Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
The recent merger of RootsWeb's GenConnect Boards [which we have used
extensively] with Ancestry's Family History Boards was accompanied by a break
in the automatic forwarding of messages to the list. After several days of
reviewing these messages, I've found nothing I considered appropriate for
forwarding.
The new system concentrates on queries, which are well-served by a message
board but ill-suited to the list because the thread is broken by the
forwarding process. The GenConnect boards [obits, wills, etc.] that have
been used in conjunction with mailing lists and websites have taken a back
seat and there have been NO new posts to any of my boards in these categories.
Yes! I'm still the administrator of both the list and the query board.
There's no territorial squabble here --,just two resources with different
missions. The only significant change is that I'm now the administrator of
the entire suite of boards, not just the queries.
I'm not trying to chase anyone off of this list -- but it has become obvious
that the much-touted ability to connect the two systems has been lost. If
you joined the list because it provided a single source of both messages
posted to the list and messages posted to the GenConnect Board, you need to
know that this is no longer the case.
I will keep you posted about the developments in the new system. Please bear
with us.

Greetings List: Searching for information on the family of Mathew Cole
and Catherine Unknown. Mathew was supposed to have been born in MD, but
later found in Lee County, VA., and surrounds as early as 1794. (Mathew b.
1774 per later census records.) Either Mathew or Catherine is supposed to be
1/2 Cherokee.... Mathew and Catherine had a number of children (list may
not be complete or correct): John, b. 1800; Lucy, b. 1802; Mathew, Jr., b.
1804; Charles, b. 1810; Barbara, abt. 1811; Abbott G., abt. 1812; William,
b. 1812; Nancy, b. 1820; Aaron, b. 1823.
Mathew first purchased land in Lee County, Va., in 1807; sold land, 1847,
moved to Owsley Co., KY., where he appears on the census in 1850.
Any information regarding Mathew or Catherine Cole very much appreciated.

Hello List,
Searching for ties to William Cole (G-G-Grandfather).
William Cole and Margaret (Johnston) Cole had two children:
John Thomas Cole, b. 1854 in Quaker City, Guernsey Co., Ohio, sent to
Illinois at age 7.
Jane (Cole) Householder, b. 1860, ?
William Cole joined Army in 1861. Possibly died in Civil war. Margaret
remarried in 1862. There are numerous William Cole records in the Civil War
from all states around 1861.
Family theory that our Cole line is Pennsylvania Dutch. I am researching
census records mainly in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania.
Can any of you connect to my William Cole? Sincerely, Denise Cole, Illinois
Look for some very inventive ways to spell an originally German name, for
example:
KOHL, KHOL, KOOL, COOL, COAL, COLE, COAL are just a few of the ones
you'll find in Pennsylvania and other states they eventually settled in.
Pennsylvania Dutch is just another way of spelling and pronouncing
Pennsylvania Deutsch, as is also Pennsylvania Deitch. We
english-speaking people have marvelous imaginations when it comes to
spelling each other's names. Take a good look at how your junk mail is
addressed to see some of the ways your own name gets mangled.

I have always heard my father say that we were decendats of French/Canadian
ancestors. And indeed, I did find a Joseph Cole listed in the
Kinston/Lenoir country census of 1880 staing his age at 46 and born in
Canads. His spouse is listed as Sarah and age 33, of French extraction.
I cannot tie this Cole to my ancestors, but I am still looking.

Dear Alienor and Listers,
Point well taken. I am not lumping all my "Coles in one basket" but ready to
try new methods to find my personal histories. It takes a brave heart to be prepared
to consider every possibility. If I am Melungeon, I want to know it. I have very
little proof in many grandmother lines, assumed Scotts-Irish without proof, physical
characteristics, always included in surname lists and always seem to bump against a
"code of silence".
A good reference article is:

I found a Jesse Cole that almost matches my Jesse Cole. I have encountered
him several times. Each time the researcher cannot tell me the source of
the information. This time the researcher knows where he got his
information, but it is not a primary or secondary record that is the basis.
Can anyone on the list identify the research and the source of the research
for the Jesse Cole in the message below? I would really like to find that
the information is correct and connect with this Jesse. Would make my
research so much more complete. We have documented his life to the hilt
after he entered Texas in May 1835. Please email me if you can shed any
light on this matter.

We will probably receive a few more posts on this line as subscribers catch
up on e-mail and browsers-through-the-archives find the thread, but here are
some additional sources I've found:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/
Using the advanced search option, for James Cole and a Rentfroe spouse, I
found 10 databases that included them [there may be more by the time you try
it.] Comparing these databases was VERY interesting, because some were posted
by COLE researchers and others by RENTFROE researchers. I strongly suspect
that more might turn up using a search for RENTFROE spelling variants.
http://genforum.genealogy.com/
Go to the COLE forum, and search for RENTFROE. You'll find a number of
interesting messages regarding this line.
Our GenConnect Board also had a number messages pertaining to this line, but
with the merge with ancestry.com boards the system is in such a state of flux
that I can't give you a reliable, direct URL. You can go to:
http://boards.ancestry.com/
and search for COLE boards. Then click on BOARDS>SURNAMES>COLE.
I've found individual FTM sites on
http://genealogy.com/
that pertained to this family, although I haven't been able to maintain a
connection long enough to do a new search.
It's not all cut-and-dried, though. If you search the LDS site:
http://www.familysearch.com/
for James COLE and Mary RENTFROE, you'll find an ancestral file with three
possible sets of parents for James!
Information provided by members back when I was maintaining the COLE
database, suggests that this James COLE was the son of James, who was the son
of Stephen COLE and Elizabeth TEMPLE. I do NOT have proof of this assertion.

I am looking for the parents of Frank C. Cole, born July, 1846 in the Villa Rica, GA area. He married Mary L. Swafford (she was the daughter of Moses Swafford and Nancy Odom) in 1872 - their first child was Newton "Newt" Franklin Cole. Other children are John C. Cole, Rufus S. Cole, Caldonia Cole, William Arthur Cole, Moses Lonzo Cole, Virginia Cynthia Cole, Clementine S. Cole, and Mary Cole. They appear on the Paulding Co, GA census in 1880. This bunch migrated to Union Parish, LA around 1890. I know that Franklin is a Cole family name. Child Rufus migrated to Oklahoma with wife and 3 children aound 1906. Brother Moses eventually followed. Caledonia moved to California with her husband, John Raley. Frank Cole died in Union Parish on 17 July 1914. Anyone have any clues? This has been my brick wall for years.

According to information gathered in the early days of this list, Stephen
COLE was the brother of the James COLE I just called, but I have less
information on his line. [No dates, for example, except estimate of the
mid-to-late 1700s for the marriage and birth of their children].
Stephen married Nellie/Elener BOUNDES and they had at least three children:
William Temple COLE, who married Hannah ALLISON.
Stephen COLE, who married Phebe ALLISON.
Rhoda COLE, who married Joseph Stephens.
Major COLE, who married James Dillard.
"Major" is a rather unusual name for a girl, so I've wondered whether this
might be a transcription error.
If you belong to the downline of Stephen COLE and Nellie/Elener BOUNDES,
please chime in!

I had great fun last night. I went to WorldConnect and put in the surname

people who only had that surname married to someone in their line. I was
able to fill in lots of blanks with names, dates, locations and parents and

Yes! WorldConnect not only provides a convenient means for other researchers
to find us, but is much easier than exchanging reports or GEDCOMs. If you
haven't yet discovered it, by all means browse there for a while:

I chose the COLE/RENTFROE line for our test case for several reasons -- one
being that I found TEN WorldConnect databases that included this family. If
this experiment of collecting pieces of the puzzle by family line proves
successful, WorldConnect will be a key element.
