Hi,
I'm new to this list and was wondering if any of you have ever heard of a
NANCY COLE b. 1810 maybe from SC? She was my ggggrandmother married to Elijah
or Elizah Nipper. I found them in the 1850 census in Carroll County GA. I
have no COLE info on her.

In my neverending search for the parents of Lydia Cole, b. ca 1784 in MA
(per 1850 Erie Co., NY census), m. 10 July 1801, Middletown, Rutland
Co., VT, Increase Rudd, both of Middletown, I submit the following:
They had the following children (surname RUDD), Lucinda, b. ca 1801, m.
ca 1823, David Gilbert; she d. 14 Sept. 1826, Danby, VT, age 25.
Sybil, b. ca 1804, m. 15 June 1826, Clarendon, VT, Timothy Taylor of
Clarendon, VT.
Betsey, b. ca 1806, m. as second wife, Gardner Harrington.
Harley, b. ca 1807, m. Elsie/Elsa.
Harriet, b. ca 1808, m. 9 Oct. 1825, Ira, VT, Joseph Kelley; she d. 10
Oct. 1884, Collins, NY.
Julia A., b. 1 Jan. 1811, m. 4 July 1828, Danby, VT, Miner Bromley; she
d. 5 Jan. 1899, Danby, VT (my ancestors).
Polly/Mary, b. ca 1813, m. James Morrison.
Joel, b. ca 1814, m. Phebe.
Cynthia, m. 5 Apr. 1833, Danby, VT, William Morrison.
Bradley, b. ca 1819, m. Lorinda (census records).
Rosalva (History of Danby), no further record.
Moses (History of Danby), no further record.
Has anyone ever heard of a Bradley Cole prior to the 1800s? Possibly in
MA? Lydia and Increase named a son Bradley. Their daughter, Sybil, who
married Timothy Taylor, named a son Bradley C. Taylor. I happened to
think that perhaps there might be a Bradley Cole related to Lydia Cole.
Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Ed, hope this will help you. The information on Henderson COLE from
S.C. Cleveland's History and Directory of Yates Co., NY is as follows. Hope
you and yours have a Happy Turkey Day!
p. 402: chapter on Town of Italy, section on The Fox Family, "Henderson
Cole settled in 1810 on lot No. 8, north east section, remaining there till
1837, when he sold to John Hagadorn, who lived on it till 1851. . . . Mr.
Cole, who removed from the county in 1837, was one of the Justices of the
Peace by appointment, previous to the election of Justices by the people."
p. 440-41: chapter on Italy, section "Civil History": Jabez Metcalf, . . .
Henderson Cole, . . . were Justices of the Peace in Italy by appointment
previous to the election by the people. . . . p. 441: The following list of
original settlers in Italy embraces a few who have not been previously
named in this chapter: SOUTH SURVEY.-- . . . lot 1, Henderson Cole 1810 . .
. lot 8, Henderson Cole 1819;"
p. 543: chapter on Jerusalem, bio sketch on Nathan Harris: Nathan Harris &
wife Hancey Benton were natives of Conn., m. at Wethersfield, in 1819 made
their homes on the Green Tract in Yates Co. Children were John B., Henry,
Marcia, Otis, Sally, Nathan, Maria, James K., Jane & Charlotte. . . .
Nathan m. PHILA, DAU. OF HENDERSON COLE, and d. at St. Joseph, Indiana,
leaving two sons, Dwight & Charles."
BTW, since the above information does not say where Henderson Cole came
from, I thought I might venture a guess, since "Henderson" is also a
surname (70 entries for Henderson in my index). There were two families
with the surname Henderson, one was descended from a Richard Henderson born
in Ireland, which is probably not your line; the second was the family of
Reuben Henderson (p. 931) who came with his father-in-law, Mathew Royce,
and others to Yates Co. NY from Sandgate, Vermont, which is in Bennington
Co. today, just a few miles from the NY border. There were several other
families from Sandgate, as well. Just to give you an idea of the
timeframe, Reuben Henderson d. in 1816 at age 39, wife Mehetabel, sister of
Mathew Royce, & dau. of Mathew Royce, d. in 1823 age 47, so it seems that
your Henderson Cole was younger than them, perhaps b.ca. 1790. Perhaps your
Henderson Cole was a nephew of Reuben Henderson on his mother's side? Just
a thought. You might want to check into what records are available for
Sandgate, VT. Good luck.

Sorry, I don't know anything about records in Lewis Co., NY, it has taken a
lot of my spare time just to index S.C. Cleveland's History of Yates Co.
NY, about 8 years working on it off and on (1984-1992), had to read the
1168 pages of it twice. There is probably a US GenWeb site for Lewis Co.
NY; you can find out by checking their website at www.usgenweb.org They
probably have an address or two for historical/genealogical societies that
you could write to. Also my old copy of Everton's Handybook for
Genealogists, 6th ed. says that at least one county history has been
published for Lewis Co. NY, that it was formed from Chenango Co. in 1805,
so you might also want to check records in Chenango Co., too.
Have you tried sending for a pension and/or military record for Ambrose?
There're some good instructions at this URL on how to obtain military
records from the National Archives:
http://www.familytreemaker.com/00000107.html
Also I've recently seen messages on another mailing list that it is
possible to request by email copies of the NATF Form 80 form that you need
to fill in to request the records.
"If you want forms from the National Archives try this address. Send email
to:

1. put the word "form" in the *subject* line (without the quotes)
2. in the text of the message, include:
-your snail address (not e-mail)
-the number of the form from the following list:
GIL #7 (brochure for Military Service Records)
Form 80 (Military service and pension records, also
Bounty-land warrent applications, prior to WW I,

Spanish American War
Form-81 (Passenger Arrivals)
Form-82 (Copies of Census Records)
Form-83 (Eastern Cherokee Applications)
Form-180 (Military service records, WWI and later)
indicate the quantity of forms you wish to receive.
The master 'computer in the sky' will generate an answer that it has been
received. In about a week, you will get a large (9x12) envelope
with your forms inclosed. Be aware, it takes about 8 to 12 WEEKS to
receive an answer to the query. Will <willr(a)netzone.com>"

Also consider searching in one of the national telephone directories now
available on CD-ROM. These directories contain millions of telephone
numbers, seqarchable "by name". Several companies are now offering such
products - PhoneDisc USA and PhoneDisc Reverse, for example; the public can
often find these directories in public or university libraries. The service
is usually updated monthly and varies widely in quality.
A final possibility is How To Locate Anyone Who Is Or Has Been in the
Military: Armed Forces Locator Directory, Fifth Edition, by Lt Col (Ret)
Richard Johnson, MIE Publishing, $23. It explains hundreds of proven ways
to locate current and former members of all service branches, including the
National Guard and Reserve. It provides information on how anyone may
obtain copies of individual military records, rosters, muster rolls,
after-action reports and numerous other military records.

Hi Joyce, Yates Co. is one of the counties that borders the Finger Lakes of
middle New York, in fact 3 of them, it's probably the smallest county in
NY, but beautiful. I spent my vacation there a few years ago. Penn Yan is
the county seat now, and only has a population of about 5,000. Most of the
county is farming country; they raise grapes to make wine, but also other
things. Of course there's also a large tourist industry there with bed and
breakfasts along the lakeshores. There's a fairly large settlement of
Mennonites in the county, and I was surprised to see horse and buggies on
the streets of Penn Yan every once in a while, kind of gave me a feel of
what it was like for my ancestors there, of course, you do have to respect
their privacy.

Yates Co. & probably elsewhere to name their own children after their
siblings, so your line might descend from one of the other children. Also
before I was able to make a connection to Robert Cole of RI, someone told
me about a Thomas Cole who was also an early settler in RI; his line was
written up in one of the genealogy journals, perhaps New England Historic
Genealogical Society or the New York Genealogical & Biographical Register,
don't know where I put that information though.]

Dear COLE-L Listers:
Yes, I do have a copy of Cleveland's History and Directory of Yates Co.,
NY, but it will take me a while to look up all these requests. In the
alternative, there is a volunteer on the US GenWeb site for Yates Co., NY
who has also offered to do lookups in the index (probably mine, since mine
seems to be the only one, except for one that was done covering each
chapter individually). The URL for that site is
http://www.linkny.com/~history/genweb.htm The site is maintained by the
Yates County Historian, and she has put online indexes to almost every
census ever taken in Yates Co. including the state ones. Of course, the
index is lists only heads of families, and it is helpful if you know which
Town/Township your ancestor lived in as that is how the records are
arranged. I don't have any connection to the Historian's Office, just
thought you'd like to know. Good luck. I'll try to look up these requests
as I can get to them.

So PLEASE drop it.

My Phinetta/Finetta may have been the daughter of Rev. James D. Cole and
Eglentine (Tiny) Leftwich. She was born in 1810 in TN. James and Tiny
were married in 1810 in Bedford Co. VA. Any connections?
