I certainly agree with Dick's premise. In fact, after I read his article (at about 1:00 AM), I posted a response (something I seldom do).

Alice,
I'm to reply more later today, but just saw this this morning. I have found a Fowler Berry candidate and census records indicate he is a strong possibility.

Can anyone help??
The probate record for Moses H Colby of 1878 of Saratoga, New York has a
name on it that needs to be identified. It is* FINLER H BERRY *The name
is included with others who are nieces and nephews of the deceased.
"Finler" is probably the son of one of Moses' sisters or step-sisters - but
which one??? What is his father's name? Mr Berry?? I want more than
that!!
"Finler" is probably "Philander" - which is a name that occurs in that
family.

Did you get that from the Vermont death record for Clarissa Colby who married a guy named Dennison Boyce? Her parents are shown as John Colby and Zelma Whitcomb. <??> You said John B Colby is son of John Colby and Hannah Perlman I don't have a Hannah Perlman!! I do have a Hannah Perham
I have a John Bradley Colby, son of Philbrick Colby & Susannah Bradley, born 21 October 1773 in Newbury. He married first Annis Kelsey and they had 9 kids, including Clarissa who married Dennison Boyce and John T born in 1819.
Annis died in 1828 and he married Mary Barnett in January 1832 and they had 6 kids.
Wonderful has a brother named John Barnard Colby. He was born 24 March 1794. Their parents are John Colby son of John Colby & Rachel Barnard and Hannah Perham. I think this John Barnard Colby is with the John Brooks family on the 1850 census. I think Mary Brooks is his daughter and his wife is dead so he is living with them, with his son Harvey - 12 years old.
I have NO IDEA who this Zelma Whitcomb might be!!!!

In the 1850 census a John Colby b. 1828 is living with Wonderful Colby.
This would leave me to believe that John B Colby that married Mary Barnet
and Wonderful Colby are siblings.
Any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

As to your question, Ida May Harrison was the birth daughter of Francis
Downing and Mary Colby, who married at Blenheim, Kent Co., Ontario, May 25,
1873. She was adopted by John and Experience (Colby) Harrison. I have no
idea why. I have found no later records for Mary (Colby) Reeder, and assume
that she died, leading her sister to adopt Ida May. The adoption is
mentioned in the Commemorative Biographical Record of Kent County, Ontario,
p. 168.
Searching court house records often turns up information that is found

I was wondering if anyone can help me find some birth/death/marriage/burial records. I'm in the process of application DAR through John Sackett and we have a local chapter named for him. This is the info I'm missing:
Birth: Viola Colby dau of Harriett Sackett and Merrill Colby
Birth: John D. Franklin hus of Viola Colby
Death: John D Franklin hus of Viola Colby
Birth: Harriett Sackett dau of Ezekiel and Elizabeth Sackett
Marr: Harriett Sackett and Merrill Colby (both were born in NY and both lived in Wayne County, Michigan - so at this point we aren't positive where they were married - however, since parents of both lived in Michigan at the time, we are, at this time, assuming Michigan)
Birth: Merrill Colby (son of Merrill Colby and Esther)
Thanks in advance for your help. Even if you can point me in the direction of looking further for them, I'd appreciate it.
Thank you

Westland, Michigan
Did I mis-type and say Francis when I meant Franklin?? I should get a new
keyboard - this one makes too many errors.

The "...original Everett Hughes Colby development." is actually E. Hughes
developing a much older Colby homestead. The two trails mentioned were the
site of an orchard at the top of N.Lorraine in what locals call "Colby
Canyon" as it was cleared by a Colby family in 1900.
The old Colby Ranch house was a two story, 5-2, Victorian somewhere on
present day Bennett Ave. The retail "turkey farm" was listed at 20765 East
Gladstone, Covina. Latest persons of interest are F.D. Colby Sr. & Jr.
I believe Jr was born Frederich in Los Angeles in 1906, mother was
Elizabeth. He died September 1986, Glendora. The Senior was Frederick
Daniel Colby born 1873 in Masssachusetts. Grandfather, also Frederick
(Kolbe?) Colby, born in Germany 1844. All three resided in the Los Angeles
area at one time or another.

the first wife died or if there was a divorce. First wife was Jennie Alice
Parker born in Michigan. They were married 2 Oct,. 1881 in Barry, Michigan
and had a daughter, Florence Agnes 20 April 1886 who married a German guy -
Arthur Von Parpart (or something like that) 8 Mar 1900 in California. I
would expect that her mother had died and she came west with her father.
Albert Francis had married Lulu before the 2 of them show up on the 1900
census, living in Downey, Los Angeles California. They show up again in
1910 living in Westminster. I don't see them after that. I don't see
anything on the daughter again, either.

I only know bare bones on Albert. He married twice; but I don't know if
