The 1860 Clark County, Indiana Census lists my g-g-grandfather, Jonathan
Cole. The way the census lists him is exactly like this:
869 COLE, Jonathan 47 NC. Then it lists the members of his household. Does
anyone know if the NC after his name means he last lived in North Carolina or
that he was born there. Members of my family say that he was born in
Massachusetts. It is true, there are several Jonathan Coles from
Massachusetts, but I can't find a direct link to any of them and wonder if
I've been looking in the wrong places.
Thanks for your help.

Found my family tree sketched on a piece of paper (by my mother?)
spelling versions of the first names of Coles are different from what I'd
had before. So here goes:
Crine COLE (Holland)
married
Henrietta Van(der)vlete (Holland)
child:
Katie COLE (Holland)
Katie COLE
married
Milam Zegel
I the dates I have are:
Crine (or Kryn) COLE
(1830-1913)
Henrietta Vandervlete (or VanVliet)
(1833-1911)
Katie (or Kate) Cole
(1865 in NJ - 1920 in NJ)
Posting this in hopes someone might recognize a name. I don't know yet
if these spellings are correct.

My g-g-g-g-grandfather, Philip Cole, and his wife, Mary ??, had seven children. The oldest four were born in Gageborough/Windsor, MA between 1776 and 1783. Their names were Lucy, Philendra, Mary & Anna. Three younger children, Olive, Philip, and Ezra were born between 1785 and 1790 in Williamstown, Berkshire Co., MA.
This family later moved to Wells, VT then to
Litchfield, Herkimer Co., NY in 1796 then to
LeRay, Jefferson Co., NY in 1804 then to
Downey Twsp, London District, Canada West in 1842 then to
Berlin, WI in 1849 then to
Milton, Dodge Co, MN in 1864 then to
Battle Plain, Rock Co, MN in 1878 then to
Vegreville, Alberta, Canada in 1901 - and stayed put...finally!!
Is it possible that my Philip is the son of Israel Cole III and Remember Burgess? Someone out there has the answer I am certain. Would you be so kind as to share it with me?
Thanks a bunch, Randy Cole

LOL
Actually I have been researching my family for 4
months now using the internet and the local LDS
library. I have gone from 75 names in my database to
970. I haven't spent any money on my research until
two days ago when I spent 10 dollars to get some films
from the LDS library. I didn't even buy my Genealogy
software. I downloaded it for free from the LDS site.
Now, on to Cole stuff. Does anyone have access to the
Oneida Co, NY census records. I have a Gidion Cole
that I am trying to place. Let me know if you have
access to this census record and I will give you the
page numbers.
Thanks,
Gem

Hi Alan--I have 2 Coles to add to the Civil War roster
John M Cole and his brother Robert Cole of Ducktown, Polk, TN.
Sons of William L. Cole and Martha Ledford Cole
Both men served the Union and both returned home after the war.

I am not an authority on this, but from research it is apparent to me these
Black Dutch, Black Irish, Black German and all these with Black attached
came about in the 1500/1600's in the old countries because of the invasion
of Spaniards into these countries. I think these terms were common in the
old countries.
I feel these terms were not exclusive to the tri-racials in Appalachia.
Common sense tells us these people existed, with a darker complexion and
as stated this was a good cover up for trio-racial when times were being
made very rough on these people.
I don't think we can discount the fact that some of these folks in this
country labeled as Melungeons were in fact Black Dutch, Irish, German etc,
with a mix of other races.
We have had mixing of blood lines since time began.
Oleen
opolla(a)apex.net
Black Dutch is one of several terms for dark skinned people living in
Appalachia, especially in the large general area where Tennessee,
Kentucky, Virginia, and Noth Carolina converge.
These people preceded the English to North America.

BLACK DUTCH is also a term used for people from a certain part of Germany,
who had darker skin, hair & eyes. Some of these were my ancestors.
Some indian people claimed they were BLACK DUTCH to keep from being rounded
up and relocated. When Portaguese (I can't spell) laborers came into
America, many claimed they were BLACK DUTCH to supposedly make themselves
more "acceptable".

Mark,
In reference to your comment about using me as a source...
You certainly are welcome to use the information in any way you want. After
all, it is the history of your family as it is mine. Nonetheless, please,
understand that I am a collector of the reports of others. Many people,
both near relatives and distant cousins have contributed what you see on my
web site. However, I have not insisted on any proof and do post whatever I
am sent. If I get contradictory information, I make attempts to determine
the most plausible version of our history.
Although many serious genealogists consider this reckless, I consider it a
very successful way of gathering more information. Information attracts
information (and corrections). Moreover, as you know from personal
experience, it provides leads for new discoveries and direction in finding
documentation.
Equally important, I have made contact with about twenty distant cousins,
such as yourself, through my web site. Along with another ten near
cousins/relatives that are interested in ancestry we are reaching a total of
thirty. Our community of Cole cousins is becoming quite active. The
research findings that we share help cousins make advancements that they in
turn share, creating a momentum.
I am most appreciative of cousins such as yourself who are gracious with
their research and forward it to me for posting on An American Family,
making it available to all. I look forward to receiving your most recent
discoveries. You can be assured that almost thirty other descendents of
William Cole and Nellie Freeman will too! On behalf of all of us, thanks!

Do any of you have a COLE line in Lincoln Co., Oklahoma Territory? These
were the former Iowa and Sac & Fox Lands that were opened by the Run of
'91.
June Tron's family was in the southern part of the county.
Al Cole's and mine were just across the western border in Oklahoma County.
