I have a copy of this book. My grandmother always called it her "Old
King Cole" book. There are about 40 pages - 6 chapters. Illustrations
include The Head of Flavius and the Head of Empress Flavia; some coats of
arms and seals; a neat picture of the first settlement on Leyden Street
in Plymouth identifying the people who owned the houses, a picture of
the author and another of Horace Cole (who is not in her direct line)
.... so the written material is closer to 30 pages. It is not much
of a genealogy - but is one of my treasures, nonetheless - Granny's
Old King Cole Book. It was oublished in 1920.
Pages 7-15 are about Old King Coel and 16 and 17 are about Sir William
Cole of Eniskillen
On page 23 in a one-page chapter on the Reign of King James, she says:
"James Cole, a younger son of Sir William Cole of Enniskillen, the
namesake and favorite of the King, about the time of the first Pilgrim
settlement at Plymouth, Mass, was given a grant by the King to most
valuable land there."
...
"Not until after the King's death, however, was any move made by James
even to visit Plymouth. He then resided in Highgate, a suburb of London,
where he was especially known for his love of flowers. In 1624 he
made a most interesting marriage to Mary, the daughter of the famous
Dr. Matthieu de Lobel, also residing in Highgate, ..... "
No - I don't think you should take much stock in this book as a reliable
genealogy. It is perhaps borderline on Sir William - and fanciful in
how his son was a favorite f King James, probably. The Old King Coel
part is fun to own and it is the only chapter with any "references"
at all - I quote completely the 5 lines at the end of chapter I.
AUTHORITIES: Morant's Colchester; Baleus; Leewis; John Rous; Carte
Geoffrey of Monmouth; Warrington; Hume; Ramsay; Carew's Survey of
Cornwall; Hoffman's Universal Lexicon; Gibbon; Butler; Platina; Vie de
Constantine; Caesar's Writings; Leigh's Choice Observations; Rowland's
Mona Antiqua; Harding; Kennet; Baronius; Polydore; Virgil
That's it. I asked about this once in soc.genealogy.medieval just for
the fun of it. It must be in the archives of that list (GEN-MEDIEVAL).
They didn't make fun of me, as I recall, but didn't put much stock in
the sources and discussed whether Coel was a real person or not.
Chapter 5 has the Antecedents of James Cole, as was mentioned - mentioning
the Sanderson family - who apparently lived "next door" to Sir William
Cole in Enniskillen. One Consider Cole III, who was Juliette Arden's
grandfather and who lived in western MA and NY in the late 18th century
and who married his first cousin - he and she had always known the
Margaret Olson
Descended from Hugh Cole, son of James, friend of King Philip, so they say.

Sharon,
I believe that on Rootsweb.com there is a mail list strictly for "nicknames"
and the possibilities of a real name stemming from those nicknames. At least
it does give you a single or multiple "real" name(s) to search for and that
name might be the "bingo" hit"
You might check out that site.

The info that Dave Utzinger posted to the Cole List pertains to Elizabeth's grandfather, James Cole of Plymouth and Mary Tibbes, his wife.
Please contact me regarding including some of your line in my update of the 1908 book, James Cole of Plymouth. As you can see, you have info on Joseph Dunbar that I don't have!

JOHN COLE3 (James2, James1) b. 16 March 1660 in Plymouth, MA; m. Susanna Gray, who was b. 15 Oct 1668, the daughter of Edward and Dorothy (Lettice) Gray [PCR 8:32]. The marriage took place before 1 Apr 1688, when "Susanna Cole (who was Grey)" was given an admonition by the Plymouth church for fornication before her marriage to John Cole [Plymouth Church Records, Vol. 1, p. 466]. At the June 1688 session of the Plymouth Court of General Sessions and Common Pleas, "John Cole and wife Susanna of Plymouth were found guilty of pre-marital fornication and fined £5." [Stratton, p. 195]
On 14 May 1697 Captain Nathaniel and Dorothy (Lettice) Gray Clark sold one-half acre of land in Plymouth to "Our son and daughter John and Susannah Cole of Plymouth" [E.B. Cole, p. 31]....
Susanna, age 59 and called the wife of John Sr. and the daughter of Edward Gray of Plymouth and Dorothy, his second wife, d. 20 or 26 Aug 1727 in Plympton [VRP, p. 466]. On 6 Nov 1727 the administration of her estate was granted to her sons John Cole and Joseph Cole of Plympton because she d. intestate [PCWills, Vol. 5, p. 317].
Two daughters are not listed in E.B. Cole or in Plymouth birth records, but they appear in Plymouth County Wills. On 16 Sept 1724, Robert Harlow and Susanna Harlow, for £40, quit claim to their mother, Mrs. Susanna Cole of Plympton, widow, all their interest in the estate of their father, her late husband, Mr. John Cole of Plympton, deceased [PCWills, Vol. 4, p. 442]. On 13 Apr 1724 Isaac Wright and Mary Cole quit claim the same interest; this was acknowleded on 26 Feb 1726 by Isaac Wright and Mary, his wife [PCWills, Vol. 5, p. 176].
On 8 Nov 1728 Isaac Wright of Plympton and Mary, his wife, who was the daughter of Mr. John Cole and his wife Mrs. Susanna Cole, both late of Plympton, quit claim for £20 all their interest in the estate of their said father and mother to John, Edward, Thomas, Joseph, Benjamin, and Elizabeth Cole, all children of the said John and Susanna Cole, and to Samuel Cole, son of Samuel Cole of Plympton, deceased, and grandson of John and Susanna Cole. [PCWills, Vol.5, p. 555]
Neither Edward, the second named son in the preceding record, nor Samuel, the last named son, appears in E.B. Cole or in Plymouth or Plympton birth records....
Children:
x. Elizabeth Cole, b. 4 June 1710 in Plympton [VRP, p. 75; listed as "Elizebeth, ch. John Sr. and Susanah" in original records]; m. Joseph Dunbar in Plympton on 30 Oct 1729 [VRP, p. 310]. Elizabeth Dunbar is named with her brothers and sisters in the 1731 quitclaim record of Deborah Fuller, former wife of Elizabeth's deceased brother Samuel--see Samuel4 [PCWills, Vol. 6, p. 77].
Cushman, p. 28, provides the following information about Elizabeth, citing the sources listed: She d. before 26 Oct 1767, when Joseph, of Halifax, MA, m. (2) Mary (Jackson) Cushman [Halifax Vital Records, p. 30], who was the widow of Moses Cushman. Joseph was b. 8 Sept 1702 in Hingham, MA, the son of Joseph and Christian (Garnet) Dunbar [History of Hingham, Vol. 2, p. 197]. He d. 25 Feb 1782, age 81, in Halifax, and is buried at the Thompson Street Cemetery [gravestone].
NOTE: E.B. Cole states that John3 m. (1) Patience Barber. However, it was actually his son, John4, who m. Patience Barber. Further confusion arises because John3, son of Hugh2, was also b. in 1660 in Plymouth and also m. a Susannah, maiden name unknown. However, their children were all b. in Swansea, beginning in 1689. This John3 (Hugh2) and Susannah lived in Swansea until their deaths. No other couples named John and Susannah Cole appear in the records in this time period in the Plymouth area.
E.B. Cole¹s list of children for John3 and Susanna, p. 31, is incorrect. It is given below for comparison:
i. Patience Cole, b. 1697 [?].
ii. John Cole, b. 1699 [wrong date].
iii. Joseph Cole, b. 4 Feb 1706.
iv. Ebenezer Cole, b. 17 Oct 1711 [actually the son of John4].
v. Hezekiah Cole, b._____; d. 16 May 1724 [probably the son of John4].

RE: Finding "Mindie"
Hi, I have been subscribing to this list in hopes that I might pick up a
clue to finding my Ggrandmother MINDIE COLE. My story goes....
My grandfather JOHN CUMMINS was born in Nashville in 1872. He left home
at an early age...shows up on the MS census in 1900 at age 19. The story
goes he came to MS with a herd of horses. He settled on my grandmothers
sis's farm met my grandmother and the story goes from there. He never
spoke of his family. He was killed in 1950 by a hit and run driver. I
obtained his ss application and it listed his fathers name as GEORGE
CUMMINS b. TN. Mothers name MINDIE COLE b. TN. That was all the info it
gave except to say my grandfather was born in Nashville in 1872. He nor
his parents shows up on any TN census. Can anyone help? My mothers name
was Entna "MENTA" so maybe MINDIE may be a nickname. Thanks for your
help...Nyoka

Notes for Edward GRAY:
He arrived in Plymouth ca. 1643 and became a merchant, among the wealthiest in
Plymouth Colony.[Plymouth Colony, Its History & People, Eugene Aubrey
Stratton, 1986]
Took the freeman's oath in 1657, and was constable in 1666. A merchant, he
amassed an estate inventoried at £2,751, largest at the time in Plymouth
Colony. In 1664 John Winslow of Boston gave land to his granddaughters Sarah
and Anna Gray, naming their father Edward Gray. On 2 Nov. 1665 Edward Gray
"being about to marry a second wife" made provision for his five daughters by
his first wife. The inventory of Edward Gray's estate was taken in July 1681.
In a financial settlement 24 Aug. 1681 are mentioned three sons and three
daughters of the widow; double portion to John Gray; and single portions to
Nathaniel and Desire Southworth, Seth and Elizabeth Arnold, Sarah Gray and
Anna Gray. Land of Edward Gray was divided 30 Oct. 1684 among Nathaniel
Thomas and Dorothy Gray, as guardians of Edward, Thomas, Samuel, Susanna,
Rebecca, and Lydia (children of Mr. Edward Gray late of Plymouth deceased);
Nathaniel Southworth and wife Desire; Seth Arnold and wife Elizabeth; Samuel
Little and wife Sarah; Capt. John Whalley, as guardian of Anna Gray; and
eldest son John Gray. [Mayflower Families, Vol 2, p. 15]
According to family tradition [usually means greatly embellished] he and his
brother Thomas were smuggled on board the ship in which they came and were
sent to America by people who were intriguing for their property. The oldest
stone on Burial Hill in Plymouth is that of Edward Gray "Here lyeth ye body of
Edward Gray, Gentleman, aged 52 years and departed this life ye last of June
1681." The stone is made of slate.

I have serious doubts concerning this. James did not, as far as I can tell,
carry a title such as "Sir" or even "Mr" which he most certainly would have if
his father had been a knight. Also, James was a bartender and was in constant
trouble with the authorities. This is probably the same folks that had him
married to Mary Lobell!!!

My COLE / OWEN family: The following is an Exerpt quoted from the
book "History of New Lyme" pg 46 and 47 titled "Ashtabula Co., Ohio- New
Lyme Township":
"JOEL OWEN from Nelson, Tolland Co., Conn. was the first settler in
the township. He left Connecticut in Nov 1803 with wife and two
children, in a wagon drawn by heavy oxen. Because of bad weather he had
to leave his family at Amsterdam on the Mohawk River until spring and he
continued on to Ohio alone to build a cabin during the winter. Returning
for his family they started again for Ohio in June 22, 1804, traveling
with Joel Owen's brother who was coming as far as Chatauqua Co., N. Y.
After many difficulties and delays on 13 Aug 1904 they reached their new
home 9 months and 13 days after
leaving their home in Connecticut. Their new cabin was near Saybrook,
Ohio, 7 miles from any white inhabitants, Edmond Strong in Morgan and
Joshua Forbes in Wayne, Ohio. It was 7 years before another white family
arrived in the area where the Owens family had lived and traded
peacefully with their Indian neighbors. In 1816 Mr. Owen sold his farm
and moved to Saybrook, Ohio and then to Wrightsburg, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs.
Owen had five daughters. Three of them married and settled in Colebrook,
Saybrook and
Gustavus. Sally married Gilbert Cole and Polly married Mr. Barber."[end]
My gggrandmother Sarah "Sallie" Owens was born 17 Sep 1810 NY the dau. of
Joel and Mary Owen. Sarah married probably in Colebrook, Ashtabula Co,
Ohio 1835 my gggrandfather Gilbert Cole b.1813 in Gorham, Ontario Co.,
NY. Their 4 known children born in Colebrook, Ashtabula County, Ohio:
1. William Franklin Cole b. 14 Dec 1839 m Addie "Eliza" Barrett (2 ch.)
2. Mary Cole b. est 1841
3. Cyrus Owen Cole b. 1845 died @ age 4 on 30 Oct 1849.
buried South Cem. Colebrook, OH.
4. C. Dudley Cole b. 1851/1852 m. Eliza A. in Whiteside Co, ILL.(2 ch.)
Sarah Owen Cole's 26 yr old son Wm. Franklin Cole died 1 Sep 1865 leaving
a widow and a very young son & daughter. And a month later Sarah herself
died at age 50 on Oct 3, 1865. Her widow, Gilbert Cole moved to
Whiteside County, Illinois and within a year married Louisa Sholes, the
daughter of Orin Sholes on 9 Oct 1866 there. Gilbert died 7 years later
at age 60 on 10 Dec 1873 in Whiteside County, Illinois.
My gggrandfather Gilbert Cole b. 1813 in Gorham,Ontario Co, NY was the
grandson of John Cole b. 1744 & his wife Hannah. Gilbert had moved in
1832 when he was 19 yrs. old with his widowed mother "Polly" from Gorham,
NY to Colebrook, Ashtabula County, Ohio where he met his wife to be,
Sarah OWEN. An older sister, Melinda Cole and her husband Roland Treat
with their first 4 children had previously moved from Gorham, NY to
Colebrook, OH.
Please HELP! I need a breakthru on my COLE / OWEN lines. I started
research about 2 years ago and I'm sure I know more than anyone has ever
known about our family. My parent divorced before I was 5 and my sister
(age 3) and I spent several years in an Ohio orphanage. I have few
memories of my father, Victor Arthur Cole. If you recognize or can add
anything please contact me.
Thanks!! Mary Kay Ward <mksroots(a)juno.com> Richmond, VA

Am searching for the parents of William or Samuel Cole who married Susannan
Porter, daughter of Samuel and Mary Alley Porter, either in Scott Co. Va or
the part of Ky that includes Martin Co. of today. They had a son who was
in the Pike Co. Ky.1830 census
and the 1840 Cabell Co. W. Va. 1840 census. Could William be the son of
Isaac Cole
who was in Logan Co.Va. 1800 and later in Giles, Monroe, and Mercer Co. Va.
Isaac was with the group of men who went after the Native Americans who
supposedly murdered the whites in Bluestone area of Va. in 1781. I have
been trying to connect
Isaac to our Cole line for years for most of my other ancestors-Parkers,
Adkins, Bartrams, Frys,Fergusons, and Scaggs were all from that area .
Help!!!! Linda

Hi I'm looking for information on James Cole. I know he was married to
Nancy Jane "Gincy" Bartram. He was said to be a distinguished citizen in
Wayne or Cabell County WV.
I am looking for his parents and other family members.
Thank you for any assistance.
There was mention a few weeks back of a connection with James COLE of Plymouth
arriving at the Plymouth Plantation on the ship Ann.
My AOL connection eats saved files faster than I can keep up with them. I
would appreciate hearing from any one who might have information on this or
any reference to this connection.
In conjunction with James Cole's arrival in the new world, I have found a
title, new to me on this line, "COLE 200 - 1920 A.D., by Juliette Arden,
daughter of Henry Arden and Juilitte Cole", Tercentenary Edition, 1925 located
in the Sutro San Francisco Library.
The author states James COLE was the younger son of Sir William Cole of
Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ulster, Ireland.
Two references were found in this title. First, was mention of "The
Genealogies and Pedigree of Sir William Cole of Enniskillen, county of
Furmanaugh, Kingdom of Ireland, Knight, by Sir Wm., Segar and W. Penson".
Is there any one who has this Genealogy or information about it?
Secondly, a statement was made that the connection of the James COLE line with
Sir William COLE, was that the James COLE Jr. dec. who settled in western MA
and NY maintained oral contact "close communion", with the descendants of one
of the Sanderson family of Castle Sanderson, County Cavan, Ireland which
adjoins Furmanaugh, where Enniskillen is located. It is further mentioned
that this Sanderson family is the one Sir John Cole of Enniskillen married
into nearly three hundred years ago. The reference continues, "We find the
Sandersons in 1886 then almost extinct here, mentioned especially in the
press notices of the golden wedding celebration of William COLE (son of
Consider 3d) and his wife Cynthia Jackson". This author's line is: James,
James Jr., John, John Jr.,Joseph, Consider, Consider 2d, Consider 3d, William,
Juliette.
I have found reference to the Sanderson family in the Enniskillen area about
the 1640s on the Internet.
Has any one on this list any information or reference for or against this
information?

I'm looking for Samuel Cole born early 1800's in either Maine or
Vermont, he married Mary Barry who was born in Pennsylvania. They had
one known son George B. Cole born 19 Nov 1840 in Ontario, Canada. My
Cole line settled in Ionia Co., MI for awhile where my g-grandfather
Jasper Davis Cole was born on 5 Sep 1870, the family then moved to Emmet
County, MI. George and wife Delila Davis and their son Jasper are
buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Harbor Springs, Emmet Co., MI. Would like
to find more on Samuel and Mary (Barry) Cole and if there were other
children.
Thank you in advance,
Mary Stoll-Barnt
Beverly,
Although I cannot make a connection for you, I feel there is a strong
possibility that your Joseph Cole is descended from Joseph5 Cole (Hugh4,
Hugh3, Hugh2, James1) who married Freelove Mason and moved to Washington
Co., VA in about 1774.
Each of your Joseph's children's names--except Fairman--is prevalent in
this line, especially Hugh. Whenever I see "Hugh Cole," I suspect a
connection to the James Cole of Plymouth line!
One Joseph Cole from the Joseph/Freelove line and his wife Mary Curren
had 10 children, with 5 being named Margaret, Mary, Hugh, Anna, and
Joseph! He's not yours, but you can see the naming pattern.
Furthermore, some branches of this line moved from VA to TN--especially
Carter and Johnson Counties.
I believe I've posted the Joseph Cole/Freelove Mason family to this list.
If you need it and can't find it in the archives, let me know and I'll
send it to you.
If you make the connection through further research, please let me know.
I'd like to include your line in my update of the James Cole of Plymouth
book.
