I would like to correspond with anyone who is researching this family.
I'm thinking I am getting "close" to being accurate; however, much of
the data I have listed here... came previously published genealogical
materials and I'm still feeling I need others to collaborate with...

Hope this gives some "clues" to some ... and I hope I hear from at least
a few. Seems there are far fewer Coles and Cole surnames.
Greetings to all,
I am attempting to discover any information concerning Arthur Gideon
Cole and/or his family. To my knowledge he held a Ph.D. in Physiological
Chemistry and was a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Illinois,
Chicago during the late 1920s and 1930s. I believe that he was born in 1899
and passed on in 1947, however I am not certain that this information is
correct.
Any information and/or suggestions for availing avenues to discover
additional information about Arthur Gideon Cole would be tremendously
appreciated I can assure you. Thank you so much.
Best regards,
Nancy Gerace
Does anyone have information on my grandparents, Spurgeon
Thurman Cole b abt 1885 in Blue Springs, MO., and Cora Lee
McDaniels Cole b. June 9, 1890? Any information would be
helpful. I believe S.T. Cole,s father was Samuel. Thanks
Colleen Wilburn
In the course of compiling the James Cole of Plymouth update, I have
acquired data (usually a small amount) on some unrelated Cole lines that
may be of interest to Cole List researchers. Periodically I will post
some of these lines, grouping them in some meaningful way. If you're
interested in following up, email me with the researcher's name [in
brackets following the info].

1. JAMES COLE, b. 1810 in NC; m. Zelpha _____, b. 1818 in KY. James and
Zelpha both died in the 1870s in Carroll Co., IA.
Their son ISAAC ROBERSON COLE, b. 1847 in IN. He m. Sarah Elizabth
GOODMAN, possibly in AR. Isaac d. in 1885 in AR, and Sarah m. (2) Isaac's
brother WILLIAM COLE. He and Sarah d. in Bryan Co., OK.
[researcher: Coralie Loder]
2. ALLEN JONES COLE, b. 1823, possibly in NC or SC. He m. 1852 in
Arkadelphia, AR, to Elenor/Ellen BROWN. They had 9 children--list from
family Bible.
[researcher: Anna Spencer]
3. JAMES COLE, b. 1768 in Wythe Co., VA. He m. Elizabeth ISOM.
Their daughter MARY COLE m. John HASH in 1812. John d. 1828 in IL; Mary
d. 1862 in IA. This family also lived in Keokuk Co., TN, where at least
one child was born.
[researcher: Elizabeth Watkins]
In 1989 a researcher, Russ Thomason of Morehead, KY, sent me copies of
family group sheets and other material following the line of John and
Susanna Cole. John was b. in England in 1685, lived in PA, and d. in 1757
in Culpepper Co., VA. He had 8 children--2 sons, John and Richard.
The family group sheets and other material follow the line of:
Richard - Ann Hubbard and Margaret James Emsey
Richard - Sallie Yates (note says great-grandparents of Jesse James)
Jesse - Fanny Bivion
Lloyd - Catherine Bell (Russ's ancestor)
Apparently Redmond Cole worked on this line because Russ included the
first page of a manuscript Redmond wrote in 1935 called "The Cole Family
of Woodford County, KY." This page lists the First Generation, the family
of Richard Cole and Ann Hubbard. Redmond says that this is not the line
of either James Cole/Plymouth or Daniel Cole/Eastham. Redmond had
interviewed brothers Robert and William Cole living in MO in 1901,
obtaining data and combining it with later published histories on the
Anthony Lindsey Family and a 1928 history of Woodford Co.
Russ received the Redond Cole document via the Kentucky Historical
Society Library in Frankfort, KY if anyone is interested in obtaining a
full copy.
Russ also included info on a Stephen Cole, b. 1660 in England, d. in
Chester, PA, because there is some speculation and discussion about
Stephen being John's father. Some of his children apparently moved to the
southern states. His son Stephen seems to have m. a Martha Hunter.
If anyone is interested in this material, let me know.

Re your exchange on Matthew and William COLE...another possibility:
Joseph COLE (son of John COLE and Dianah HAWKINS) and Ruth CROSS (dau of John
CROSS, Sr., Dinah LANE) had nine (9) children born in Baltimore County, MD.
Two of their sons were named Matthew and William. The others children were
named Daniel, Solomon, Elisha, Joseph, Jr., John, Thomas, and a daughter
whose name I don't have. The birth dates I have on Matthew and William are a
few years different from those you show in your emails, however, this line
may be worth a look.
I am descended from this Matthew. I have him being born abt 1760 and dying
in Buncombe County, NC before 1830. He married Deana WOOD (dau of John WOOD
and Mary ?) abt 1780 in Sullivan County, TN. They were the parents of 10
children.
I have William being born in 1766 and dying in Laurens County, SC, in 1802.
I have no further information on him.
If you think that there is some possibility of a connection, I have
additional information on this line that I will be glad to share.
Jean (Turner) Wigglesworth
JTWiggie(a)aol.com
My Cole line is as follows:
Lelah Hazel Cole 1889 - 1989 daughter of Robert Lindford Cole 1867 -
1867. Robert was son of Willie P. Cole 1819 - 1909. Willie spelled his
name Willie, and Wiley. The P may stand for Person, or Phillips.
The Wilie P. Cole family (Willie, his 3rd wife his youngest daughter,
and 3 son's one of which
was Robert Lindford) went by covered wagon trail (5
families) from NE in 1860's to Walla Walla WA. Prior to reaching Walla
Walla Willie Coles
family stopped in Cove OR for 4 months before moving to
Wallowa County Oregon. The other 4 families went to Walla Walla. The
1900 Census shows that several of Willie P. Cole's children (he had 18)
stayed in what was then called Union county (now called Wallowa county).
Prior to death Lehal (Cole) Ralls mentioned that there was a connection
to Jessie James family. Willie P. Cole and Robert Lindford Cole would
not discuss Willie's parents, both would simply get up from the dinner
table and leave the house when ever the topic was discussed.
I also have a reference to some estate settlement that Robert Lindford
Cole was contacted for in the 1930's. The note references that this
estate settlement verified that Robert was related to Jessie Jame's
mother.
I have very little documented information on Willie. I know his
children and wife's names and places of marriage, dates ect. I found
one marriage record in the Jasper County Iowa marriage record book for
Willie and his 3rd wife (my ggmother).
Wille was born in Orange County North Carolina. Through marriage and
birth records of children he was in Illinoise, Iowa, Tenn (14 years) and
finally Oregon, where he is buried.
Willie was born 3-June-1819, in Orange County Sourth Carolina. He died
in Joseph Oregon on 18-April-1909. He married E. M. Ferrell in Marshall
county Tennessee on 26-Dec-1836. This pair had 3 children John Leonard
1837 Marshall Tenn; Elizabeth Rebecca 10-10-1838 hardin Illinois,
Evelinda Melinda 12-18-1839 Hardin Illinois. He married Eliza T. Marr
May 1843, Marshall County Tennessee. He married Catherine Linford
Minsner July 29, 1860 in Jasper county Iowa. Willle and Catherine moved
to Wallowa County Oregon in the 1860's. Have identified the marriage of
Catherine and Willie in the Jasper County, Iowa Marriage Records
1849-1869 book.
Willie was a baptist minister.
Willie and his 3rd wife had a corn farm near Tocumsch in Johnson county
Nebraska. He lived on
this farm for 14 years.
In the book "Carving the north end wilderness: Flora by F. Lorlene
Beddow, isbn 0-9615982-0-4, 1865; p. 104 it states that Willie was
brother to Zerelda Elizabeth Cole 1-29-1825 (mother of Jessie and Frank
James).
It is possible that parents were John Cole, and Dicey Warren. The LDS
database indicated that Willie Person Cole, was the son of John Cole and
Dicey Warren. John and Dicey were married 1818, in Orange North
Carolina. The LDS database also lists John Cole and Dicey Warren m. 19
Aug, 1831. However, I found a record in the orange co. marriage bonds
that shows Dicey Marren and John Cole m. same day, same state, same
county; but in 1831 instead of 1818.
Willie had 18 children,
John Leonard 10/1837,
Elizabeth Rebecca 10/10/1838 ,
Evelinda Melinda 12/18/1839,
Samuel Doke 5/30/1843 ,
James Allen 8/10/1845,
Sarah Jane 8/10/1847,
Charles Franklin 12/23/1848,
William Chalen 5/171851, nickname = Shanlen
Joseph 5/1/1854 ,
Mary 5/1/1854,
Mary Alice, nickname =Allie 3/13/1856 ,
Henry Hunter 5/23/1857,
Hannah Eliza 5/4/1861,
William P.10/11/1862,
George L. 7/15/1864,
Albert E. 8/20/1865,
Robert Lindford 5/5/1867,
Sarah C 1/27/1869.
Family migrated from NC, Marshall county Tenn., Hardin Illinois,
Marshall
Tenn., Hardin Illinois, Jasper Iowa, Tocumsch Johnson Co Nebraska,
Wallowa/Union County Oregon (Joseph, Lost Prairie, Prairie Creek).

I am equally excited.
However, at this time I cannot be of much help. I am new to genealogy
research. In fact, all the information that you see on my site is from other
members of my family.
Unfortunately for both of us, the distant relative that did all the research
on the Cole's going as far back as William Cole, died just a few weeks ago.
I got the information that you see on my web page from a close relative, who
was only interested in names as far back as she could get. She never sought
additional information such as source verification, or substantial details.
When I decided I wanted to check out the information for myself, I found
out, like I said, the original researcher had just died. Her son told me
that when things settle down, he would give me copies of everything his
mother had. He said it was boxes and boxes! Because of the situation, I will
be most patient.
Nevertheless, good news for us all. The information will be coming, and I am
not stingy. I have every intention of posting every thing I get on the web.
I do have a lot of source information on other branches of my family and
will post that eventually, but my priority is to post basic info first. I
have found this is quite time consuming, and I am only doing this as a
hobby.
Is it possible that I could have a copy of your info?

I am seeking information on the relatives of E.H. Cole (1824-1876). His parents
were John Cole (1799-1873) and Elizabeth "Sally" SCHOONOVER (no dates) of
Niagara Co., NY.
Here is a brief bio on E.H. Cole from Lane's _50 Years and Over of Akron and
Summit County_ (1892), page 661: "Born in Niagara Co., NY in 1824; removed with
parents to Ohio in 1832, settling in Northampton Twp (near Hawkin's Bridge);
educated in district schools; afterwards engaging in teaching, and later in
buying and shipping stock...was married November 15, 1848 to Ann Lewis BOIES of
Peninsula [b. November 7, 1831 in Portland, CT], who bore him four
children-Arthur M. and Herbert W., Nellie, and Frederick Hayden..."
Here's the information I have that was originally compiled by Robert Poole
Bishop of Hudson, OH as the "Descendants of John Cole"
1-John Cole (1799-1873), md. to Elizabeth "Sally" SCHOONOVER (no dates) of
Niagara Co., NY.
2-Albert Cole (no dates), md. to Ann HULL
3-Darwin Cole
3-Minnie Cole
2-Arthur Montieth Cole (1850-1922), md. to Lucy Jeanette CONGER TRUSCOTT
(1848-1924) of Summit Co., OH on June 20, 1876, Summit Co. OH
3-Samuel Jackson Cole (1879-1951)
3-Edmund Herbert Cole (1882-1960)
2-Ransome Cole (1827-), md. to Marilla McKELVEY
2-Sarah "Sally" Cole (1830-), md. to Archibald ELLIS
3-Julia ELLIS
2nd wife of John Cole, Mary RUGGLES
2-Mary Jane Cole (1836-), md. to Henry MONROE
2-Eliza Amanda Cole (1840-)
2-Harvey Cole (1842-)
2-Laura Ann Cole (1847-), md. to William Henry Harrison WELTON
3-Clyde WELTON
3-Nellie WELTON
3-Patti WELTON
I assume that all of John Cole + Elizabeth SCHOONOVER's children were born in
Niagara Co., NY and that all of John Cole + Mary RUGGLES' children were born in
Summit Co., OH.
Hi everyone, I have a question I hope someone can answer for me. I was
lucky enough to have a Southern Family Cole book loaned to me and while I
was looking through it I found a picture of the Cole Family Crest. Am I
wrong in thinking that each family of direct lineage had their own family
crest, or could this possibly be the crest for the intire Cole line?
Haven't been doing this except for about 7 months now.....so I'm still
learning. Does someone out there have an answer for me or at least their
own opinion on this?
Thanks in advance, if this isn't appropriate for the list....I welcome
anyone to e-mail me privately.

>From the Beautiful little country town of Cleveland, Alabama
This is a contuning problem. In most courties (but not all) there was NO
SUCH THING as a FAMILY crest. The idea behind a crest was to identify a
person by looking at his armour or flag. If everyone in the family had the
same crest then you could not identify them. A crest was granted to ONE
person and only that person could use it. It was usually passed on to the
heir of a title, but only usable by one person at a time. Now if a man had 4
sons he might petition of a new crest for the younger sons based on his crest
- ie different back ground, a bar (horizontal line) or a bend (diagonal line)
or extra item in the field 4 birds instead of 3. But that crest was then
passed by the sons to thier heirs.
Most of these places that sell "family crests" just take one which was
associated with the name and call it the COLE FAMILY CREST. If they cant
find one they make one up. There is no problem with using a crest in America
if you know that in all likelihood you dont have a right to it but then we
dont use the crest for ID here.
IF you want to look at various crests there are books of them in most
libraries which explain all the parts and then show examples.
In a way it is of like the MacDonald corporation trying to sue the clan cheif
of the MacDonald clan for using the term The MacDonald. It was laughed out
of Scottish Court has the clan chief claim dated to the middle ages. But
MacDonalds felt they had a right to the name because of thier corporate
image. Ugly American thinking.

It's certainly appropriate to post reunion announcements to our list -- but
PLEASE be specific. Remember that your message is going out to over 400
people, belonging to many different COLE families.

1870 Dresden, Weakley Co., TN. I am searching for any information on a
Landy/Landa/Lanny COLE- 48 b. SC, wf Mary 57, b. SC and possibly their son
Thomas-22 b. SC. Census shows a Mary KIRK- 20 b. TN residing with them..
They are listed in dwelling next to a Levi Davis-36 b. SC, wf Agnes 35 b. TN
and son Thomas -8 TN. On the 1880 Marble Twp, Garland Co., AR census these
same two families are living in dwellings next to each other. Agnes Davis is
evidently deceased and Levi has married a Mary A. (married name WEHUNT or
other spelling). Thomas COLE is not with his parents on this census. I will
be very grateful for any info on either or both of these families. I believe
they have to be related. Maybe Agnes was a COLE, not having found a marriage
I would like to solve this puzzle.

The only Elizabeth Cole I have is my great grandmother, born 1889, and
maiden name of Clutts. This couldn't be a match. Am I overlooking another
Elizabeth on my web site?

I am trying to find information on my ggggrandmother Henrietta COLE b. ca 1826 NY m. in Erie Co, PA, Luther FRANCIS. They had children:
Albert W b. ca 1847 PA
Laki b. ca 1849 PA
Hannah E b. 17 Apr 1856 WI (Baraboo, Sauk Co)
Joseph b. 1860 PA
Luther was b. in Lewis, Essex Co, NY, and there is the possibility that the COLE family was from that area too. I have information (census records for 1850 forward, burials) on all COLE families in Erie Co, PA, but cannot make any ties for Henrietta to them.
Both FRANCIS and COLE families went to WI in the 1850s. Some came back to PA while others stayed and yet others moved on to IA, MI, MN and IL.
If any of this sounds familiar or if you think that I may be able to help you with your COLEs who may have been in Erie Co, PA, please contact me.
