I have this quote from a genealogical selection of a newspaper in Dec. 9, 1887:
"John Adams son of Gen. Frank Adams writes that he is working in a store in Southwestern Nebraska owned by his brother, R.O. Adams and Charles S. Cole, son of John Cole of Wells Twp., Jefferson Co., Ohio."
I'm drawing a blank. How can I research this in Nebraska?
Does anyone recognize the James T. COLE who made the Run of '91 and staked
his claim in Luther Township, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma Territory?
He got his patent in 1897, but I didn't find him living there on the 1900
census. The only clue I have as to his age is that he had to have been 21
by Sept. 23, 1891 to be eligible to file a claim. His place adjoined that
of Tolbert COLE, who did have a nephew named James, born in the late 1860s.
But not only is Tolbert's nephew unaccounted for -- I don't even have the
names of Tolbert's children [if any]. Tolbert was born in 1833, so was
certainly old enough to have a son as well as nephews eligible to
homestead. [And this family does tend to have cousins who bear the same
name.]
In 1900, Tolbert COLE was enumerated in nearby Deep Fork Township but I
don't have a copy of the entire census and may have thus missed James. An
undated ownership map shows James T. COLE had a quarter section 1 to 2
miles northeast of Tolbert's nephews Joseph D. & Wm. "Will" COLE. All were
descendant's of Obediah COLE, so for simplicity's sake I like to refer to
them as Obediah's line.
The catch here is that James T. COLE's place was also 1 to 2 miles
northwest of my own GGgrandfather, Wm. A. "Bob" COLE, Charles & Emerson
COLE. I believe Charles to have been Bob's first cousin and Emerson to be
Charles' son, but haven't been able to prove it. For simplicity's sake,
I call this John Henry's line [he was the grandfather of Bob & Charles].
There's no unaccounted for James COLE in John Henry's line -- so I think it
more likely that James T. COLE belonged to Obediah's line.
J.D., Will, Tolbert, & Bob all came to O.T. from near Neodesha, KS. The
two lines' migration patterns track back through KY & TN to the Carolinas.
Both lines have the oral tradition that they are related, but so far we
haven't been able to prove it.
["Cousin" Al -- hope you'll chime in here if I've skipped too much of the
narrative!]
I've posted more information about both lines on my Luther area study:

I am looking for the relations of Nelson COLE who was born in Duchess County,
NY. He married in St. Louis in 1852. From newspaper articles in St. Louis I
gather that he may have been orphaned or, at least, only one parent was
involved with his early life. Could he be related to your Frederick?

Looking for any relations of FREDERICK SMITH COLE, born 1810 in NY.
First known info is that Frederick S. Cole had a guardian, WILLIAM
WILEY, appointed in RENNSELAER Co. NY in 1825; both were "of Pittstown,
Renss. Co.",NY. In trying to determine if they were related, I have
discovered that William Wiley first was married to ANNA HERRICK &
secondly to her sister, LYDIA HERRICK, both daughters of AMAZIAH &
ANNANISA ADAMS HERRICK, who were at some time in DUTCHESS CO, NY and
later in Renss Co.,NY. About 1834, Frederick S. Cole married PHEBE
GORHAM, daughter of ISAAC GORHAM whose second wife (and Phoebe's
step-mother) was POLLY HERRICK, another daughter of Amaziah Herrick.
Frederick & Phoebe had children WILLIAM SANFORD COLE, ANN E. COLE and
EUNICE J. COLE. This Cole family left Lansingburg, Renss. Co. NY about
1855, moving to Marshall Co. Iowa. Frederick S. Cole died in Hardin Co.
Iowa in 1872.
I have information on Phebe Gorham's line but nothing on Frederick
Cole's ancestory. Anybody have any clues on Cole's in Renss. Co. NY in
this period? Was Frederick S. Cole related to a Wiley, Herrick or Smith
in Rensselaer or Dutchess Co. NY? Would appreciate any help you can
offer.

According to the census, Stephen Cole (born abt. 1784) was born in Kentucky
and was living in Floyd Co., IN as early as 1830. My information indicates
that he was married to Henrieta Wheeler, (born 1797) daughter of George
Wheeler. I have the name of one son, George Cole who was also born in KY
about 1818. George married Mary Jane Wright (born in 1823 in IN) daughter of
William Wright. Would appreciate any information.

Hi Jane

Giles and some in Lincoln Co., Tennessee. Tell me some of the names of siblings, parents or any thing and I can locate him easier,.

Their father was William Farrell Cole b.March 1848 mar. my g-
grandmother Melissa Jane "Jennie" Carlile she was born 5 Nov. 1873.
William Farrell had been married to Melissa "Hugh" Blow on 23 Dec 1968 in Giles Co., Tn. by S. M. Harwill M. G.

Then they waited about 12 or 14 years and had Clifton Taylor Cole in abt.1862.

He had to be related because all the Coles there were supposed
to have been related.
Have you looked at any census?

Hello Barbara!
I saw your post in the Cole forum on Coles in Giles County, TN. I'm soon going to start researching my Cole line there. Would you happen to have record of a Louis Houston Cole born 1860s or 1870s? At one point he lived in Minor Hill, TN.
Thanks!

Connie,
In the course of updating the 1908 book The Descendants of James Cole of
Plymouth, I have been in touch with numerous descendants of James Johnson
and Ann Cole. None of these researchers has yet found documented proof
that Ann's parents were Hugh Cole6 (Joseph5, Hugh4, Hugh3, Hugh2, James1)
and Sarah Bishop, but there is considerable circumstantial evidence that
she is their daughter. Off list I will send you more information. If
others are interested in this line, please let me know.
Of course if anyone does have documented proof, we will all be interested!
