Hi--I am responding to the rollcall pasted this weekend. My Coles started out
in Buncombe Co NC and went to Polk Co TN by 1850.
My direct ancestor, John Dallas Cole ( son of John M, son of William L.)was
married to Minda Fox in 1896, had one son. He next appeared in Tuolomne Co
CA, married to Rocia Henson of GA. They then went to Franklin Co IL by 1920.
He died there in 1932. His wife moved to Wayne Co MI to bew near her
daughters, where she died about 1935. I would like to track down all of their
children. My grandmother Margaret, was one, and I know what became of her and
her sister Gladys, but not the brothers.
Names and birth years.
Ruford 1903
Clarence 1897
Augustus 1901
Ira 1905
Howard 1909
Also wonder what happened to his step son William. Last name appears to be
Among on the record, but I think it is something more like Amory.
Any cousins out there?
I have 2 female Coles:
Dorcas Cole who married Nathaniel McClure. No personal info on either one.
Their daughter Mary McClure was b ca 1792 in Washington Co., VA, m Drury
Senter 6 June 1809, d 9 Jan 1853 Grayson Co., VA.
Annatjie Kool/Cool/Cole m Moses VerVeelen 27 Oct 1767 in Poughkeepsie,
Dutchess Co., NY.
I have two (unrelated) Cole "earliest ancestors," i.e. the earliest that I
have information about. They are:
Amanda Catherine Cole b. 6 Feb 1843 d. 17 Jun 1910 Warren MA. m. (as his
2nd wife) 1 Jan 1868 in Tottenville, Staten Island John Van Wagner. Her
parents perhaps John and Catherine Cole, but dead or missing by the time of
her marriage. After marriage to John Van Wagner they lived in Stottville NY
(near Hudson) and had many children.
Adeline Cole b. abt 1812 m. George Williams of Nassau, Rensselaer Cty. She
died 10 Aug 1869. He lived all his life in the Nassau area and outlived his
wife by many years. Chances are she is from a Cole family in or very near
Rensselaer Cty.

Dear Cole cousins,
Please excuse my mistake of yesterday's post. Rufus was NOT in the
1880 census - he wasn't born until 1881. His mother, Mary (age26) WAS listed
in the household with Martha (age56) as the head of household. Any
information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The parentage of Rufus Cole has remained a mystery to my husband's
family. It is possible that he was illegitimate. He is listed in
the 1900 census in Merriwether County, GA with family #145 with Mary
Cole as the head of household. His birth is listed as March, 1881.
In the 1880 census for Merriwether County Mary and Rufus are listed
(with correct ages) with Martha Cole as the head household. There
are two other young adults and four children also listed. My husband's
grandmother flat refused to discuss her dad's (Rufus Cole's) parentage
with me. Her name was Estelle Cole Johnson and she passed away last
Christmas Eve at the age of 96 in Albany, GA. We named our youngest son
Cole in honor of his great-grandmother. Estelle was the second eldest of
eight
children. There are several children still living, but none will
discuss the family. They are all wonderful people, but I still would
like the truth and history of the family. Does anyone have ANY information?
Regards,
Carole Johnson
Hello,
I am looking for any information on Ridley COLE (b. 1785 England, migrated
to America, m. Hannah READER), Ridley died 1864. He settled in Oneida
County, New York, had a daughter Rachel (my ancestor), who married Joseph
PAINE. Does anyone share
this line with me or know of where I might find more info? Unfortunately,
the above is all I know about the COLE line. I would like to
find some new "cousins" and correspond.
Thanks,
Carol Martin

I don't want to divert the thread of this list, but the naming
conventions in certain branches of the COLE family/families certainly
attract attention.
From Carlene and Wilfred Ho we have names like Oliver Cromwell COLE.
>From my own line I have Andrew Jackson COLE, Martin Van Buren COLE, and the
whimsical Christopher Columbus COLE (we called him Clum). Plus, I have
rather unique given names in my family like Carthaette and Clyle. Many of
the people in my line have middle names that are the surnames of either
close relatives (in-laws) or highly respected neighbors: David Payne COLE,
John Conger COLE, Jay Hansford COLE, etc. In the several hundred COLE names
that I've recorded so far in my line there are only two instances of a son
named with his father's given names -- there are combinations and mixes and
matches and favorite names but no first and middle names the same as
another's.
I'd be interested and curious to hear if anyone else has experienced a
quirk of naming among their branch.

Generation 1:
According to family tradition the father of Thomas
Washington Cole was Thomas Cole, probably Thomas
Washington Cole from VA.
Generation 2:
Thomas Washington COLE and his wife Patsy died
in North Carolina before 1840. Thomas and Patsy
were victims of either a tornado or were drowned
in a covered wagon crossing a river/stream.
Thomas and Patsy were married before 1820.
They were survived by
at least four children:
1. Peter COLE, b. about 1820;
2. Harry COLE, who became a doctor in
Mobile, AL
3. Thomas Washington "Tom" COLE, Jr.,
b. 24 Nov., 1824 and
went to Covington Co., MS, by 1846
4. An unidentified daughter.

A descendancy chart of my COLE line can be found at my website, and
