Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi Listmates,
I have been revising the DNA Project recently, and thought I'd give a general update.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gbonner/colcloughdna/
<http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gbonner/colcloughdna/>
We have 13 members joined to our FTDNA Project.
Of these 13, 10 have Y-chromosome data.
Of these 10, 7 have the surname Colclough or something close.
Through the first 12 FTDNA markers, there are 5 different DNA types, and two pairs of matches.
One match (type/node "C") is from a Cokeley to a Colclough. I have never been given the Colclough's claimed descent, so I can't say much about the match.
The other match (type/node "E") is from two descendants of a man recent enough that the two participants are closely related, and thus the match is of little surprise.
In arranging the claimed patriarchs into different DNA types, we find the following:

Hi Folks,
Our existing mtDNA sample, which was derived from a person who claims purely maternal descent from Rachel (1678-1745), the wife of Benjamin Colclough (~1669 - bef. 1723), has been joined by 2 other samples that are evidently derived from persons who have the same Rachel as matriarch. These three samples all match, and all come from purely maternal descendant lines of the daughters of Mary (Durham) Kelly, the wife of William Stark Kelly. There is one sample each from the line(s) of:
A. Nancy (Kelly) Williams, the wife of Paul Williams (as previously reported on this list)
B. Ester (Kelly) O'Rear, the wife of William Sterling O'Rear
C. Selena (Kelly) Hall, the wife of James Hall
Because of the perfect match and the general rarity of this mtDNA type, it can be concluded that it is not due to chance. Thus one can now conclude with great confidence that Mary (Durham) Kelly was mtDNA haplogroup "J". This proves all generations from present back to Rachel herself, except for the one from Rachel to her daughter Margaret (Colclough) Durham, wife of William Durham, and the one from Margaret (Colclough) Durham to her daughter, Mary (Durham) Kelly. And because of the extant nature of various wills, deeds, parish register records, etc., and even onomastic evidence, these two final links are in little (if any) doubt.
Furthermore, one of the matching mtDNA samples was sequenced in its entirety. The refined haplogroup designation is identified as "J1c3".
I have revised the webpage which gives more description. It is here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gbonner/mtDNA/rachel_co...
(The URL of style "< >" is the one below)
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gbonner/mtDNA/rachel_co...
The above URLs are long, and may get 'split' by emailers. So ensure you get the whole thing into your browser's address field. It should start with "http", and end with "html". If neither of these work for you, then email me privately, and I'll figure out another way to navigate you to the page.
Of course we continue to try to find purely maternal descendants to mtDNA test who descend from Rachel, but not through Margaret (Colclough) Durham, and also through Margaret (Colclough) Durham, but not through Mary (Durham) Kelly (if possible), to prove the final two links from present to Rachel herself.
And finally, we will always be trying to find mtDNA samples to match to help prove generations that are earlier than Rachel, etc.
Cheers,
Gregg
