Greetings Tim!
I've seen just a little in an encyclopedia. Born in England, studied art,
changed over to landscape painting, then moved to U.S.

In search of "Lost Sheep"....
My GGgrandparents moved from Obion Co. TN to MO sometime between 1861 and
1865, and moved several more times before ending up in Oklahoma Territory
in 1889. Although he may have kept in touch with his siblings, as the
decades passed our line lost touch with the rest of the family.
My GGGgrandfather, James Madison Cole, Sr., was born February 17, 1813
somewhere in TN and died December 27, 1856 in Obion Co., TN. He married
Mariah MATHEWS, born February 12, 1810 in Virginia and died February 12,
1854 in Obion Co., TN.
They had three sons:
John Mexico COLE [January 16, 1838 - October 08, 1840]
Obviously, he died much to young to leave descendants.
James Madison COLE, Jr. [November 19, 1836 - ?] I know that he survived
both of his parents, as he was appointed guardian of younger siblings. His
may have been married to Rebecca Birdwell or Martha Ward -- or both, or
neither. I have no proof that the James COLE on those marriage licenses
was our James M. COLE. I believe that some of his family remained in Obion
Co., but I've been searching for his descendants in vain.
William A. "Bob" COLE [born January 23, 1840 in Obion County, TN; died
January 17, 1902 in Luther, Oklahoma]. Married Ellen CROCKETT [born
November 08, 1840 in North Carolina; died December 30, 1910 in Luther,
Oklahoma]. They were my GGgrandparents and I have most of their downline.
James Madison COLE, Sr. and Mariah MATHEWS also had four daughters.
Mary Frances COLE was born December 15, 1834 in Obion County, Tennessee.
She was shown as living in her parents household in the 1850 census. Her
husband may have been Levi C. SIMMONS. Again, no proof that the marriage
license on record was really hers -- but there's a family tradition of a
connection between our COLEs and the SIMMONS family who homesteaded nearby
in Oklahoma Territory and such a marriage would certainly explain it.
Elizabeth COLE was born about 1842, according to the 1850 census.
She may have been married to Joseph E. CALDWELL or John M. BUCKLEY -- or
both, or neither. No proof that the Elizabeth COLE on those marriage
licenses is my GGgrandaunt, but there was no other Elizabeth COLE near her
age on the 1850 census for Obion or surrounding counties.
Nancy COLE was born about 1843.
Martha COLE was born about 1845.
Would love to find any of their descendants.

Apparently this is the John HUNTER father of Martha Hunter who m. Stephen
COLE Jr. His son Peter HUNTER is said to have died at sea...thus the large
number of males named Peter in this family, in his memory.
Pg 76 John Hunter, Newtown, Yeoman, provides for wife Margaret. (Margaret
ALBIN).
To son George, son John daughters Martha Cole,
Ann Baker 5 shillings each. To granddaughter Margaret Baker L20 at 21. To
daughter Elizabeth Steele L20. To daughter Mary Hill L20. To daughter
Margaret Hunter L30, household goods. To son Peter L50 at age 21. To sons
William and James, my plantation in Newtown and remainder of personal
estate, also Executors.
Witness: Joseph Hawley, Francis Wayne, Wm Owen, Samuel Cawley.
The COLES, RENTFROES and VAN BIBBERS are said to have migrated together
around 1725 and settled near Chester County, PA. Most likely they were
Welsh. Elizabeth Cole born 1662 lived until 1732 in PA and died there in
September of that year. The best I can gather from the help of other
researchers is that Stephen Sr. and Elizabeth had Stephen Cole Jr. m. Martha
Hunter, Elizabeth Cole m. Thomas Willcox, Mark Cole, John Cole and James
Cole.
Stephen Jr. remained with his wife and mother in PA until his death in
1744. The other three--John, James and Mark--apparently left PA right after
their mother died and traveled with the Rentfroes to western VA. If my COLE
family connects with this group, and I think it does, my ancestor would be
John Cole son of Stephen Cole Sr. and Elizabeth Temple.
Elizabeth's son Stephen Cole Jr. married Martha Hunter. Children mentioned
in Stephen's 1744 will are Stephen, John, James, William, Mark, Elizabeth.
The most thoroughly researched of these children must be John Cole b.
1728 Chester Co., PA, d. 1802 Richmond Co., NC, m. Jane Bounds 1753 moved to
North Carolina. Their children were James m. Hannah Sweeney, Martha m. John
Wall, Stephen m. Nancy Terry, John Jr. m. Elizabeth Covington, Nancy m. John
Snead, William m. Martha Bounds, Mark m. Jeremiah Chambers, Jesse m. Mae
Long, Peter Hunter m. Nancy Love, Reuben m. 1st Eliza Drake 2nd Celia
Wadsworth, Samuel m. Polly Gibson.
Would be most interested in finding researchers who have information
on John Cole, son of Stephen Cole Sr. and Elizabeth Temple (?) My Francis
Cole's father was John Cole d. 1781, but could this be the same John Cole?
John son of Stephen Sr. patented land in VA in the 1740s; I've been able to
find no other information on this very elusive ancestor.
My 4xggrandparents were Wm. Buckingham Cole and Martha Cottingham....have no
date/places/etc.. Do know their son, John Cole - my 3xggrandfather, was
born around 1799 in Bedford Co., TN, m. Rutha Caroline Conner b. abt.
1805/Bedford Co., TN (parents - Edward Conner and Elizabeth Carter) John and
Rutha were married about 1820 in TN - had their first 9 children there then
moved to Illinois about 1839 and had another 3 children. John's 2nd wife
was Rebecca Jane Harris b. Feb. 15, 1826 Humphries Co., TN d/o Ancil and
Keziah Veah Harris. John was found in the 1830 Henderson Co., TN census.
Any info on any of the above mentioned will be greatly appreciated. Thank
you. Carol VanV ctv(a)gte.net
I am searching for information on Mary Cole b. October 23, 1765 daughter of
Eddy and Ruth Salisbury Cole. Does anyone know anything about her? My
Mary Cole married Rufus Edson in 1783. She was from Middleboro or
Plympton, Mass. I believed her father to be Isaiah Cole, but recently
learned that his daughter married a Joseph Marcy. She might have been
called Mary Sampson Cole.
I would appreciate any help in straightening out this ancestor as I have
checked out a lot of Coles in the Massachusetts area.
Thank you. Pat
Trish,
Red River County, Fannin County and Lamar County where I live are all
right here together. The names "Franklin" and "John" are very popular in my
line, so there could be a connection. You might e-mail me with more details
if you like. My Coles were in Lincoln County, TN, then Independence County,
AR and TX, OK.

Louise,
I tried to answer your message, but my reply bounced back. Anyway, in
case you didn't get it, here it is:
Thanks a million, but I don't think you'd find Elizabeth Temple in your
reference material. Many researchers believe Stephen Cole's wife Elizabeth
was a Temple, but it hasn't been proved. It's too far back. She died in
1732 I think, Chester County, PA. Thanks anyway!
Gene Johnson
Carol, I'm so glad to have more downline information...so you're descended
from Reuben, well I have some information on that line, not a lot. My
cousin Joan and I are researching our family, and we think we descend from
Stephen Jr.'s brother John, about whom very little has been found, I'm
afraid.
Gene
Barbara:
I found some web pages devoted to Thomas Cole. There's some family
information on them (e.g., married Maria Bartow in 1836 and moved
permanently to a house in the Catskill Mountains).
http://m2.aol.com/RoadTrails/roadtrai.html
On the web go to
http://www.google.com/
and type his name. You'll see a number of sites with further contact
information.
Hope this helps.

Does anyone have the family stats on this guy? I have found all kinds of
artist background, but nothing on his family. I think my Thomas may have
been his son.

Okay, Bev, I'm typing in my sleep here. You gave me her date of
birth--1813. That's much too early for mine. Only Mary I know of in my
line is Franklin Price's daughter, and he himself was born 1861.
I'm going to visit the new museum in Ind. County this summer. I'll be sure
to look for your Mary while I'm there.
Gene
Gee, Bev, the name Mary does show up once in this line, but I don't know if
the dates would be right. My g-grandfather Franklin Price COLE named a
daughter Mary. She married Jacob BASS, and we called them Uncle Jake and
Aunt Mary. What would be the dates for your Mary?
Gene
The earliest ancestor I can vouch for is Francis COLE b. 1760 d. 1818
Richmond County, NC. He married Elizabeth WATKINS, daughter of Keziah SNEAD
and Wm. WATKINS. Keziah SNEAD was the daughter of Israel SNEAD b. 1700
Hanover County, VA.
Francis COLE b. 1760 where?? d. 1818 NC
+ Elizabeth WATKINS
2) Martha Patsy COLE b. 1786 m. John STRICKLIN SR. in 1801
2) Rachel COLE m. Henry WATKINS
2) Francis COLE Jr. never married
2) Sally COLE m. Alexander Oliver
2) John COLE b. 1795
2) Possibly another daughter named Agatha. Francis mentions in his
will "my little granddaughter Betsey, Aggey's daughter." His wife Elizabeth
Watkins had a sister named Agatha.
Another researcher has unearthed a legal document that indicates the
will was contested. Witnesses summoned included John Jennings of
Chesterfield, Kenneth McKenzie, John Snead, Rachel Watkins, Elizabeth
Strickland, John Cole (of Frank), George Cole, William Cole (Red), Matthew
Cole, John Yates, Francis Cole, Jr., Jacob Perkins, Arus Lunsford, John
McKenzie, William P. Leak, and Lydia Watkins.
So who are all these people? Kenneth McKenzie signed the original will
(neighbor?) John was Francis' son and George his brother. Who on earth was
Arus Lunsford?
We believe Francis to be the son of John COLE whose will is dated 1781.
John does not mention his wife but names children: John (Jr.), Elizabeth,
George, Francis, Peter, Edward, David, Nancy, Rachel, Sarah.
John Cole b. 1795 (son of Francis) m. Nancy GRAVES and migrated to
Lincoln County, TN, where he died in 1844. Their children were: Joseph,
Elizabeth, Anderson, William B., Frank M., Emaline, Nancy, John William COLE
b. 1830.
John William m. Elizabeth PAINTER and moved his family from LCT to
Independence County, AR, around 1860. Their son Franklin Price COLE was
born Oct. 26, 1861 (and I remember him, barely!) He was my
great-grandfather. He and his son Hayden COLE b. 1896 later moved to TX,
and Hayden and his wife Etta Jane MELTON had Elmer Eugene COLE, my dad. So
here I am, a Texan.
