Dear BARRETT and COLE friends,
Just sharing this info. in which I thought some of you might be
interested. I just got it from Anne, a Michigan "Lookup Volunteer"
<milookup(a)hotmail.com>, About my Alfred BARRETT gggrandparents and their
neighbor, Orin/ Orrin COLE, Anne wrote:
No Alfred or Corintha Barrett or near spelling for Oakland Co. in 1870.
Orrin Cole is on page 259 Oakland County Highland
There is a little book on Highland (Michigan), called "Celebrate
Highlands First 150 Years" that says:
"Alfred Barrett came in February 1838 from Ashtabula Co. Ohio and settled
in
Section 6 about 80 rods north of where his son David now resides"
A big section on the Cole Family which I will mail to you if you send me
your address to my home e-mail annebeth(a)mediaone.net
"Orin and Tamer Cole settled on Clyde Rd. property west of Hickory Ridge
Rd. Here they rasied 21 children...."
"Hiram Cole and his wife Judith continued the tradition of farming and
working the land. Three children come of this union, Peter Cole, Myron
Cole

As Always, Anne

Please write to me if you know more about any of the following. Thanks,
Mary Kay COLE Ward<mksroots(a)juno.com> Richmond, Virginia.
Rev. Frank DANN and Mrs. DANN b. est 1865 were from London, England. I
don't know when they came to the U.S. but probably sometime before 1920
they had settled in Painesville, Lake Co., Ohio. Rev. DANN was probably
a Baptist minister. They were the parents of at least 5 children some
(or all) of whom were probably born in London, Eng. The birth order &
birth dates of their children my best guess as follows: Frank DANN, Jr.
b. 1885, Francis "Fannie" DANN, b 2 Feb 1887 in London, Eng.; George DANN
b est 1889, Mrs. Elmer DANN La Moreaux b est 1891, Eva DANN b est. 1893.
Their dau. Fannie DANN was 34 years old when in 1921 she became the 2nd
wife of my grandfather, a 57 yr old widow Wm. Barrett COLE and the
step-mother of his 5 sons. In 1920, the year before Fannie married, she
sang at the funeral of Addie BARRETT COLE, her future husband's mother.
The COLE family and Fannie DANN were members of the First Baptist Church
in Painesville, Lake Co., Oh. I wonder if maybe Fannie had been involved
with caring for Mr. COLE's 5 sons after their mother, Mary STOWE COLE
died. Fannie's husband, Wm. Barrett Cole, usually worked 18
hours a day. He was a well known business man in Lake County, Ohio where
he owned and ran the COLE Nursery, one of the largest nurseries in
America by abt. 1920. But the nursery suffered great losses during the
depression years. Fannie was 23 years younger my grandfather and he died
at age 68 in 1932, within 11 years after they were married. By then all
of Fannie's 5 step-sons had grown and married and one had died. I was
not born until 1935 and by 1940 my parents had divorced so I never met
Fannie Dann and I have few memories of the COLEs.
Three years before W.B. COLE died his eldest son, Gilbert Stowe COLE
had died in Jan1929 at age 33 and his wife Ruth FERGUSON COLE also died
that same year leaving 4 orphan children. Fannie DANN's sister, Martha
DANN WILSON took in and raised 2 of Gilbert's children, 2 yr old William
Barrett COLE, Jr. and 9 yr old Helen Virginia COLE, keeping their COLE
surname. The other two of Gilbert's children, Clarence & Gilbert were
adopted by an IVES family, using the surname IVES.
Sometime after her husband died, Fannie DANN COLE became a
housemother at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. Her hobby was
painting. Ten years before she died she moved to Eustis, Florida where
she lived with her sister, Mrs. Elmer La Moreaux until she died in 1963.
At that time her sister Eva DANN also lived in Eustis, Florida and her
brother, George DANN lived in Lakewood, Ohio and three of her step-sons
were still living, D. Barrett, Kenneth and my father, Victor Arthur COLE.
Her step-son, Alfred COLE had been killed during WW II.
Several months ago I wrote to David DANN who now resides at 125 Riverside
Drive, Painesville, Ohio 44077 asking him if he could be descended to my
DANN's but he did not respond.

To reply to RCole86005(a)aol.com's question about determining birth dates,
I received the following from another list:
In case your genealogy program does not have a Gregorian
Date Calculator, (to determine date of birth if you have an age at time
of marriage* or death) or a Consanguinity (Shared Blood) Chart.
* EXAMPLE: 18 Dec 1853, John Smith 28 years, 3 months and
16 days, married
Jane Doe 21 years 6 months 12 days.

Hi everyone,
I just joined the mailing list a few days ago and I haven't yet seen any
messages that pertain to the Cole's that I am looking for, so I thought
that I would do my first posting. I have been working on the Cole side
of my family for a while now, off and on, and I am totally stuck. My
great grandmothers name was Jessie Cole, she was born 8-26-1887 in Hart
County Georgia. She was the daughter of James Cole and Frances Allen
Cole. I have no information at all on her parents or siblings etc. I was
wondering if anyone out there might just be working on the same line or
have any information, if so, I would greatly appreciate any and all
help. Thanks to everyone!
Pam Caracol
Help. I am really stuck. I am looking for family of William Marion
Cole. 1880 census shows him at age 8 living in Union County, LA, with
grandmother Sintha Robinson (widow aget 59, b. TN). I have found
marriage of Thomas J. Cole and Josephine Robinson, in 1868. I found
Thomas J & Josephine on 1870 census. But after that I can find no trace
of the parents. I'm pretty sure the grandfather was James Cole, sawmill
engineer. I've found him & family on 1870 census, but of course by
then, Thomas J wasn't living at home. So not really sure. If I'm
ringing any bells anywhere, please let me know. Judy
Here is a 'formula" I found listed on another list. Maybe it will help..
"If you have a death date of an ancestor as 6 May 1889 with a note that the
person was 71 yeas 7 months and 9 days old at the time of death -
Write the date as 18890506 (1889 May 6)
Subtract 710709 (71 years, 7 months, 9 days)
The Result= 18179797
Subract 8870 (I am not sure why)
Resulting in 18170927 = birth date 1817 Sep 27"
Seems to work a lot of the time. --- try it.

I am seeking contact with descendants of JOSHUA FRANKLIN COLE. He married
TELITHA ADAMS probably in Polk CO TN abt 1858. They are on the 1860 and
1870 Polk CO Tn censues. There known children are:
Columbus Cole bc 1860
William Cole bc 1862
Eliza A.Cole bc 1864
Missouria Cole bc 1867
I have not located this family on an 1880 census. He was listed as a
smelter hand so assume he worked in the mine industry.
Any help will be appreciated,
Bettye
Dear Betsey <howes115(a)bcn.net>,
What a joy to get your GENEROUS offer, Betsey. Thanks so much! I'll
try not over "tax" your generosity! I'm stuck because information about
my Jonathan COLE seems very scarce. I've had great success with his
wife's (Mary "Polly" Ann Brewer) Brewer ancestry back to 1669 in
Middlesex, Mass and her Goodales back to 1565 in England. I've had great
success with his brother, Willard too! But I'm STUCK on where Jonathan
COLE and HIS parents came from.
Here is some of what I'm grappling with, Betsey. I've tried to be
clear and precise. Forgive me if it confuses you and drives you as crazy
as it's driving me! Maybe between the two of us we can connect my COLE
line with your COLE line (Ebenezer II who m Hannah BRYANT) - Chesterfield
from Kingston/Plymouth MA abt 1770. I'd be happy to claim you as a
"cousin"!
Many thanks for any help you can give me. Gratefully, Mary Kay COLE
WARD<mksroots(a)juno.com>
Will you please try to find Mass. birthplace & / or dates for these 7
people:
1) John COLE was b. 19 Apr 1744 probably in Mass.
2) Hannah, wife of John COLE was b. 31 Mar 1746 probably in Mass.
3)son, Jonathan was b abt 1770 probably Mass.(?Windor?)
4)son, Willard was b June or July 1779 in Mass (?Windsor, Berkshire Co.?)
5)Cyrus C. COLE b 1812 Mass [1850 census says b. Mass]
6)George W. COLE b. 1814 Mass?/ or NY? [1850,1860,1870
census's say he was born in NY. but the book "History of Ontario
Co,NY- 1893" says he was born in Mass.]
7) Amanda M. COLE b est 1816 Mass?/NY? [*Willard's will was
dated & witnessed 6 Apr 1842 and he died 3 yrs later in 1845.
I received jumbled info from a cousin that implys the daughters named
in his WILL were Esther A. WIGHTMAN, Hannah P. COLE,
and Amanda M. COLE and the sons named were George W. COLE,
and Cyrus C. COLE].
I think Willard & Jonathan COLE's parents [# 1 & 2 above] are the John
and Hannah COLE who died and were buried in Baldwin Corner's Cemetery,
Gorham, Ontario Co., NY in "Willard COLE's Lot # 4". I tried to figure
their birth dates accurately from their death dates. John COLE was b. 19
Apr 1744 probably in Mass. and died July 9, 1817 ae. 73 yrs 2 mo 21 d.;
his wife, Hannah was b. 31 Mar 1746, d Dec 3 1816 ae 69 yr 8 mo 3 d.
I haven't found the grave or death date for Jonathan COLE who died
about 1830/ 1831 as he disappears from the Baptist Church records about
that time. In 1832 his widow "Polly" left Gorham for Ohio with her
youngest son, my gggrandfather, Gilbert COLE.
On the Windsor, Mass. website I found Vital Record Statistics to 1850:
Which lists the date of marriage [intention] for Willard COLE and & his
wife; the names & birth dates of their first 4 children and the death
date of two of those children (also some of Hannah Punderson CHAPMAN's
relatives) as follows:
Hannah Punderson Chapman b 1779 and Willard Cole b. 1779 were married 22
Sep 1803 Windsor, Berkshire, Mass. Children:
1.Esther Avery Cole b. 1805 Windsor,Berkshire,Mass.[m.James Wightman]
2.Willard Punderson COLE b. Dec. 15, 1806; d Oct. 15, 1806, age 10 mo.
3.Hannah Polley COLE d. Willard and Hannah, July 21, 1807.
4.John Hadley COLE b Aug. 30, 1809 died Dec. 1, 1810.
5.Cyrus C. COLE b. 1812 Mass. m. abt 1834 Charity. (had 4 ch)
6.George W. COLE, Sr. b. 1814 Mass. m. abt 1838 Sarah Ann. (had 3 ch)
7. Amanda M. COLE b. est 1816 Mass.
After MUCH studying of all these COLEs, I've concluded that my Jonathan
COLE & wife probably came to Gorham in the early 1790's when he was in
his early 20's, thus the lack of any information about him in
Massachusetts. I haven't figured out whether his parents came to Gorham
with him or came later. His father could be the John COLE who bought
land in Ontario County in 1791 Mary Phelps, and in 1816 from Gideon
Granger but I have to get the deeds to confirm that.
Maybe Jonathan and wife "Polly" lived on his father's land for 10-15
years. I have transcripts of three Ontario Co. Deeds involving my
ggrandfather, Jonathan COLE [who was Willard's brother]. The first 2
were purchases made less than a year after his father, John COLE died in
July 9, 1817. The last
1st. Feb 19, 1818 bought 100 acres from Asabel & Lucy Morse.
2nd. May 6, 1818 bought 119 acres from Asa & Margaret Wolverton.
3rd was 13 Aug 1822 -Jonathan COLE sold to John Stutts 1/2 acre in
Gorham for $15.00 -this was recorded Apr 20 1830 @ 12:00 noon. I find
this sale interesting because we haven't found a death record for
Jonathan COLE. If you'd like a copy of these Deeds [transcribed by
Bob Cole]

Eric thinks there is a link between Southworth COLE who came to Ontario/
Yates Co from Chesterfield, Hampshire Co, Mass. and plans to pursue that
.
Pam Thompson <thompson.pam(a)apple.com>had also posed the possibility that
my COLES were connected to the following:
i. Abner Cole, b. 17 Aug 1783 in Goshen, MA [Families of Chesterfield,p.

ii. Southworth Cole, b. 29 Aug 1785. In 1808 he was "of Canandaigua,

iii. Benjamin Cole [Families of Chesterfield, p. 95]. [Source: as cited]

these men might have been of an age to buy land.
Gail Leonard who I mentioned above descends from Hannah Punderson CHAPMAN

I've tried to represent my ancestors in the following format which I hope
is
understandable. I'm new at this! I've traced my COLE's back to 1. John
& Hannah Cole of Gorham, Ontario County, NY who were married about 1765.
Several generations of their descendents lived there. My gggrandfather,
Gilbert COLE b 1813 moved from Gorham, NY in 1832 to Colebrook, Ashtabula
County, Ohio and his descendants lived there and in Painesville and
Perry, Lake County, Ohio
John and Hannah Cole: 2 known children (Jonathan and Willard):

I've learned that my grandfather, the grandson of Gilbert COLE was
William Barrett COLE who started a nursery business (Cole's Nursery) in
Perry & Painesville, Lake County, Ohio which was the largest (or 2nd
largest) in the U.S. until the depression. William Barrett COLE married
1st Mary STOWE and they had 5 sons of which my father, Victor Arthur COLE
b abt 1912 was the youngest. My father moved to Miami Florida after he
divorced my mother and he became a successful florist there and
campaigned unsuccessfully as a Republican for the Florida state senate.
When my father left Ohio, my sister age 3 and I at age 5 were put in St
John's, an Episcopal Orphanage in Painesville, Ohio where we remained for
several years until my mother remarried. So I grew up knowing very
little about my father or the Cole family.

List members,
I am looking for any information about Earl Leroy Cole
and his lineage. All I (think I) know is that he was born
in Mexico, Missouri in 1938 and was in the military (army?)
around 1957.
His mother's name I believe was Elizabeth, he had a
younger sister named Ann(a) and a younger brother named
Jessie. But I also have one piece of conflicting
information that says he was born in New York instead of
Missouri.
Ironically a Christopher Columbus Cole (1849-1919) had
children of those names, but his kids are about 1
generation too early, and they are in Porter Co., IN.
Granted it is a reach but does anyone know if it is the
same line?
Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
take care,

Do you know where in Canada George Barry Cole was born? The reason that I
ask is that we have Cole's who came out of Bathurst, New Brunswick in the
late 1800s. The father was Albert H Cole who was born in 1850 in Bathurst.
He married Mary Branch and they had four children (Lizzie, Robert, May, Will
and Ella). You note that Samuel may have been born in Maine and these
Coles migrated to Maine; we have always wondered if they were 'returning to
their homeland'.
