dear carole, thanks for the informative reply! i am glad to learn how this surname is pronounced in your neck of the words and also appreciate the history you added. really, i am not certain of this family's background as they married into the family of my grandmother way back when, over 200 yrs. ago. years of research has added many branches to the family tree--now i'm getting out to some of the twigs, and info is shakey at best. if i ever get it all figured out, i'll let you know. ('good luck', huh?) :-) thanks again, deb allen

Hi
Locally, here in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, it is pronounced as 'coal cluff'. I have a memory that during a conference I attended on surnames on North Staffordshire by Professor David Hey, he said that S-O-T is the origin of the Colclough name. Clough in Old English means a small valley, and coal was mined here.
Colclough Lane joins Sandyford to Goldenhill road form Newchapel, which are all north of Tunstall and south of Kidsgrove, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs. This was a big coal mining area in 1990.
Many Colclough's still live in the area.
Were any of your ancestors immigrants from England?
Best wishes Carole
