GGBonner,
I believe there are many more on here that know more than I do regarding the Colclough lineage. I am not familiar with the Shearins unfortunately, but good luck all the same.
Regards,
Christian.

Thanks for responding to the thread Stephen. John Colclough Mercier (1813-1864) was my 4xgreat grandfather. My great grandmother on my maternal side was a Mercier (Eleanor Vyvyan), daughter of Maunsell Mercier, grand-daughter of Charles Mercier.
I am intrigued to know your lineage to John Colclough Mercier. If you would prefer my email is mcc41e(a)gmail.com

Christian McCale

Many thanks Kath for your very informative account. It is comforting to know that I am on the right tracks.
When I made the link a couple of years ago, I thought that I had got carried away with hints from other peoples research. You then get confused about what information you have confirmed and what you have added/assumed with no real sources.
The Colclough line is certainly interesting. I don't know much about the Merciers though ... any information that you have would be very much appreciated.
Regards,
Christian McCale

I'd be interested to read about the tracing of the Colcloughs to 1200.
Also, are you related to the Shearin family that intermarried with the Colcloughs?

I have just read your post and also the ones posted previously which you referred to. John Colclough Mercier (d 1864) was my 2 X Great Grandfather on my Mother's side of the family. I have got the Colclough family more or less traced back to around 1200 but the missing threads I have are the Mercier's between David who it seems died about 1716 and to the dates of birth and death of John Mercier, father of John Colclough Mercier if that makes sense. I have found the Internet quite helpful in providing information though one can't rely on accuracy there.
I would appreciate hearing from you with anything you are able to assist me with.
Thank you
Stephen Sherring

I have just come upon your post and perhaps at this stage you have the answer to your questions.
John Colclough Mercier, the portrait painter who died in Wales in 1864, was the elder son of John Colclough Mercier who himself was the eldest son of John Mercier and Mary Colclough. Her ancestor was Sir Anthony Colclough who came to Ireland in the reign of Henry VII.
John Mercier was the grandson of a french Huguenot, de Mercier, who left the Langue D'oc rgion of France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, going first to England and then settling near Goresgrove, Kilkenny.
