He could well belong to one of the "lost" branches of our family. Joseph
Dill COLE was born in the Jackson Purchase area of KY, lived in the
Neodesha / Independence / Cherryvale part of KS for some years, then
settled in Oklahoma Territory when the Unassigned Lands were opened.
He had a son named Edwin and one of his daughters married a SHAFER. In
this group of COLEs, there is a strong tendency to use nicknames -- I think
because there's such a strong tradition of naming children for aunts,
uncles, grandparents, etc. If Al Cole is still on the list, he can
probably provide more information as he is a direct descendant and I'm just
in collateral line.
Will paste the basic chart onto the end of this.

Good Morning Cole Family!
I am looking for a Eldon or Edwin or ... that went by the name of "Jack"
Cole. He was born in abt. 1923 in Hepner Oregon, and has cousins by the
name of Shafer (spelling unknown).
This is a branch of the family we have not researched at all, and would
like to get started on. Thanks for any help!

Vegetarian: Indian word for "Lousy Hunter"!
Hi Patti--I have lots of William Coles in my database and only one sems to
come close to a match for you. I have a Wm born in 1826 to Joshua Cole. My
suggestion would be to branch out a bit on the counties you are searching. My
Coles also went from NC to TN and had connections in GA. In NC check in
Buncomb Co as well as Cherokee. In GA try Towns and Union Co and in TN mine
were in Polk. These people seemed to move quite a bit and I also have them
vanishing for one census and turning up in teh same place later with children
born in another state. Have fun!

Hi all,
I thought you might get a kick out of hearing this: last night I had a dream.
I was at a craft and flea market sale put on by a little old lady club in
NC. It was as if Aunt Bea from Mayberry was there. Anyway, under a table,
in a pile of books, I found an old, dusty, really beat up copy of The Great
Migration Begins! I took it to the desk and told the lady I'd pay whatever
she asked for it. She said: "Take it! It's worthless!" I told her I was
going to give her $10 for it anyway because it is a very valuable book filled
with important information!
I've got to take a break from this genealogy stuff for a while, I think. :)
Dianna.

Looking for info on Barnet Cole of Frederick County, Maryland. He appears on the 1756 census in All Saints Parish. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Believe he had a son Barnet who appears on a Aug 1776 list of inhabitants of Frederick County, MD, in a part that is today in Montgomery County, MD. This Barnet moved to Washington County, PA, where he died in 1814.

I think I paid about $125 several years ago as a member. If you have early
New England, it is the "bible" as an enormous amount of research was done.
The first 3 volumes are over 2,000 pages and include bios of all those that
could be proven to be in New England by the end of 1633. The new series,
which I believe will be 6 volumes cover 1634-1635. Volume 1 covers A-B
surnames and is about 600 pages.
Always optimistic--Dave
You have asked how the Great Migration Begins could be helpful in your Cole
research. It is a three-volume work of 2386 pages which includes profiles
summarizing the most current research on all emigrants to New England who
arrived by 1633. Accordingly, it includes profiles on James Cole of
Plymouth, Job Cole of Plymouth, Duxbury, Yarmouth and Eastham, Rice Cole of
Charlestown and Samuel Cole of Boston. It gives some information on each of
their children. It will be helpful if you have traced your Cole line back to
one of these emigrants. If you have New England ancestry, it is likely to
have information on other lines you are tracing.
It is available from the New England Historic Genealogical Society sales
department for $125 for the set, plus $6 postage and handling with a 10%
discount for members.
You can call toll free to order 1-888-296-3447.

While researching my family I noted these items in the card catalog at

The price is not really astronomical when you consider what you get. The
first edition was in three volumes. and the amount of information makes it
worth the price. I don't know that you can get just volume 1 of that set,
though volume 1 of set 2 is now out as a single volume.
