Hello Cole researchers,
I am looking for the ancestors of (Chloa) Frances Cole, who married
George E. Sherwood in Foxcroft, ME on 11/1/1857. They had five children
and eventually settled in Manchester, NH. Their children were Theodore
H. Sherwood, John W. Sherwood, Hattie C. Sherwood, Annie F. Sherwood,
and Harrie W. Sherwood- the latter three dying of tuberculosis when they
were in their twenties. (Chloa) Frances' parents were purportedly named
Josiah and Amelia, but that it all the information I have at present. I
believe her parents also lived in Dover-Foxcroft, ME. Any information
about this line would be very much appreciated!!
Thanks!

Hi Tim,
The colonial Maryland COALEs are a rather tangled family.
None of the current information I have matches yours; however, my Coale family
was in the same places at the same times as yours.
My immigrant ancestor was William COLE, son of Rev. Humphrey COLE and Mary
MOTT of Essex, England. He arrived in Virginia in 1617 and moved later to St.
Jerome's, Maryland.
Let's talk.

Melissa,
I think we might be able to help each other. It might actually be a
answer I've been searching for. My greatgreatgrandfather was WILLIAM
COLE born sometime in the 1820's. He married Rebecca jane Roads in1845
in union county GA,he stated he was born in NC.I've only found 1 census
for 1850 with them together. But the family consisting of a daughter and
3 sons that I know of moved to the cherokee county Nc,Polk county Tn
area and William is not every listed with them he is also not buried in
the graveyard with Rebecca and some of the children which leaves me with
the question what happened to him, I think he ran off leaving his
family, their last child was born in 1862.What do you think do you have
anymore info on your william ? woul be happy to share.

Hello all,
I think that this may be confusing. Please forgive, and please stick with
me.
I am searching for some information about my great-grandfather's family. I
have a little bit of information (most of it conflicting), and I'm not sure
what to believe, maybe you all can give me some advice.
Arthur Eugene Cole was born 1878 to Martha in Tennessee. Arthur told my
father that he was a bastard...father was William Swann and Arthur was sold
into pseudo-slavery by an uncle and eventually was purchased by his father
and wound up working on his father's farm (this is family lore).
Martha and her mother (Elizabeth) died sometime after the 1880 census. I
have been told by a cousin that Swann willed acreage to Arthur and his uncle
(I don't have this documentation yet).
I sent after Arthur's social security application (hoping it would give me
more information about his mother) and he listed William Cole as his
father's name. He listed his mother's name as Martha Inman. I know that
these records don't necessarily have to reflect fact.
I have several questions, no answers and it has virtually halted me in my
research because I don't know which story to believe. I had always been
told that Martha Cole (single mother) was Arthur's mother and that William
Swann was his father. Now, I've got the social security application which
tells me that William Cole was his father and Martha Inman his mother. I'm
just not sure which direction I should head in my research. Any
suggestions?
Thanks for your help,

I am researching the family of Ezra I. SMITH who was b. at Belfast, NY 3 July
1850. He died 23 September 1923, town of Bolivar, NY. Who were his parents?
His wife, Harriet COLE SMITH was b. 1862 at Meadville, Crawford County, PA.
She died 30 April 1931, Bolivar, NY. They are buried in Maplelawn Cemetery,
Bolivar. Who were her parents?
They had one son, Fred SMITH, living (1931) in California, and two daughters,
Mrs. Donald CURTIN of Bolivar (1931) and Mrs. Nina WHEELER of Bradford, PA.
(1931).
Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.
Here is a URL to my web page for this John Cole:
http://www.mesatop.com/cole/John_Cole.htm
I only have 9 children listed for John and his first wife Johanna,
and 3 children for John and his second wife Dinah. I am descended
from his second son named Joseph, born in 1726.
Please keep in mind that if my data says "possibly", it means
just that and no more. The discussion at the bottom of John's page
is intended to stimulate further thought and research.
Hope this helps.

Thank you all for your prompt response. Your interest and help are greatly
appreciated. I can't wait to get to the library tomorrow and check out the
references you sent me.

- "19 Nov 1773. John Whoolsey of Long Island and Sarah Cole, wid. of
Dutchland."
I believe the above John Whoolsey (Woolsey) md as his first wife Priscilla
Woolsey (a third cousin)in Ulster county, NY. They had four children then
Priscilla Woolsey (Woolsey) died. John Woolsey, with four tiny children to
raise, married, as his 2nd wife, Sarah Oliphant, d/o Ephraim Oliphant and
Sarah Higgins Stout, of Hunterdon Co., NJ and Ulster Co., NY.
Sarah Oliphant was born 6 Apr 1751 in Hunterdon Co., NJ. Besides the four
children of John by his first wife she raised a large family in Greene
County, Tennesse, where they finally settled after being in Washington Co.,
VA. They settled "north of the Nolachucky" in Greene Co., TN.
Does anyone know who her first husband, ________ Cole, was? Was he
connected to Joseph Cole and Freelove Mason, who left a will in 1785 in
Washington Co., VA? I thought at first he might have been Hugh Cole, who
was deceased by the time his father wrote his will, but possibly not.
Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. I am working hard to
"document" our Woolsey family. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Wilford W. Whitaker
Mariam COLE, daughter of Moses COLE, married 18 March 1837, Samuel LE FLEUR

Was she the sister of Thomas COLE, who married Mary Ann NICHOLS? On the 1840

resided in Summerhill Township, Crawford County.
Mary Ann (NICHOLS) Cole died 10 September 1885, Summerhill Township.
Any information on these families would be greatly appreciated.
