Anyone have information on Dr. Clifford Cole, a minister of the Disciples of
Christ (Christian) Church? He and his wife Bessie Garton lived in Abilene,
Kansas in the early 1900s, later coming to Southern California, where he died
about 1964. He wrote a nationally syndicated column "Daily Pulpit" for many
years. He had two sons, Myron and Connor Cole, also clergymen. I want to
know if they tie into my Cole line.
Sarah Ann COLE, b 1855, ? death, married Wesley Scott JOHNSON ca 1855-1891,
then married William J. TOWNSEND (1848-prior 1920). Is Sarah the daughter of
Mark COLE found in the 1870 census? Sarah had 6 children with W.S. JOHNSON
and one with WJ TOWNSEND.

This thread started with "who was the U.S.S. Cole named for?", "what do we
know about him?", and "does anybody 'claim' him?" All legitimate questions
for genealogists, IMO.
Unfortunately, it has now wandered off-topic. I won't get into the matter
of who first pushed the envelope or who clearly crossed the line -- and am
not threatening to unsub anyone over what has been said so far.
But I AM reminding you that:
1. This is an international list.
2. Political discussions of ANY type are forbidden.
Please realize that something you may not consider political may be
perceived as such by others. So play it safe -- stick to genealogy.

This was just sent to me by a friend in the Navy. I cut and pasted it so
that you all don't have to deal with the forward header. Please pray for the
crew of the USS Cole. I know I wouldn't want to be where they are right now.
Best wishes to you all.

Surname: Cole
-------------------------
Our family tree goes to Andrew Cole, who married Mary McFarling. Am unable
to find birth and death dates. They had 5 children: William, Andrea, Abraham,
Sarah (Sally) and Catherine. Abraham is my g-g-grandfather.
Am looking for Andrew's father. All the information I have is the following:
Ambrose Cole (not Andrew's father) - lived and died in Saratoga Co., NY
and married (unknown first name) Martin at Greenfield, NY. They had two
sons, Johnathan and Edward. Edward had six sons: Ambrose Jr., James, Edward,
Henry, Calvin and Henry(?). At this point, there is a gap in the information
and the next information I have is on Andrew.
Is anyone able to help us fill the gap?
Does anyone have any information on a Isaac John Cole. I found him on the
Indiana census for Dearborn County in 1838. He married Elizabeth Moore in
Greene County and then divorced her (or she divorced him) some time after
1843. They had one son, David Crockett Cole, born 1843 in Greene County,
Indiana. I have been able to track Elizabeth but it appears that Isaac
vanished from the face of the earth. I have found several Isaac J. Coles on
various censuses but don't know which one he is.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Cole listers
James Riley Cole was my husband's 2nd great grandfather. We have not been able to discover who is parents were. He married Sarah Cole and we trace back to England via her. Anyone have any connections with the following?
JAMES RILEY COLE was born 1807 in Foster, Providence, RI, and died August 18, 1862. He married SARAH COLE August 21, 1830 in Foster, Providence, RI, daughter of EDWARD COLE and DEBORAH SHELDON. She was born April 29, 1813, and died January 21, 1887.
Notes for JAMES RILEY COLE:
He is mentioned in the will of his grandfather, James Cole. He is specifically identified as "my grandson James R. Cole" and he inherited from this grandfather "the bed and table and several chairs which were formerly called his Mothers property." The identity of his mother is unknown. The identity of his father is unknown.
Child of JAMES COLE and SARAH COLE is:
i. ITHEMAR OLNEY4 COLE, b. 1834, Scituate, Providence, RI; m. (1) ABBY M. ALDRICH, June 02, 1853, Foster, RI; m. (2) EMOGENE SHIPPEE, April 07, 1868, Foster, Providence, RI; b. November 08, 1850, RI; d. August 15, 1881; m. (3) ELLEN CHENEN, February 11, 1873, Providence, RI; b. 1851, Ireland.
Hi Cole searchers,
I am looking for information on John Henry Cole. He married Margaret
Elizabeth
Bridges bn.Ala 10 dec 1854. They had my ggrandmother Eula Ann Cole in
Hunt County Texas 7 april 1876. One census said John Henry was from
Ohio,
but recently a cousin said he was from Mississippi, so I'm not sure. Any
help
on him would be appreciated. Thanks,

John, Your friend said it all. We too are on station and I will be
going
over there in the morning to provide a lunch. I wanted to grill steak
for them on their deck, but there is still too much oil and fuel, not
to
mention every square foot of deck is now their living space, to set up a
grill. Their requests have been simple, hot food, cold drinks and dry
coveralls and boots. The ships here are all taking turns doing their
laundry and cooking their meal. The Cole's crew has been offered
repeatedly to take R&R on another ship but most have refused. They
refuse to leave their ship. The details of their shipmates having to be
cut from the bulkheads and descriptions and photos of the description
have
filtered to our ship. It is amazing that more were not killed. It is
equally amazing that it is still afloat. The keel is ripped apart and
at
present cannot even be towed to open water to be placed on a dry-dock
vessel. The #1 engine room is flooded solid, as is AUX 1. The Messdecks
deck is now pressed against the overhead. The entire galley was pushed
to
the starboard side and the equipment is unrecognizable. This is where
many crew members died. The ship was very nearly lost. They are truly
heroes. We all have a lot to do to save this vessel but the crew of the
Cole has endured the brunt of it so far. I have vowed myself and my
department to offer any comfort, large or small that we are capable of
providing, to the Cole. None of my guys have once complained and all
have
volunteered to help in any way.
The Cole's Suppo was injured and flown home. The disbo is now
running
things. I will assess his needs when I go over. The Suppo on the Hawes
has been controlling the efforts but now that the Tarawa is on station
they seem to be taking the rains, but I think I can at least provide him
some insight. Let there be no doubt that this is a hostile land. It
took
days before we were even allowed to enter territorial waters and still
we
are heavily restricted in flights and must maintain a constant vigil
against additional hostile actions. The Yemen government is still not
being very helpful and we are trying to place all personnel onboard the
ships that are currently staying at the two hotels in town. The Cole's
crew remains emotionally and physically drained I'm told. So, since you
have experienced Navy life, try relay to those back home the sacrifices
we
make, hardships we endure, and the dangers we face in an effort to keep
those Stars and Stripes flying high over a ship 10,000 miles from home.
Take care and sleep well knowing the US Navy is on watch tonight, but
say
a prayer for the 250 members of the Cole who must wake tomorrow to
another
day of fighting for their ship.

Hi, Folks --
I guess it's a hazard of the computer age, but the serpent in the

If I've promised to do/get something for you, let me know.

Hi List
I need some help here!! I have Mary Foxwell being married to Hugh Cole,
Mary's parents are Richard Foxwell and Ann Shelly, Ann's birth abt.
1605. Ann's parents are Robert Shelly and Judith Garnett, from
ancestry.com it states that Judith came on the Francis in 1634 when she
was 26 years old, which means her birth would have to be 1608. That has
got to be a mistake, does anybody know the correct dates?
Thanks
Becky

Hello, Ann --
We have ancestors in both Massachusetts and Maine, and I have adopted the
convention of referring to places in the portion of Massachusetts that later
became Maine as "Maine", even though Maine hadn't become a state. I find this
very convenient. If you check into the LDS genealogical records, such as the
<familysearch.org> web site, you'll find that the Mormon Church has done the
same thing. If you disagree with my convention, that's your privilege.

Bruce,
The question, I believe was:
"Why would this be listed in both places?"
If both places were one place and then both (later)
States preserved the records of the one state, in certain cases, than that
would be your explanation.
It might also be explained by the circumstance that the or a prominent
person's legal residence was in, say, Maine but died and/or was buried in,
say, Massachusetts?
Or it might be two guys with the same name. <grin>
