William F Colby was b. 12 June 1818 in Whitefield, Maine, d in 1896, buried
Oct 6, 1896. He was a sailor, then went into the lumber business in Maine
until 1840, worked in New Orleans, then in the lead mines at Galena,
Illinois, came to St Croix Falls [WI] in about 1844 and removed to Taylors
Falls [MN] in 1846.
He built the first frame barn in Taylors Falls and was a charter member of
the M E Church, organized on 27-Mar-1859 in that city. He served in Co C,
7th Minn Inf Regt, during the Civil War. He was listed as 44 when he joined
on 15-Aug-1862. He was promoted to sergeant and was discharged 16-Aug-1865.
According to the Veterans' Census of 1890, he suffered from chronic diarrhea
at the time of his discharge.
William H C Folsom, in his book "Fifty Years in the North West" had this to
say about William Colby: "He is a bluff, square, outspoken man, hearty in
his manner, and somewhat sailor-like in his expressions, though almost a
lifetime has passed since he trod the deck of a vessel."

find-a-grave page. So who is his parents?
The family is listed in the 1860 census for Taylors Falls, Chisago County,
Minnesota
Along with William F Colby and Selina and their 4 children; William, 10;
Paulina, 5; Ida, 4 and Mary, 4/12 also living with them is a James W Colby,
36; Seymour, 22; Henry, 20.
Not sure who James W Colby is but Seymour and Henry Colby are the sons of
Nathaniel Colby and Charolett Longfellow.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
