Hi Folks,
I mentioned some time ago that the COLCLOUGH DNA Project had begun. This
project will include anyone with a surname that is plausibly the same, such
as COAKLEY, COKELEY, etc.
We now have two results:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/colcloughdna/
...both of the gentlemen are COAKLEYs. Their DNA is not a match with each
other, which is really not a surprise given that one can trace his line back
in America a few generations prior to the immigration of the other line.
This is the first step in sorting out all kinds of things, like:
1. Do some of the early American COAKLEYs descend from the COLCLOUGHs?
2. Are the Irish and English COLCLOUGHs the same family?
3. Are the Irish COAKLEYs and the Irish COLCLOUGHs the same family?
4. Do all COLCLOUGHs derive from a single progenitor?
5. etc.
The project will continue at least until they stick me in the ground, and so
likely we will gain samples that will reveal much, as has been my experience
with other DNA Projects. However, the success of the Project is entirely
dependent on YOUR participation. If you are a male COLCLOUGH (or similar
surname), then please participate. If you are not a male COLCLOUGH, but have
interest anyway, then please help us recruit male COLCLOUGHs to the project
and/or provide financial assistance to those who would otherwise not
participate, and whose sole barrier to participation is monetary.
I will keep you informed as we go. If you want to sign up (i.e., you are a
male COLCLOUGH/COAKLEY), then follow the link above, and look for the "Sign
me up...." link in the PARTICIPATION section.
Best,
Gregg Bonner

Thanks for the info Bill. I now know where you stand on the family tree!
I don't think anyone other than Frederick emmigrated, though I can't locate his mother and three brothers anywhere in the UK on the 1891 census. There are always more questions than answers.
I am sure that my Dads sister, Eve Jones, was in touch with some members of the family on your side of the pond but she has been dead for a few years now. I also think that my Grandmother, Florence - daughter of Thomas Colclough - was in touch with Arthur - brother of your grandfather.
I will need a PO number or an address if you want copies of my info. My email address is djhinton(a)btinternet.com
I have also been in touch with another cousin in Canada who was related to Frederick by his second marriage. There will soon be enough of us for a family reunion!!!!!!!
regards
Wendy

Hi Wendy
I guess this makes us 3rd cousins?
Thanks for the information, and the offer of a copy of what you have. If it is not too much trouble it would be great. One thing that seems to require some personal knowledge is emmigration. Do you know if any of Frederick's siblings emmigrated? to? etc.
As for your questions:
What was William's wife's name?
The mar.cert. has her as Lizzie Jones (Church of E.) But the death.cert. lists Elizabeth.
Did your mom have a cousin called Auralia Bessie?
I am just now getting started on her many cousins. I do not recog that name but I only knew a couple in B.C. (I grew up in Vancouver). My cousin has told me about some in England, but I am not sure of the relationship.
You would think someone had done Arnold Bennett's family tree. I did a little search and only found out the story of his illege. ggrandfather.
Regards, Bill

Hello Bill,
Glad the info was usefull. Heres some more.
Fredericks other siblings:
Mary born 1857
Emily born 1863
John Henry born 1868
William Bennett born 1872 = Minnie Oakes 1895
Enoch born 1876 = Mary redfern Chesworth 1900
Emanuel born 1879
They were all methodists and Emily Colclough nee Bennett was caretaker of the Chapel on the 1881 census.
Emanuel died feb 1881 and Emily married Arthur Dicken august 1882.
I can photo copy all my information if you want it or it is all available through the search pages of Ancestry - it just takes time.
What was Williams wifes name?
Did your mom have a cousin called Auralia Bessie?
Keep in touch
Best wishes
Wendy

Hello Wendy
Thanks for the information. I found the listing for Thomas.
Frederick was my great grandfather. I did not know any of this a week ago. Quite fascinating. My mother was his son William's daughter.
I would be interested in hearing more about these people if you don't mind, both Emanuel and Emily as well as their children.
Emanuel seems like an unusal name. My grandfather listed himself as Methodist on his Mar. Cert. Perhaps Emanual came from an early religious revival.

Hello Bill
You will find Thomas Colclough on the 1881 census on the page following Fredericks listing, with his wife Annie and daughter Florence - my grandmother.
There was always a story in my family that grgrandmother was related to the author Arnold Bennett and when I found a marriage for Emanuel he married Emily Bennett so everything fitted into place. I still haven't been able to link her to Arnold though.
I have quite a lot of information about siblings of Thomas and Frederick but you haven't said how you are related to him.
Looking forward to hearing from you again.
Regards
Wendy

Hi Wendy
Thanks for your note. Since then I was able to use the census records and made some progress.
On the 1881 census image I looked up it had Frederick/Harriet/Emily, but no Thomas, at 93 Hall street. I could not find a listing for Thomas 1881 and after?
Also I wonder if you have additional info about Emmanuel Sr, and how you happened to know that Emily was a Bennett.
Thanks for any enlightenment you can give.

My mother was a Colclough, descended from a Frederick and a Harriet. It all looks so close, except the names of the children in your list do not quite match. Can you tell me how you accessed the 1891 census? Perhpas some of them died or did not go to Canada with Frederick.
Thanks, Bill
