of 59 and listed as a farmer. William is found with these people in his household, Caroline Cole age 18, Nancy Jeffreys age 30, Betsy Jeffreys age 10, and Ellen Cole age 59. Would like to find a link in the Coles and Rhodes families in Orange County as my family of Rhodes live next door. Also could anyone tell me where First District would be at today. Hello to all COLE researchers. I am researching the family of my 4th great grandfather, William COLE. The information I have on him says he was born about 1799, apparently in Virginia. He married an Eliza _____, and she was born about 1805. They lived in Wyoming County, Virginia (now West Virginia) during the 1850 census. They had at least 6 children, as follows: Thomas (b. abt. 1829 he m. Jane_____), William Harrison (b. abt. 1834 he m. Nancy _____-my ggg grandparents), Joseph (b. abt. 1836), Bartlet (b. abt. 1839), Peter (b. abt. 1842) and Mary (b. abt. 1843). I have no other info on this generation, except for William Harrison.
William Harrison and Nancy had at least one child (maybe more?) named James Peter (my gg grandfather). He was born Mar. 12, 1860 in Mingo County, Virginia (now West Virginia) and married Lyda BLANKENSHIP (b. Oct. 19, 1864 d. Jan. 1916).
James Peter died May 1931 and had 3 children with Lyda: Eppson (also called Epp, b. Jan. 27 1889 in Mingo Co. West Virginia, d. Jan 25, 1960 in Wyoming Co. West Virginia - my great grandfather), Bartley D. (unsure of b., he m. Bertha _____) and Tennessee (unsure of b., she m. James H. BLANKENSHIP).
Any one having any information on any of these lines, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am wondering if anyone in the areas of Harwinton or Waterbury does any
lookups or research. My grandfather, Roy Edson Cole, was born in Harwinton
Dec. 9, 1879, but a birth certificate cannot be located. My g grandfather,
Edson L. Cole, lived in Harwinton at the time of Roy's birth and the birth of
another son in 1877 who died after one day. Edson had several more children.
I also have land records of two mortgages from Lorenzo D. Cole, formerly from
Harwinton, CT. The first mortgage is dated May 11, 1863, and recorded in
Harwinton Land Records, Vol. 19, pg. 22. The second mortgage is dated
April 4, 1876, and recorded in Harwinton Land Records, Vol.20, pg. 294. These
were foreclosed on by the bank against Edson L. Cole and four other people. I
don't know how Lorenzo is related to Edson...father or uncle maybe?
My main interest is finding birth or death records for Edson and Lorenzo and
to find out the relationship between them. Can anyone help or lead me in the
right direction?
Thanks for reading my information. I am located Next to Ft. Myers, FL, in
case anyone needs the same kind of help.

Jerry,
I haven't read your posting completely, but I have a lot of Virginia
Coles at my site, including several Williams, one of which was born in
Tn. Didn't check out the dates. Go to my site, below. Put Cole,
William in the search box. You will find all of them at one time and
can click on each one for info. I also have a Sampson.

I can't help in your immediate quest but
there were Coles in Sullivan County TN
(then in NC) from the late 1770s until
about 1800, when most of them scattered,
many moving to Wilson County in middle
TN. Among them was a Sampson Cole, who
bought land in Sullivan in 1799. His
given name was from his mother, Ruth
Sampson, who married Charles Cole, son
of my ancestor John Cole (c 1669-c
1746). The line had its roots in
Baltimore MD. See my database at

I would like to put this thread to rest, but I think I found the Crawford
wives of Samson David Cole.
In the 1850 census, Sampson David Cole was living in HN 413 in Knox County,
Tennessee with his first wife Eliza C. Anderson. Two houses away in HN 415
was Hugh F. Crawford and his wife Rebecca Forgey. Two of their children
were Martha J. Crawford and Nancy I. Crawford. The ages work, so it seems
extremely likely that these were Sampson's second and third wives.

This is a followup on Sampson David Cole of Knox and Anderson Counties,
Tennessee. I previously posted the 1850 and 1880 census entries for the
family. After much diligent searching, I cannot find the family in the 1860
census. They are simply not listed in state wide indexes for 1860, neither
for Tennessee nor for Virginia. However, I did find the 1870 census entry
for the family in Knox County, Tennessee as follows.
3rd Dist., p.108, HN 105, FN 105, 16 Sep 1870, Knoxville PO
Cole S.D. 56 m w farming 2750/6300 TN
Nancy J. 39 f w keeping house TN
William L.? 18 m TN
Eliza C. 15 f TN
Joseph L. 13 m TN
Rebecca A. 13 f TN
John F. 10 m TN
Samual A. 7 m TN
James A. 6 m TN
Thomas L. 4 m TN
Laura J. 3 f TN
Evaline 1 f TN
I believe Sampson David Cole was married three times. None of the children
of his first wife Eliza C. Anderson were still at home in 1870. I believe
William, Eliza, Joseph, Rebecca, and John were children of his second wife
Martha Jane Crawford. I believe Samual, James, Thomas, Laura, and Eveline
were children of his third wife Nancy Jane Crawford. William, Eliza C., and
Joseph L. are "new" in the sense that they did not appear in the 1850 census
(not born yet) nor in the 1880 census (apparently already moved out).
Notice that Sampson David Cole continues to be shown as born in Tennessee.
I still think the Virginia ancestor had to be a generation or two further
back.
The listing for William L. Cole is of special relevance to the search for my
William Cole. My William Cole would have been married with two children in
the 1870 census, although I cannot find the census entry for the family.
Also, he probably would have been at least 25 years old, more likely at
least 30 years old. So the existence of a som of Sampson D. Cole named
David who was only 18 years old and not married in 1870 tells me that
Sampson David Cole is not my line.
