While trying to go back and verify the data I have for my great-grandfather John Peasley Colby, I came up with some interesting conflicts concerning his daughter, Gertrude Colby, who was born in Troy, New York in April 1870. The New York State, Marriage Index, 1881-1967 indicates she married Charles E Schramm in Troy on 19 July 1911. Also, according to the 1910 US Census, Gertrude Colby was still living at home in Troy, NY with her widowed mother, Sarah Bennett Colby, who died later that same year.
As I reviewed further records on Ancestry®, I found information on Gertrude Mae “Colby” who married Charles H. Schram. They had a daughter, Gertrude E Schram, who was born 26 Apr 1908 in Watertown, New York.
Note: Charles E has a double “m” in his last name, while Charles H only has one “m.”
I won’t bore you with all the ugly details of the online family trees referencing Gertrude Colby, but it is almost funny to see how many online family trees have details of the two “Gertrude Colbys” intermingled, but unfortunately it’s not funny at all. It seems that Gertrude M Schram’s maiden name is actually Gertrude M Cole, who married Charles H Schram of Watertown, NY.
I haven’t found any official record that Gertrude Cole’s last name was recorded as Colby or transcribed in official records incorrectly.
I’m not trying to offend anyone with my next comment, though I think I may and will probably hear about it. You see, I really hope I’m wrong and there might be some record somewhere that caused this confusion, but I actually think it might be another ugly example of the proliferation of some people not verifying data before publishing it to their family trees and posting it online.

Records on file at the State of New Hampshire Archives reflect Isaac Colby, b. abt 1758 and his wife Experience Stevens, b. 1762, were married in Hampstead, Rockingham County, New Hampshire on 7 Dec 1780. Images of these same records can be found on Ancestry’s® website as well.
The New Hampshire State Library maintains microfilm images of the town records for the Town of Hampstead, NH [New Hampshire, Rockingham, Hampstead, Town Records Vol 1, 1746 – 1840.] The entry on page 415 reflects Isaac and Experience were married on 30 Oct 1780, while on page 433 their marriage date is recorded as 7 Dec 1780.
“October 30th 1780 Isaac Colby of Londonderry and Experiance Stevens of Hampstead.”
The marriages listed on page 415 are listed chronologically, irrespective of who officiated the marriage. While the marriages recorded on page 433, appear to be transcribed from an earlier period and are listed by the minister who conducted them.
The couple listed on page 415, immediately after the entry for Isaac and Experience Colby, were married on 7 Dec 1780. This last fact seems to indicate the likelihood the marriage date recorded as 7 Dec 1780 for Isaac and Experience was a transcribing error and supports the date of their marriage was actually 30 Oct 1780.

Dear Colbys: Pursuant to my earlier request for help identifying Rox Colby in the 1913 Marquette, NE high school photo….I think I’ve figured it out! My great uncle, Ray Colby, isolated in the small photo from 1918 (?) from a family collection, is a terrific likeness to Rox. Why not think of Rox as his nickname? The dates work; the profile works; the family photo is a certainty; I bet it’s him. But have a look and see if I’m seeing a match or not.

i disagree.
one definition of Colby that i have seen is “top of the hill” from something like ‘Kolbe’
it may just be a transcription of an original scandinavian name.
Origin of the name Colby: Transferred use of the English surname, which is ofScandinavian origin and has the definition “from Colby, from Kol's settlement.” It is derived from the Old Norse elements kol (coal-black) and byr (settlement). Var: Colbey, Coleby.

page is an unusual name. i would chec kto see if there is a page family genealogy with a sally page. if there is, it should clinch it. guess i was unnerved when my mom died because i made her a year older on her death certificate…whether lack of knowledge, or poor math under stress, haha, errors are made and not only in the digital recopying interpretation of the hand-written.
