Hi Folks,
The COLCLOUGH / COAKELY / COKELY Surname DNA Project now exists!
This project is to include the names of COLCLOUGH, COAKLEY, COKELY, or any
reasonable spelling variation thereof.
There are any number of trees out there with the names COLCLOUGH, COAKLEY,
COKELY, etc. The DNA Project is an attempt to define which trees are the
same, and which are different, using a simple genetic test.
Since many of the COLCLOUGH descendants carried middle names spelled
"Coakley" (or similar), and because many folks surnamed COAKLEY (or similar)
cannot trace their ancestry to the COLCLOUGH family, but suspect that it may
be their ancestry, this DNA test is ideally suited to determine if the
American families of COAKLEY, COKELY, and other similar spelling variants
descend from the reasonably well-characterized family of COLCLOUGH that was
evident in the St. Paul's Parish Register from 1715 (the earliest surviving
year) onwards.
Furthermore, there will be any number of COLCLOUGH folks who know their line
ties to this family, but are unable to differentiate the specific line. This
test might be able to disambiguate their lines as well.
Finally, this test will be the first attempt to define the biological
descent relationships of the American lines of COLCLOUGH, COAKLEY, and
COKELY with the Irish lines of COLCLOUGH (Wexford) and COAKLEY, and the
English line of COLCLOUGH (Staffordshire), and others. In the end, it is
hoped that we can prove genetic relationship of the "Potteries" Colclough,
the "Woolendraper" Colclough, the "Seafaring" Colclough, etc.
If you are a male surnamed COLCLOUGH, COAKLEY, COKELY (or other spelling
variant thereof), then I encourage you to participate in this project. If
you otherwise have interest, then I hope that you will help the project by
recruiting your "targets" (bona fide descendants of your ancestor along the
all-male line), by spreading the word, and possibly by defraying the cost of
the tests for folks for whom money is the sole barrier to participation.
For my part, I am willing to pay the costs of one or two tests of males
surnamed Colclough (or variant) who can to my satisfaction prove all-male
line descent from Benjamin Colclough and Rachel (his wife) from St. Paul's
Parish, Stafford County, Virginia (contact me privately for more information
on this before DNA Kit order).
This DNA test requires no blood, so don't worry about that. The DNA sample
will be gathered by the participant themselves following the simple
instructions provided in the kit. It is really easy, as I am sure any of the
30,000+ people who have done this will tell you.
I have set up a webpage which is intended to provide more information. It is
here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gbonner/colcloughdna/
Note that the above is currently just a "sample" page, since the Project is
brand new. It will be revised to reflect the actual case as time goes by,
and as DNA results come in.
Cheers,
Gregg Bonner

Hello Pat,
Sorry to be late in replying to your message. My branch of the Booth family all came from Cheshire and Staffordshire, and I know for certain that we had no family members in N.E.England.
Frank Booth was married to Alexine Colclough, however they had no children. Frank's father was my great Grandfather Henry Booth who was born in Astbury, Cheshire.
Alexine was the daughter of Jane Colclough ( a widow). The Colclough family originated in Scotland. There was nobody named Margaret Colclough in the family. I'm sorry that I can't be of any more help than this.
Regards, Kevin Booth.

I don't if we have a connection or not. We descend from a George Henry Booth who was born about 1843 in Durham. I don't know who George's parents were. George married a Margaret Colclough in Staffordshire in 1862. Margaret was born about 1845 in Tranmere, Cheshire. I don't know who Margaret's parents were.
George was a solicter. In 1871 and 1881 they are living in Liscard, Cheshire and in 1891 and 1901 they are living in Lewisham, London. George and Margaret had the following children, Amy, Henry, Charles,Minnie, Maggie and Edith. We descend from Edith who married a Richard Williams.
Please reply if you think we might be connected. With thanks
