Letter (15 JUL 1877):
Letter to Otis Holden
Moose River
Sommerset Co. Maine
Arborville, July 15, 77
Dear Uncle, I sit down to day to answer your kind letter. We are all well as
this leaves us. Hoping this will find you and family enjoying the same
blessing.
I have not mutch news to write. The wish you exprest to have the record of
my
family I drawn it off from the record in my bible and is correct which you
will
find on the accompanying sheat. Now I will ask a small favor of you that is
to
look and see what condition the graves are in of my two children, and if
they
want filling or rounding up, do it and oblige a distant friend for it may be
that I shall not see them again for life is so uncertain but I intend to
visit
Maine once more. Now I will speak of the grasshoppers and the present crop.
The
hoppers destroyed the corn crop last season and laid their eggs in the
ground in
sufficient numbers to devour every vestige of green vegetation in the entire
west, but having a wet cold spring the eggs rotted in some degree and the
birds
picked up what hatched out, so they have done us no harm this summer, but we
have a prospect of a good crop. The winter rye is allready cut and in the
shock
so is the barley and wheat will be fit to cut by the 23rd of July. I have 55
acres of wheat, 21 of corn, 10 of oats. The wheat and oat as I walk through
them
reach to my shoulders and corn is above my head. Now uncle, I do not say
this to
brag, far from it, I do it to show you how things grow in Nebraska compared
with
that gravely plain that I so long tried to make a living on. But fools are
not
all dead yet, so let them work on. I want you to send me 4 lbs of the potato
oats this fall. That amount you can send by mail so I can try them hear and
I
will send you some wheat known hear as grass wheat. It can be sown as fall
or
spring wheat but sow it hear in the spring and it ripens the last of July
and is
a great yielder. Now I would ask if their can be anything realized out of
the
Mich. place or what condition it stands in in regard to the tax that has
accumulated on it. I send you a paper printed in the county. It will give
you
some idea how the west has grown. I have filled the page and must quit. Give
my
love to all. Tell Jonas I will write to him after harvest. P. M. Colby
I give the names of my children in succession as their birth occurred.

BIO: This family lived at Holden's Plantation, Moose River, Me. from at
least
1850 (Probably from 1846) untill 1865, when they moved to Casnovia,
Michigan.
In 1872 they left Michigan and moved to Arborville Township, York Co.,
Nebraska,
where they homesteaded. No death certificate for Mary Ann could be found by
the
Nebraska Historical Society, but York County's Lincoln Creek Cemetery shows
her
as dying 31 October 1872, buried with Philander. Also in that cemetery are
Matylon, Hannah and Orin.
Philander married Mrs. Mary Ann Ramsey Barber in April, 1877. The 1900
census
shows widow Mary Ann Colby, born in England, living with her only child,
Amanda
Helmstead and husband George Helmstead. An 1885 stste census shows
Philander,
Mary A. and daughter Christina Colby, 17.
Philander's homestead records show that Philander pre-empted a homestead
at
Range 4W, Township 12N, Section 24, E1/2 of the SE1/4 (Homestead application
No.
15244) in York County, Nebraska. The Pre-emption was filed July 30, 1872,
"alleging settlement the 10th of July 1872". The following improvements
were
listed, at a value of $800.00: frame house 22X25 ft, stable, grainery, well,
4
acres of forest trees, and 160 rods of hedge. The house was built in July
1872
during which time Philander states that he lived in a tent. The Homestead
proof
was witnessed by Matylon Colby and David H. Verplank. Ownership was
finalized on
September 18. 1879, upon payment of $14.00. Mary Ann died 3 months after the
house was finished.
Burial: Lincoln Creek Cemetery, York County, Nebraska.

Death (20 OCT 1914):
The Aurora Republican, Oct. 29, 1914.
The funeral services of Spencer Colby were held from the United Brethren
Church
in Marquette at 1 p.m. last Thursday and followed a short service at the
house.
The services were in charge of Rev. A. R. Caldwell. The church was crowed
with
those of the community and from other towns who assembled to pay their last
respects to one who had been a friend to all and was respected by all who
knew
him. The floral emblems which were heaped upon the casket bespoke the
feelings
of regard entertained by the donors. The funeral services were attended by
the
few remaining members of Putnam post. G. A. R. of which the deceased was a
member, who assembled at the hall and marched as an escort in a body, Mr.
Colby
had been so long identified with the history of Marquette that he had become
one
of its oldest, remaining citizens, and out of respect the business houses
closed
during the service. Rev. Caldwell commented upon the life of this good man
and
in a message founded on the gospel pointed others to the state of
preparation
which was to manifest in the manner in which Mr. Colby had lived and died.
Several selected songs were sung by the choir which were a fitting part of
the
service. the following obituary was read:
Spencer Colby was born at Emden, Maine, April 12 1835, and departed from
this
life at Marquette October 20, 1914, aged 70 years 6 months and 8 days. He
was
united in marriage to Josephine Churchill April 7, 1855, at Moose River,
Maine.
To this union were born ten children, seven of whom are living. He came to
York
County, Nebraska, in April, 1883, and later to Hamilton County, first
settling
on a farm east of town and later removing to Marquette, where he has since
made
his home. His wife died February 21, 1907, and since that time he has made
his
home with his son, W. W. Colby, where he was at the time of his death. He
was
converted in the winter of 1871 and joined the United Brethren Church, of
which
he was still a member at the date of his death, coring a period of 41 years.
He
was a devoted student of scriptures and understood the Bible better than the
average man. He enlisted in the Civil War in March, 1865, and served until
the
close of the War.
He leaves to mourn his loss four sons, Ansel Colby of Pennsylvania; W. W.
Colby
of Marquette; Asa Colby of Aurora; William Colby of Aurora; and three
daughters,
Mrs. Mary Litzenberger, of Callaway; Mrs. Alice Solt of Callaway; and Mrs.
Myra
Holderman of Stapelton. There is also a brother, James Colby residing at
Moose
River, Maine. With few exceptions the immediate relatives were present at
the
funeral, as were also a number of more distant relatives present from York,
Polk, Bradshaw, Aurora and Central City. Interment was made in the Richland
Cemetery.

WIFE NOTES: Josephine CHURCHILL
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Death (21 FEB 1907): The Hamilton County Register, March 1, 1907.
After a long and lingering illness caused chiefly by old age, the soul of
Mrs.
Spencer Colby was released from the suffering body and returned to the
Maker,
Thursday, Feb. 21st. Mrs. Colby had been very patient and trusting during
all
of her late afflictions and bore her suffering like a true follower of the
Lord.
Josephine Churchill was born in what was known as The Forks of the Kennebec
River, Somerset County, Maine, March 18, 1832, and died in the triumph of a
living faith on Feb. 21, 1907. at the home of her son, Walter Colby,
Marquette,
Nebraska. On April 7, 1855, she was married to Spencer Colby of Moose
River,
Maine. They moved to Kent County, Michigan, in 1867 and from there they
came to
York County, Nebraska, in 1883 and a little later in the same year they
located
in Hamilton County, Nebraska, where they have since resided. For almost 52
years she and her husband have trod the pathway of life together, sharing
alike
the joys and sorrows in their journey. They met with many trying and
perplexing
problems, necessitating privation and sacrifice. She bore her part nobly
and
with grace and Christian fortitude, for in early life she gave her heart to
Jesus and leaned upon him for strength. Thirty-five years of her life she
has
been a member of the United Brethren Church and in her quit unassuming way
did
what she believed to be the will of her Heavenly Father. She was the mother
of
ten children of whom eight are left, who with the father, four brothers,
four
sisters and a number of grandchildren and hosts of friends are left to mourn
her
departure. But we mourn not as those who have no hope; for through Jesus
Chris
we hope to meet again in that land where the saved never die. The funeral
was
held from the U. B. Church Saturday forenoon where Rev. L. O. Sanderson
delivered the last rites, and the remains were laid away in the Richland
Cemetery. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved.

Subject: [COLBY] Moose River Colbys going West
Greetings cousins:
I would like to know more about the Colby families of Moose River, Maine and
how, why, and when they went West.
I know of my great great grandfather Spencer Colby who left Moose River
after the Civil War, settled in Grand Rapids, then pushed on to Marquette,
Nebraska where he is buried. My grandmother June Colby was born there.
Walter Welsh Colby, my great grandfather, was born in Moose River. Spencer’s
brother Philander (and perhaps Helon?) joined them in Nebraska eventually. I’d
like to know about the journey, any letters extant, family lore or other
diaries and documents that might be in your possession.
Photo attached: Walter Colby, his wife Minnie Cudney, daughters Josephine

Thank you.

Subject: Your recent Simeon Colby post on RootsWeb
Dear Ronald,
I am completing work on a book manuscript dealing with deaths on the
Oregon/California/Mormon Trails, 1841-65 and encountered your recent
RootsWeb post for Simeon Colby
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=colbyfamily&id=...
On October 11, 1852, the Sacramento Daily Union published "Deceased Emigrant
List" by John H. Hays on page 1. Hays had traveled to California overland
and recorded all the 1852 graves he saw along the trail. One of the burials
was for "S. Colby, died May 25, age 53." Based on the year, initial "S."
and family name and age it seems likely that this is "your" Simeon.
Based on internal evidence in the list it appears that he died on the south
side of the Platte River between Ft. Kearny and 20 miles west of Plum Creek,
Nebraska. The attached map shows the area where Simeon likely died (between
the two arrowheads). Note that Ft. Kearny is different than present-day
Kearney, Nebraska.
An anonymous list published in the St. Louis Intelligencer of July 13, 1852
records trail deaths east of Ft. Laramie. (Ft. Laramie is on the south side
of the Platte about 30 miles west of the Nebraska/Wyoming line.) In the
list is "S. Colby, age 53, died May 25 of cholera." It also indicates that
the grave had a headboard on it. This wooden marker would have only lasted
a very few years and disappeared probably before 1860. This second article,
though less specific as to location, does not disagree with the first and it
also gives a cause of death. Cholera killed about 650 individuals on the
trail in 1852.
I thought you might be interested.

Todd -
How exciting to read your email this morning!
Philander was my great great grandfather! My husband and I have some errands we need to run this morning, but I will get back to you when we get home. I have been out to Nebraska, where my father grew up, and visited Philander's grave site.
I live in Detroit, MI. Where are you? Can't wait to share information.

Ron, is this yours? Did we already know that your Spencer was my Philander's little brother?
Double check his first son, Summer--might be Sumner.
Thanks for this.

ps I don't know if I have shared these letters. I xeroxed them while visiting Moose River:
Two letters from Spencer and Josephine in Michigan to relatives in Moose River were preserved by the Holden family:
+-+-+
Tyrone, Kent Co. Mich
March 28 1869
Dear Brother,
Your letter of the 16 ult. was not received untill the 20 inst. We were glad to hear from you and the general good health of your family.
We are sorry to learn there are so many sick and regret to learn that Mr. Henderson has lost his wife. We also learn by Wilie Doyl that Mr. Wilson has lost his wife. You say that you have an idea of buying more land at Moose River, but my advice is for you to come west before doing so. It will not cost you more than $100 to come out west and look around for a month or so and I think you would conclude not to buy at M. River. I am rather poor but you could not get me to go back there. I do not say that Mich is the best place in the world, but you can go into any of the new western states. The snow is all gone here now and the farmers will begin to plough in a few days. Last year there was ploughing done before this time. This part of the state is a great lumbering district. The logs is all cut short and drawn on wagon sleds. I worked in the lumberwoods last winter. I am making maple sugar this spring. We live 4-1/2 miles from Philanders. His family is all well and he is making sugar. I have two acres of winter wheat sown and intend to plant four or five acres of corn and a few potatoes. This is a good country for wheat corn and grass and stock raising and a great place to raise fruit such as apples, peaches, pears, plums, and some cherries and most anything you may want to raise. If you should want to come here and buy wild land you could clear off the land, buy apple trees and have apples of your raising in three or four years. When I hear from you again I will write more particulars. Affectionately yours, Spencer Colby
+-+
Tyrone Mich May 27, 1869
Dear Brother and Sister,
Your letters of the sixteenth is duly received. We was glad to here from you and your family. Sorry to hear that your health is so poor. We are all quite well at present. My health is better than it was when I was there. The children are going to school now. Laura studies geography and grammer and arithmetic. Sumner has been staying at home to help his father for the past two weeks. The children go to meeting and sabath school every Sunday. They think everything of the sabath school. I tell you it looks better to see the neighbours going to church on the sabath day that to the grog shop and is a great deal more respectable. There is a Lodge of good Templer, meets every Saturday night in our school house. Spencer and I have joined them, they are something like the sons of Temperance. Have good times when we go. I wish you was here to join them with us. Willie has joined them since he came. Willie is to work for a Mr. Johnson for twenty dolars per month. Has hired out for six months. It is two miles and a half from here. He comes here every week. I think if Helon could sell his property there and had enough to buy an improved farm here he would like it out here. We are satisfied on a piece of new land. Here the snow has been all gone for three months and the fields are all green. Wheat is eighteen inches high and bids fare for a good crop. We have two achres of wheat. Spencer is going to plant about two achers of corn and one of potatoes. He will finish planting this week. The apple trees and peaches are in blossom and all other kind of fruit we have got twelve apple trees set out and some peach trees and cherries. One of the apple trees had blossoms this spring but then it is not all sunshine here no more than there. We must expect difficulties every where in this wicked world.
Philanders folks are all well. They was here a short time since. Philander is complaining most of the time of being sick. Is talking of selling here and going to Iowa but I don't think he will. Tell Clara to write when she gets ready. Give my love to all inquiring friends. Melintus lives four miles from here, the same distance that Phi does. They are all well. Mrs. Pressey has moved away from here since I wrote to you, about seven miles from here. Thom and Martha are to work out. Ellen is living to John Kellihers. She took the two youngest with her.
Write again all about Uncle Melintus and all the news you can think of. Josephine Colby.

(Names for Spencer’s wife Josephine Churchill), and June…in Nebraska circa
1918.
Thank you.

yes, ron.bravo.
that is the name of the ship captain frined which was changed after the ship captain was deceased. edwin much easier as a moniker for a kin;)
another vague memory is that of a hannah colby, 1018 given a warning somewhere in nh.
warning being…can’t live in the town because they are poor and the town didn’t want to take care of them.
could warner be the city… or just have the”warn” in warner in my head.

ron,
this is but a vague memory as i am cleaning out the inbox on my computer:
there were two bothers , one edwin. the father was associated with salmon
fishing (nova scotia). his son was named a really odd name after a fishing
captain.
the name was a long, unusual and onerous one. he later changed his name to
edwin from…s.... you might be able to find the legal change in court
records…
this is but a hint.
