Hello Ruby and List, thought I would go ahead and list the Coles &
others on the list of "heirs" to James Cole, deceased (he died in June
of 1907 apparently without a will, so the attorneys had to divide up his
property), this was done in October of 1907. What is interesting is
that my mother remembers that my great-grandmother (Matilda Cole,
daughter of James Hiram Cole, was contacted by an attorney about this
estate.) Ruby, I don't see the names you mentioned, but here goes...
The following people were listed as heirs to James Cole:
P. Mills (heirs of Sarah Cole)
Riley Patillo
Hestor Lewis
O.H. Stephenson
Martin Cole
Susan Singleton
Peter McDonald
J.C. Cole
J.W. Faulk (heirs of Aulda Cole)
Joshua Hayes
J.M. Singleton
Riley Cole (heirs of Absalom Cole)
C.W. Ratcliff
heirs of David Cole
Caswell Peveto
F. Walker
S.E. Richardson
Caroll Patillo
Ida Patillo
Johnie Cole
Si Cole
Mark Cole
Other notes in this file say that:
1) John Cole was a grandson of James Cole
2) Susan Singleton was a niece of James Cole
3) Hester Lewis was a niece of James Cole
4) Christopher Columbus Cole also had a stake in this estate
These certainly don't match the names of the family of my g-g-f, James
Hiram Cole, even though the date of death certainly could have been his.
I was literally amazed, and at this point, think this could have been
some other James Cole rather than mine (what are the odds, same name,
same time, same place?....) oh well, just my luck!
If anyone sees a name that rings a bell, please let me know.

I'm still searching for my grandfather's family. He and his wife and two
oldest sons came to OK in 1900 and settled in Caddo County. At Cougar, four
other sons were born.
<< My COLEs homesteaded in northeastern Oklahoma County, O.T., starting with
the run of '89. I've found information on other COLE homesteaders in
neighboring Lincoln and Pottawattomi counties whom I haven't been able to
tie into known lines. Any chance your COLEs were in the area in
territorial days? >>
I'm searching for information on my grandfather. He was Charles Columbus Cole,
born 15 Oct 1863 in New Orleans. He was married to Melona Arminta Miller. She
was born in Opelousas, LA.
Any information would be appreciated.

Hello everyone. I'm still digging around in Mississippi looking for
info. to trace my ancestor, Hiram Cole (of Franklin, Missip).
I haven't found too much so far, but I did find a couple of interesting
items regarding Coles in Missip:
In Wayne County, settlement began about 1806 with the arrival of
settlers including a MARK COLE and his brothers (found a book with this,
don't know yet who the brothers were...)
Pike County, after 1812 also had Cole families there.
In Attala County (organized 1834), settlers included William Cole, Isom
Cole and James Cole (found a book that stated most of these folks were
from TN, GA, AL, KY and the Carolinas and that many were vets of the
Battle of New Orleans.
Meanwhile, I found some probate records in Orange County Texas for whom
I believed to be my g-g-grandfather, James Cole. Trouble is, there were
all these names listed as heirs that didn't belong in my family! I
can't figure that out at all (unless of course there were TWO James
Coles in Orange/Liberty counties from the 1850s - early 1900s). I will
try and post some info. from that probate record in the near future in
case anyone else might benefit from it.
that's it for now....

While trying to locate gravesites in the Claquato Pioneer cemetery in
Chehalis, Lewis Co, WA today, I chanced upon a Cole gravesite
are these anyone's missing Coles?
Charles E. Cole 1885 - 1959
Elma Doris Cole 1889 - 1965
was able to find resting places of husband's grandfather, three aunts and
two uncles - plus two sets of in-laws plus a stone in the babies' section
which belongs to one of the families, but the records don't show which one
The Lewis County Historical Society and its associated museum has an
impressive collection of obituaries, and the two genealogy librarians there
are most helpful.

glad to share COLE info when I return. Thanks.

Dear Cole Cousins,
I got a letter from a stranger who had copied and sent me 12 pages of
Whiteside County, Illinois records that gave me an exciting breakthru!
One page contains the name of my gggrandfather, Gilbert COLE's youngest
son -Cyrus Dudley COLE. It also has the name of C. Dudley COLE's wife
Eliza Ann ROBERTS and lists birthdates of two of their daughters -one
born 15 Nov 1879 and one born 3 Jan 1881.
I had not known the maiden name of C. Dudley COLE's wife and I hadn't
known that he and Eliza had a 3rd daughter (besides Stella b. 1875 and
Sarah b 1879 on the 1880 census) .
By 1881when his 3rd daughter was born, Cyrus Dudley COLE would have been
30 years old and by then both of his parents and his two brothers had
died (bro. Cyrus at age 4 and William Franklin at age 26). So Dudley
probably only his sister, Mary COLE was still living and she was probably
still in Ashtabula County, Ohio.
I don't know what happened to Dudley's older sister, Mary ("Polly") COLE
b 1838 OH. She was 22 years old when Dudley was 9 years old in 1860 and
they with their brother William Franklin COLE age 20 were were living in
Colebrook township, Ashtabula Co, Ohio in 1860 with their parents,
Gilbert and Sarah OWEN COLE.
After Dudley's mother, Sarah, had died in 1865 when he was 14 yrs old,
his father, Gilbert COLE brought him from Ohio to live with him in
Whiteside County, Illinois. There in 1866, the widower, 53 yr old
"Deacon" Gilbert COLE married 33 yr old Louisa M. SHOLES, daughter of
Orin SHOLES. I don't know if Gilbert and his 2nd wife, Louisa had any
children during the 7 years of their marriage before Gilbert died at age
60 in 1873. I haven't been able to find any more about what happened to
Louisa SHOLES COLE but no doubt she kept in touch with her step-son,
Cyrus Dudley COLE and his family.

Thanks for the help.
COLE + HOWELL - Grayson Co., Va, Shelby Co., Tenn, Concordia Parish, La,
Cass Co., Tx
Isaiah Cole married Honor Howell, November 6, 1804 in Grayson Co,
Virginia. Family tradition has
it that Honor Howell was from Wales but....the 1850 U.S. Federal Census
of Concordia Parish,
Louisiana list her as being born in Virginia.
Ira Bedwell (Buck) Cole, son of Isaiah Cole and Honor Howell was born in
Memphis, Tenn.,
January 3, 1826.
Ira Bedwell Cole married the first time to ? Bell. They lived at
Vidalia, Concordia Parish, Louisiana.
They had one son John Washington Cole. John Washington Cole married but
left no living
descendants.
Ira Bedwell Cole and Lavonia Ann Eliza Jane White (16 years younger)
married and lived until their
death in Cass Co., Texas. They produced 8 children - 7 girls and one son
named Charles Barton
Cole. (The sir names of Barton and Bedwell are listed on the 1800
Grayson County, Virginia Tax
list.) The girls names were Willie Alta, Fannie Honor, Janie Viola,
Sarah Ira, Eva Magnolia, Rabie
Aldora, and Meda Anna.
Honor Howell Cole was listed as being 65 in the 1850 U.S Census of
Concordia Parish, Louisiana
so that would indicate that she must have been born about 1785 and been
about 19 years old when
she married. She must have been about 41 when she gave birth to Ira B.
Cole - plenty of time to
have produced numerous other children. Who are they? Who were the
parents and siblings of Isaiah
Cole? Who were the parents and siblings of Honor Howell?
Family tradition has it that Ira Bedwell Cole along with a brother
worked up and down the
Mississippi on a river boat. They became separated during one of the
yellow fever epidemics and
although he searched for years they never found each other again.
Ira's daughter Sarah Ira Cole had in her possession a painting of a
young girl with blue eyes, blue
dress, blond hair, named Lucy Cole, supposedly a cousin.
Another bit of curious information is that among the papers of Ira
Bedwell Cole was a land grant
issued to Mrs. Sarah James, as well a conveyance of land in Concordia
Parish, Louisiana from Ira
Bedwell Cole to his mother Mrs. Honor Cole. In the 1850 U.S. Census of
Concordia Parish, Mrs.
Sarah James, born in Tenn., was living in the household adjacent to Mrs.
Honor Cole and Ira Cole.
Family tradition has it that Sarah Ira Cole (daughter of Ira Cole) was
named for Sarah James. Who
was Sarah James? Perhaps she was a sister or some other kin to Ira
Bedwell Cole.
Is there anyone out there that can claim these Coles?
I have information on the descendants of Ira Bedwell Cole.
