Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
First:
I want to express my appreciation for the way our members have followed the
rules against posting messages regarding virus alerts, rumors, hoaxes, etc.
Second:
I'm keeping my promise about posting an alert myself, whenever a significant
threat arises.
There's a nasty new one on the scene, which travels through attachments. You
can NOT get it through any RootsWeb list because the RootsWeb server does not
allow attachments -- but I'm posting a warning here because you CAN get it
through e-mail from another listmember.
You can protect yourself, though, with one very simple measure: do NOT open
any attachments. Delete any attachment without opening it -- even if the
sender is someone you know. Perhaps, I should say "especially if the sender
is someone you know" -- because this new one does an excellent job of
mimicking regular e-mail messages.
Let's say a friend of yours has opened one of these attachments. It
immediately invades the computer's address book and attacks incoming mail.
When a message arrives from you, it automatically responds by quoting part of
your own message and adding an instruction to see the attachment. Because
it's automatic, your friend may be blissfully unaware of the problem.
Because you know and trust that person and it looks so much like a normal
message, you may open that attachment. If you do, though, your computer will
also be infected and you'll start spreading it to other friends.
Of course I realize that some of our members are computer-savvy, use
firewalls, and know all about screening incoming attachments [yes, I use
anti-virus software myself]. I certainly don't want to discourage anyone who
is already using or even considering such protective measures -- but in this
case the simple "do NOT open ANY attachments" is a precaution that should
protect even our newbies.
If you have any questions, please write to me offlist.

Scott,
This is a nice job. I see that you
published current people still alive. Question: Did you consider
information security, and privacy rights? Do the people included on the
list approve of the published list, and do they understand the consequences for
publishing information considered by many to be confidential.

I am going to post again in hopes that there is someone new that can
help. My files starts with Charles Cole who first shows up in Grayson
Co, Va in the 1794 tax lists. He married Elizabeth Stoneman. I don't
know where he was born ca 1761. I have a suspicion that his parents
were James Cole and Susanna Hanks from Wythe Co, Va, but can't find
proof. Does anyone have this Charles Cole. I have lots of descendants
at my site below.

I have in my notes a birth record:
Edw J. Cole b.Chanute, Neosho, KS 21 June 1897
father: J.D. Cole, 32 yrs old, Empl. by railroad
mother: May Campbell, 22 yrs old, American, 3rd child
I cannot find any additional information on any of these people in Neosho County. Edward J Cole is my grandfather, father of Willis E Cole b. 28 Feb 1928 in Lexington, Nebraska. Willis' mother was Nettie Margaret Stone.
I have found an Anna Campbell who was married to James O Cole but they are listed in the 1900 census in Chanute KS with 3 children, no Edward.
Anna had a sister named May but she married Caleb Ingle and they are also listed in the 1900 census.
There is a record on the LDS site of a J.D. Cole b.1862 Rocky Hill, Barren, KY, father John L Cole, mother Nancy.
Anyone have a connection to any of these people? I have more info on the ones who are apparently not related to me.
LaWanda
Judy Owens sent pictures of Madge, Ray, Clarence, and Earl Cole today. I
have posted them on the internet and you can view them at
http://www.townwebs.atfreeweb.com/childrenofstanleyandelizabethcole.htm. If
you would like to share your pictures of family members, please let me hear
from you!
Also, you can visit the Proctor Cemetery through pictures taken there last
year. Among other relatives, my great grandparents, Stanley Clarence Cole
and Elizabeth Clutts, rest in peace there. There is also an old Cole
Cemetery near Proctor. As I have been told, it is the probable location of
the graves of Speed Sr & America Snodgrass, and O C Cole & Paullina Bennett.

for sure (or not), let me know!

Hello -
Hoping someone can help me with my brick wall, my gg grandmother Sarah Elizabeth Cole Hanes. Born Rathbun, PA (Elk County) in November 1851 or 1854. She was born a Cole, but was raised/adopted by the Hanes/Haines family same area. Don't know if her parents died or? She was married to Joseph M. Friedl at Emporium, PA (Cameron County). Had nine children. Have received census info from Elk County showing a Sarah C. in a Haines household - not confident that it's her, but it's my only lead.
Would appreciate anyone's help/input - thanks in advance - Theresa

Hello Everybody,
My name is Michael Crump. I was fortunate enough for my grand mother to
write her "Memories of Long Ago" before she passed away. She covers a period
from about 1905 when she was 3 years old until 1912. In her opening
paragraph she talks about her family. Her mother was Rosina Cole. I would
love to share her stories with anyone who is interested in her life in
Islington, London at that time. I would enjoy hearing from anyone connected
to this family. I have just started my research on this side of the family
and dont have much additioanal information on the Cole side of the family. I
have included her opening paragraph below. If you would like to read the
other 6 pages or so please respond off list to remotemike(a)aol.com

Memories of Long Ago
By Doris Rosina Manley
I was born on the 27th March, 1902, somewhere in East Ham, London, Doris
Rosina Manley. My father was Hermann Edward Manley, A hairdresser/barber.
He had been apprenticed for five years to the barbering profession. My
mother was Rosina Cole. Her father was a well to do builder. His girls,
four of them, were all brought up as young ladies, never having to work.
They were Rosina (Rose my mother), Tiny (a nickname, I don't know her
Christian name), Lilly, and the youngest, Alice (nicknamed Birdie). Lilywas
married and had one daughter called Violet, whose father died of consumption
early on in his married life. Violet died of the same complaint at fifteen,
about 1911-12. Alice was married and had children, I forget how many. I
just remember them all coming to visit us. My dad had a younger brother,
Harry, and two sisters, Mary Ann, who never married and died about 1914-15;
and Edie who married a postman. I only knew him as Bill. They had two
daughters Elsie and Connie and later in life, I believe they had a son; but I
never saw him.
Does anyone have information on Dot Fox Cole, wife of William Dale Cole? She
died in 1918 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Andrews, Huntington Co.,
Indiana. I would like to know her birthplace and the names of her parents.
Do you know where they lived?
I am looking for information regarding a Fred Davis Cole, son of
Jesse
Anderson Cole. This is as far as I can get. I know the families of
Fred's
wife Irene Ella Wicker, but I can't find anything on Jesse Cole's
parents or
his wife Olive Hazel Campbell. Please help...
